like i just have no fucking patience for the way that as soon as we start talking about how JK Rowling is directly funding the oppression of trans people someone in the notes (who is almost certainly not transfem) comes back to respond with "well actually the books are bad too!" LIKE WE KNOW THEY'RE BAD. a lot of us did read them as kids and have realized how bad they are in retrospect. it shouldn't matter how good or bad the books themselves are. Rowling could have written the best book series on earth and i wouldn't have cared because she's still fucking funding a genocide against trans people. like sorry; our lives matter just a little bit more than what you'd rate her books on goodreads.

This isn't necessarily literal. It can apply to characters who aren't children too. But there's something about characters who are either certain of the fact, or terrified of the possibility, that they are just fundamentally wrong and bad at their core

It is also important to me that it is not true. No one is fundamentally broken and evil.

teenagers aren’t the vanguards of the pro-censorship movement. the closest thing that happens to this is that bad actors who are adults exploit teenagers’ age-appropriate discomfort with violent and sexual art to incite internet stochastic terrorism campaigns. but even this happens far less often than adults just silencing children and pretending to be speaking for them by proxy.

i hate the misuse of the term “puritanism” in this context but the idea of teens (“puriteens”) being the principle driving demographic behind this cultural trend is genuinely pretty fucking insulting, considering adults who use kids and teens as a cudgel (“think of the children!”) are actually the people driving movements toward censorship.
