RYAN GOSLING as RYLAND GRACE Project Hail Mary (2026) dir. Phil Lord, Chris Miller
absolutely boggles my mind how so many social media sites do NOT want you scrolling without an account. can't even click on an instagram profile while not being logged in without it blocking you. even if you put it in the url, it only lets you scroll like twice before it prompts you to log in. fucking youtube won't let me watch videos on my phone anymore because i use firefox focus and don't want to log in every time i wanna watch a video so it's instead flagged me as a bot. i also think social media sites are drastically overestimating how badly i "need" to use their sites. if you won't let me browse someone's profile or watch a damn video on the Browsing Profiles and Watching Videos social media sites then i will simply leave. the power of chucking your phone into the metaphorical ocean. i hope i hurt their metrics every time i close out of a tab <3
I absolutely blame Facebook for this shift. Words cannot describe how freaking WEIRD it was in the mid-00s when there was suddenly this popular website where you were required to use your real, brickspace name and encouraged to post photos of yourself. Every single bit of Standard Internet Safety prior to then said that you should never ever ever do either of those.
I think the thing is, it was the ONLY place you were expected to do that, and it was for locating lost people and talking to your parents.
We didn't think people would abandon the real Internet!
How did bringing more people in destroy making your own sites and forums?!
You didn't used to have to use your real name on Facebook, though. Like... you very much COULD just use an alias at first. I did. I was extremely upset when they forced "real names"
And it wasn't "normies" forcing the change, it was Facebook itself - because they wanted to build that network of people and data mine people and sell that data, like. This feels VERY ahistorical.
Plenty of "normies" were helping it along, in the sense of "reporting others for not using real names"? But it was very much a change forced by Facebook itself.
And if it comes to that? I DO remember peer pressure to sigh up for and start using a "[email protected]" email in the last 2000s, and that DID come from friends and family ("your email is so childish! It's time to join the adult email world!"), but. Even that felt like it was sort of...normalized by Google and then enforced by a few people? Like, saying "i don't want my real name associated with the random shit I do online, that feels unsafe" was still a normal, expected reaction then. Some people would push, but a lot of people would just be like " ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ fair enough"
