EVIL DEAD II | 1987 dir. Sam Raimi
I think paying attention to bugs is a legit gateway to animism because these are creatures that we are taught have no real ability to think or feel beyond the most basic instincts. They don't have personalities or thoughts or emotions, they're just bugs. They don't feel fear or pain, they're just bugs.
But even just watching a bug navigate a landscape and react to the things around it shows just how complex they really are, how much thought and decision making is going on in the minds of creatures we're told are mindless. If you make a habit of it, you'll notice differences in personalities too, how a lot of bugs are bold and curious and others are very shy and timid, some are very friendly and others go straight to threat displays.
I make a habit of visiting the resident spiders on my house all throughout the spring and summer until they die in the fall and many of them will start to recognize me, will stop threatening me when I stop by their webs. The wasps that set up their nests on my house will observe me from a distance and then will come out to greet me and hover around me when they learn that I'm a source of water.
And once you recognize that these "mindless" animals are intelligent and deliberate individuals, it's very hard not to start seeing the rest of the world the same way, to not question what we're taught about other animals like fish and about plants. And that doesn't necessarily have to lead to animism but I do think it's a huge foundation to it.

Concept: It’s mid-October, Halloween is just around the corner and there’s a street festival in town. The cold breeze is laced with the scent of cinnamon and caramel with a hint of coffee. The ground is dusted with hay and bright leaves get caught in piles as they dance across the town hundreds at a time. You’re snuggled up in your sweater, scarf, boots, hat, and gloves as you stroll through looking at every vendor you pass. To keep warm you buy a cup of cider and sip lightly until it cools a bit more. There’s Jack-o-lanterns on every surface and scarecrows out in the fields. It’s sunny in the morning, but as they day goes on a storm rolls in and a grey overcast settles over the town. It’s perfect.
the best trope in media is: “characters turn on the lights, see the monster, and immediately turn the lights back off”
