each game has similar characteristics. the main gist is for the "good team" to eliminate the "bad team" before the "bad team" kills off the majority of the "good team." at the start of the game (when actually playing the party game version), everyone is given a role. you can't show your role to anyone, nor can you know anyone else's role. your role is either in the good team, the bad team, or (sometimes) somewhere in the middle/neutral.

in each game, there are "days" and "nights." each night, a player anonymously uses an action--whether that is killing, investigating, etc. or absolutely nothing... it depends on your role. each day consists of a voting round. if you're in the good team, you are trying to figure out who is on the bad team, and eliminate them all. if you are on the bad team, you must pretend that you are on the good team to avoid getting eliminated, OR press the blame on someone in the good team to get them voted off.

below, i have written the roles that are MOST COMMONLY SEEN in the game. there can be WAY more roles than this, it just depends on how many people are playing and what version you're playing.

in the game of MAFIA, there are just a couple of roles:

NARRATOR (game host/supervisor): you assign roles, narrate the game, and keep everyone anonymous from each other, slowly revealing the story as each night and day goes on.

MAFIA (bad team): each night, ya kill someone.

SHERIFF (good team): each night, you get to chose whoever you think the mafia is, and shoot them. you won't know if you chose the right option till day comes.

BODYGUARD (good team): each night, you get to chose whoever you want to protect from being killed/harmed. you won't know if you chose someone who had an action done upon them, nor their role, till day comes.

SEER (good team): each night, you get to chose whoever you want to "see" their role. the narrator can ONLY tell you if the person you chose is the mafia or not.

CITIZEN (good team): you... do nothing. you have no role, really. no actions. haha. lame. (just kidding)

WITCH (neutral): you have ONE poison, and ONE regenerative potion. each night, you can chose to use one of these or not. once used, you can't use this again. the poison kills whomever you choose, and the regenerative potion revives someone.

DOCTOR (good team): each night, you get to chose whoever you want to protect from an action being done on them. you won't know if you chose someone who had an action done upon them, nor their role, till day comes.
