I think the (incorrect) way a lot of the Progressive™️ internet has come to interpret the word 'delusion' is why people are so surprised when interacting with someone who has actual delusions. When I was at my worst, I was literally given medication to make me sleep, because being conscious when experiencing such horrifying delusions felt like literal torture and I planned to end my life because I felt everyone conspired against me. Delusions can drive you away from friends, family, and anyone who ever cared about you. You can't "reality check" delusions and questioning them often ropes you into the delusion as a distrustful person. Delusions have nothing to do with reality shifting, relating to fictional characters, or whatever BS people are saying now. And yes, delusions are not always terrifying, but I wanted to address the worst parts because that's where you really need to support people.

Since someone asked how to help someone with these experiences: 'Fact-check' and encourage discussion within the delusion to make the situation less frightening. For example, "tell me how you figured this out" to gain insight on the delusion and "I think it might not be that easy for X to happen because of Y" when you know what is feared. Some people see this as "encouraging the delusion" but simply saying a delusion isn't real won't help, and as I said, may make the person distrust you more. Also, do what may help the person feel more safe in the moment, such as rolling down shades or taking away objects they believe are harmful (all depends on the delusion of course).
