#Repost @bobbystuckeyms with @get_repost γ»γ»γ» In the midst of the massive intake of political news we've gotten over the past few weeks, the from USTR (US Trade Representative) published a proposal a few weeks ago of a 100% tariff on the majority of alcohol imports from all 28 EU nations in response to the WTO Airbus ruling and Franceβs digital service tax on US companies. β£ β£ Many people think this will affect just European winemakers, but hear me when I say this: European winemakers will find another market to export to, while thousands of American taxpayer jobs will be lost. The importing industry is not made up of just winemakers and importers. It includes logistics, accounting, admin, trucking, marketing, retail, packaging and beyond. The tariffs are not just a hit to wine lover - it is downright punitive to the American working class. β£ β£ If you're a leader, you look at trends of the past to inform and affect your future decisions. Being a leader is not being a politician, it's being a leader. Period. β£ β£ The 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of Hoover's administration was a protectionist American strategy that only inflamed the Great Depression. These new potential tariffs will cripple our current wine importing industry. Let's learn from the past. β£ β£ This is not an attack on either side. This is a plea for people to understand that it's beyond wine and cheese. It's about losing jobs we think protecting on the surface level. It's a huge blow to our industry, but it's not final yet. The USTR is currently accepting public comments on both proposals. I will be submitting comments for each of the proposals, and I hope that you will join me. You can find a great summary from @sevenfiftydaily in my link to bio with how you (you don't have to be in the industry) can submit a public comment.
