Batman makes the choice of not killing the Joker.

So does every police officer who doesn't shoot him inside the car after he is arrested, including Gordon.

The legal system let's Joker live because it is decided that he needs help instead of the electric chair.

And the doctors and guards at Arkham could off him when he is at his most vulnerable.

Looked at some of the old comics I have bought from flee markets and such, and interesting thing about superhero comics translated to Danish is that Batman and Superman kept their original English names while other heroes got new names.

Like Wonder Woman became Mirakel Kvinden(Miracle Woman) and Spider-Man became Edderkoppen (that means The Spider). And X-Men got the name Project X which I think it pretty.

Oddest is Green Arrow who for some time, while comics were still black and white, was called Røde Pil which means Red Arrow. He was called that because of his political views. But after comics git colours, he became Green again.

Hmm... You know how Batman just beats the shit out of criminals with his bare hands and uses grappling hooks to get around town?

Think about it.

He has money enough to build high tech battlesuits with rockets on its back to fly him around. But those costs a fortune, not just to build but also when it comes to fuel and repairs Heck, he moves around Gotham in the Batmobile instead of just using the Batplane. He could end every bank robbery, assault and supervillain shit easier than snapping his fingers by going full Iron Man every night.

Reading old Superman comics and noticed something important about the evolution of the character. In the older comics, Superman is Clark Kent while in newer stories it's Clark who is Superman.

Let me explain.

Back in the Golden age and Silver Age of comics, Clark Kent was mainly a way for Superman to have aspects of a normal life, but he also made sure to seem extra meek so that no one would suspect who he truly is. But he also enjoys being Superman in his free time and has a high tech fortress with Kryptonian tech and such, not just to help him be Superman but also to entertain himself. And Lois eventually married Superman, they got married in a traditional Kryptonian fashion. Sups was sincerely sad that he didn’t live on Krypton.

I forgot how much these two covers bothered me.

Allow me to explain.

If you don’t know the comic series “Invincible” then I can tell you it is a rather violent superhero comic that broke a couple of boundaries and pushed the limit of what was acceptable and to be expected from a superhero comic(besides all the blood). It was not a perfect series, but it was a good series.

The hero of the series Mark AKA Invincible, had to go to space-war and was gone from Earth for almost a year. When he returns, he sees that his girlfriend Eve have gained weight since she stopped exercising out of depression.

First of all, I like that Eve actually looks like a person who is overweight and not like a joke of a cartoonish fat person. Also, Mark is just so darn happy to see Eve again after ten months in space and told her she had nothing to be ashamed of. Heck, he even tells her that he finds her attractive and is sincere.

Eve is not treated as a joke and she is not worth less for being overweight.

... Those two covers I showed you? Eve is drawn as a thin person. Most likely because that makes her look “sexier.”

That makes the message of women not being worth less for not looking like photo models sorta... hollow.

I think Rick Jones is one of those characters who has been all over the place.

He was the Hulk’s sidekick, he practically gave birth to the Avengers, he has been Bucky, Captain Marvel, A-Bomb and the Whisperer. He has been all over the Marvel Universe, so no wonder his wedding got SUPER crowded since he has connections to 90% of the heroes of the Marvel U.

Is he a good character?

... Yes, I like to think so.

Just like Spider-Man, he is a person who is driven by responsibility. If it hadn’t been for Rick, Hulk would not have been born. So it is the guilt that makes a dumb teenager grow with the role as the Green Goliath’s best and for a while ONLY friend who both tried to keep him safe from everyone as well as keeping everyone safe from him.

Oh, there are a few.

Red Tornado, a heroin who is anything but thin but still kicks ass and defends her neighborhood. Not a big-time hero, just a lady who makes sure her kids would grow up in a safe environment.

The original Mr. Terrific, a man who had achived everything he could have hoped for before turning 30 and therefor decided to commit suicide since the rest of his life seemed pointless. But after preventing a woman from jumping off the same bridge he was about to leap from, he decided to share his talents with the rest of the world and fight for fair play as a superhero.

The Sandman, wealthy inventor who has prophetic nightmares about evil deeds that are about to happen. He tries to prevent by arming himself with a gasgun that puts criminals to sleep.

The Phantom is a family of crimefighters. During the sixteenth century, Christopher Walker was the only survivor after a gang of pirates attacked the ship he was on. Chris swore to dedicate his life to fight piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice of any kinds as the Phantom and made the jungle of Bangalla his home. His son took over the identity as the Phantom, and so did all of Chris’ decedents. Eventually, the Phantom became known as the Ghost Who Walks since many started to believe the Phantom was an immortal creature who protected the jungle, something the Walker family used to their advantage to spread fear in the hearth of criminals. It was the third Phantom who made people believe he was his grandfather and immortal since he had trained as an actor under William Shakespeare.

Speedy II

Mia Dearden was an underage prostitute who was saved from a life on the streets by Green Arrow who made her his ward. She wanted to become a superhero as well, but her new legal guardian forbade her to follow in his footstep. After Mia had been tested positive for HIV, she became even more determined to become a superhero in order to do something special with her life, and Green Arrow finally gave in. She decided to become the new Speedy since she wanted to be a survivor like GA’s first sidekick.

Wasp

Not many remember this, but Jan Van Dyne started out as Ant-Man's teen sidekick. That's right, Jan was still a teenager when she became the Wasp.

Rage

After getting exposed to chemical waste, teenager Elvin Haliday transformed into an adult with superstrength. He became the superhero known as Rage and even joined the Avengers, then the New Warriors. After his grandmother was murdered, Elvin was adopted by the hero Night Thrasher and became his sidekick.

S.T.R.I.P.E.

Pat Dungan is a rare case; a teen hero's adult sidekick. He was first known as Stripesy when he worked together with Sylvester Pemberton AKA the Star-Spangled Kid. Later, he build a armor suit and became known as S.T.R.I.P.E. (Special Tactics Robotic Integrated Power Enhancer) in order to assist his stepdaughter Courtney Whitmore who became the second Star-Spangled Kid.

The "Umbrella Academy is a comic book series so out there that it makes series like Morrison's "Animal Man" and "Doom Patrol" seem boring. It is the story about six people with superpowers who were the adopted children of a scientist who trained them to become the superhero team known as the Umbrella Academy. The scientist was a cruel father, and twisted the kids for the sake of "the greater good" without any remorse. Five years after the team disbanded, the adopted siblings (who BTW does not like each other that much) must gather to attend the funeral of the father all of them despised. And then all hell breaks loose.

Here are five moments from the first Umbrella Academy story called “Apocalypse Suite” that removes any doubts in our minds that not only is Gerard Way a genius, he is also bonkers for thinking it up to begin with.

The Boy, simply because he exists. Seriously, he is a sixty year old man who is trapped in his ten-year-old body(that no longer ages) after using his time-travel powers to go backward in time. Also, he can use his time-travel powers to gain super-speed and he is a vicious killer.

The Umbrella Academy team’s adopted mother is revealed to be a plastic mannequin with organs.

Lex Luthor is evil. Simple as that. But he is also REALLY messed up! Then again, what can you expect from a guy who tries to kill the world’s greatest hero and STILL believes he is the good guy?

Here are some of the most messed up things he has ever done:

Number 5: He dated Supergirl.

Long story short: Luthor made himself young by transferring his mind into a cloned body of himself as a young man and pretended to be his long lost son, Lex Luthor Jr. And he uses his dashing looks to sway Supergirl, turning her against Superman. And, and this really takes the cake: He talked her into NOT saving Superman when Doomsday was pummeling him to death.

Asshole…

Number 4: He gave people superpowers and then killed them all.

After Luthor fools most of the world into thinking that anything bad he had ever done was done by his doppelganger from another universe, the he makes everyone loves him by giving people powers so that they can become superheroes.

And then, just to discredit Supernova(a hero who temporarily became Metropolis defender due to Superman’s absence), Luthor triggers a mass-shutdown of the powers he gave people, resulting in many, MANY deaths!

Number 3: He made a robot clone of Lois Lane.

No, really. This isn’t from the Silver-Age or a Elseworld thing, he really did that. He used technology from Brainiac and a DNA sample from Lois Lane to make the perfect companion. She would challenge him intellectually, be his robot bodyguard, served as his conscience AND he would also have sex with her.

DUDE!

Number 2: He made someone lose faith in Superman.

To prove a point, Lex attacked a bank by driving a tank into it AND blew up a dam at the same time. Sups manage to arrest Lex AND save people from getting killed by the flood from the dam. BUT… he didn’t have time to save a guy from getting run over by a train.

That’s right, Lex Luthor’d plan was to make a situation where Superman would be unable to save EVERYONE. Simply to prove a point.

And to make it worse, the brother of the guy who died ended up hating Superman, losing his faith in him.

Number 1: He didn’t save the universe, just so he could kill Superman.

Lex actually became a god once. He fused with the living embodiment of the Phantom Zone, and gained power over the space-time continuum as a whole. And with his powers, he created universal bliss. Pain, death, unhappiness, all of it gone.

But, one problem: With his close to omnipotence, he couldn’t do anything negative, like… you know… KILLING SUPERMAN!

So he gave it up. He decided that killing Superman was more important than saving the entire universe.
