Captain Janeway assumes her first command, when Admiral Sulu arrives on the bridge to give her new orders. Instead of the planned exploration of the planet Jones-47, they need to track down a group of pirates called the Corsairs.
The Corsairs have been hitting shipping lanes hard. They are lead by their charismatic leader Chakotay Torres. A ruthless man who stops at nothing to get what he wants.
However its suspected that the real power behind the Corsairs is his wife B'Elanna Torres - a tactical genius who plans their entire strategy and has made them such a threat that Starfleet has to intervene.
To locate these pirates, Starfleet recruits a convict - a smuggler pilot experienced with all the hiding spots of the region.
Tom Paris Mudd
Tom will do anything to commute his sentence - he wants to track down his father Harcourt Fenton Mudd who left him behind to take the fall.
Amongst Janeway's crew is Science Officer Lt Kim, who loathes Tom Paris-Mudd. Naturally he's been assigned to keep watch on the smuggler and spend time with him.
Medical Officer Kes Zimmerman - a young newly qualified starship surgeon, who often parties a bit too hard and is extremely flirtatious with Janeway
Civilian archaeologist / anthropologist Dr Chaotica, who was onboard for the planned expedition of planet Jones-47 and its civilisation of proto-celluloids. It was only meant to be a short term assignment.
Whilst pursuing the Corsairs, a blinding white light engulfs both ships. Its an artificial rift in the space time continuum and they are dragged in.
Both ships suffer heavy damage and losses. From what they can tell they are on the other side of the galaxy - trapped decades from home.
The two crews form an uneasy truce.
The source of the rift is the planet of the Okampa. Their elected leader the "Caretaker" has been using their vast technology to kidnap ships from all over the galaxy for terrible purpose.
The Okampa's technology has made them barren, and need hosts for their embryos to continue their people - compatible male crewmen are taken from Voyager.
Dr Kes Zimmerman is able to find a cure for their condition to prevent more ships being kidnapped. However the Okampa are unable to return Voyager and the Corsairs to Federation space - the rift technology only works in one direction.
With the pirate ship's engines damaged beyond repair, and Voyager lacking sufficient crew to operate, they must travel the long journey back together.
On their journey they encounter an individual who escaped from a cybernetic collective. Designation 16 of 47, or as he was once known "Neelix"
