These are false color images, this is not what the moon actually looks like to human eyes. The grey images you've seen taken from right on the surface were not lying to you, nor are enhanced images of the moon new (there are way more vibrant ones assembled from hundreds of thousands of filtered and tuned images). I really like these pictures too, but they are not just photos. The moon has always been beautiful, we can't start creating unrealistic beauty standards through editing for celestial bodies too.
