Because like this is how it actually works for me at least:

Some of the things in the green circle would literally disgust me in the other tiers

Some of it is even stuff that other people would find very normal and pedestrian

Sexual partners calling each other "babe" > outside of written fiction is an immediate boner killer for me but in a piece of writing can be hot

Like c'mon

Some things are only fun in your head when there are no actual bodily fluids or clean up or effort needed

Probably an aspiring wizard that hunts fairies

I don't know that it does. I wish I had a more comforting answer, but anything else would be a lie. There are genuinely parts of queer history that I avoid learning about because I know how much anger and grief it will awaken within me.

My editor has taken me aside before and told me that I have been writing too many articles with sad endings and I need to remind myself of the beauty in queer history. In that act of care, I think there is an answer for you. It isn't about stopping -- it's about balancing it.

I have these waves of hurt that hit me when I think of certain stories, and I believe a part of my role in the queer community is feeling those feelings fully. Wanting revenge, mourning, even hating, for the people who didn't have a chance to defend themselves, for the people who were so sure that they were wrong that they never even considered protecting themselves.
