In my Cinderella boy designs, chase has both his lobes pierced, deacon has a helix piercing on one ear, buddy has a spider bite piercing, and wave a snake bite. All of these are relevant to what they tell us about each character in some way. (Part 2)
Buddy has spider bite piercing, which when we see him go into books, we assume is something he’d have in real life too as it’s the one thing not altered when he has different outfits. I’d imagine he’d tell chase he likes the look of the piercing and it’s the one thing he says that violet doesn’t change.
To chase he learns through the spider bite that buddy himself is not just a rival, or even a bad guy, but a guy like him in many ways. A guy who has likes, dislikes, who wanted a cool piercing and who dresses in ways he likes. It kind of humanizes him in a way, especially when he tells at one point chase a silly dream of his is to have more facial jewelry.
This is until “dreams by night” where in chases dream he sees buddy, with his multiple facial piercings he always wanted, while in buddy’s dream, he has none. This kind of “misleads” the audience intentionally even more into thinking he’s currently trapped by ex libris through visual design by implying by the lack of piercing that maybe the piercing he has in book is fake, and he even lied to chase about getting one in the first place.
Buddy is a morally mysterious character by this point so we as the audience are even more distrustful since he lied and made up getting a piercing, maybe even lying about wanting to have more.
Of course it’s not till the end of s1 where we learn that buddy has been a key, and thus lied about the piercing because in a way, he DID truly have it, and want it. If he ever does become human it’s a small and simple but humanizing trait of his that he really wants a bunch of facial piercings.
However, now it’s been set up to the audience as well that not only can the appearance of clothing be altered, but so can the existence of piercings, leading us to
wave is a handsome surfer college graduate with a chill demeanor and an even cooler snake bite piercing, which he kinda brags about to deacon that he just got. He’s nice and trustworthy seemingly.
When he starts getting clothing changes, his snake bite jewelry is changed along with it, which isn’t anything too outlandish to the audience, though since it’s now revealed that rose has been sending messages to our main characters through outfits, these multiple piercing changes everyday seem.. off. Especially since buddy wasn’t changing his jewelry fairly often. & especially off since he just got the piercing, and usually the healing process takes awhile..
Until it’s revealed that he has much more sinister intentions, though still unknown, to the audience.
Everything is called into question about him and who he is, whether he’s a loyal worker of ex libris who’s already betrayed them, perhaps a relative to the old man, or perhaps the question of whether his story of his girlfriend, his family, his education, his life was even real..
..and perhaps the question of if his snake bite was even real, or if perhaps he’s been a lying snake this whole time, and a snake bite was another message from rose.
