non-verbal whumpee scrambling back, back, back until they are firmly touching the mouldy wall, their chained hands clamped tight over their mouthâ because they may have been shocked out of words, but the scream in their throat feels insistentâ and this is a new person. that is never good. there is so much hit-and-trial as they try to figure out the rules, in order to avoid punishment.
they take slow, seemingly heavy steps towards whumpee's corner, their hands outstretched to display the lack of any implements. whumpee shudders and shrinks into a tighter ball. that has never protected them, before.
there are words, but they can't really make them out over the roaring fear. they are grabbed and pulled to their feet. the chains are unlocked. whumpee stares at them, feeling untethered. they want them back.
then they are being led away. what is this? the question loops around their head, over and over, as they are bundled up and put into an ambulance. they are asked questions but their words are no longer theirs. the anxiety has them awake and alert even as their body droops with exhaustion.
but when no blows for stumbling come, when any contact is minimal and when they aren't forced to give up informationâ eventually, sleep sneaks up on them.

This is what writing the different pov's felt like in the earlier chapters (i just never got around to drawing tsđ§ââď¸)
Anywayssss i'm writing chapter 10 and i have a terrible feeling it's gonna be a long one. But i also don't wanna split it into two parts cuz i took so much time outlining all the chapters and it would throw off my entire plan..đ so yeah we might end up with a very long chapter 10. Which might be good, considering it's a very important one. I love chapter 10. It's so buzzy.
Here's some out of context spoilers that don't spoil anything because i'm boring and i need interaction and i'm happy to be writing Mike's POV.
A narrative parallel I love: Whumpee seeing themselves in other objects/animals/etc that Caretaker interacts with.
-Caretaker gently carrying a spider or other creepy crawly out into the garden instead of squashing it gives the Whumpee who was always considered expendable a lump in their throat.
-Caretaker having a âscaryâ dog breed like a Pitt bull or Rottweiler but treating it like a pet and lapdog, loving on it instead of training it to attack. Living Weapon Whumpee watches hopefully from their spot standing guard as the dog lays its head in Caretakers lap.
-Caretaker fixing their old beater of a car instead of getting a new one, even though they could afford it, and the Whumpee who was replaced after get hurt/making a mistake/getting too old/etc feels a sense of overwhelming relief.
-Caretaker feeding and watching over a feral stray cat from a distance, never trying to trap it or get too close, just making sure itâs okay. Stoic/defiant Whumpee not letting themselves think about how that makes them feel. Also, if/when Caretaker has to catch and treat the stray because itâs gotten injured or sick, realizing that thatâs what Caretaker had been doing for them. They just were too scared to understand.
-Caretaker oiling and polishing their tools, putting them away carefully, taking pains that they were well taken care of and would last forever. Mentioning offhandedly that if you take care of your tools, theyâll take care of you. Slave Whumpee nodding emphatically, hoping that mindset extends to them as well.
-Caretaker tending their garden, trimming buds from flowering plants to keep the plant healthy instead just pretty, and Whumpee whoâs only ever been valued for their appearance feels less shame and guilt for âletting themselves goâ in recovery.

months after the end of pepper & felix, the two wake up to find that they have swapped sizes.
word count: 2.5k words
Felix awoke with a start.
Layers of tangled blankets restricted his movement. He writhed, overcome with the uncomfortable heat of too many layers, to free his arms enough to untangle the rest of his body.
Ugh. He huffed, finally yanking an arm free and attempting to sit upâ since when had his bed become so uncomfortable?â only to tumble awkwardly forward. It was only then did his annoyance shift to confusion, anxiety.Â
Where was he?
This certainly was not his bed, nor his apartment. This room was incredibly dark; Felix found himself squinting to make out the faint shapes around him. Large, pointy shapes emitted a dim lightâ were those fairy lights?â enough for him to determine that he was not in a bed at all, but a thin hammock.
He blinked, allowing his gaze to adjust to the faint lighting from the abnormally large fairy lights strung around the room. It was impressive that the hammock could support his weight at all, considering the massive pile of pillows and blankets accompanying him inside. His lanky limbs protruded awkwardly into the fabric as he squirmed into a proper seated position, mind racing. He was certain that he had never been here before in his life.
No, no. This felt familiar.
Somehow.
Felix furrowed his brow, swallowing thickly. He had been drunk a handful of times before, but he had never blacked out enough to have such severe memory loss. Was he drunk right now? Dreaming, even?Â
His attention slowly returned to the fairy lights. He swallowed, thickly, and rubbed one eye.
They were very, very large fairy lights.
âââ
Pepperâs knees were weak.
Panic bubbled up into his throat, escaping in trembling coughs as he caught himself against the edge of the sink, one hand on the cool counter, one hand resting over his lower neck.Â
Breathe. Oh my god, breathe.
He had never seen his reflection so clearly. Dark, tangled hair, falling across his forehead and poking his eyes. Tan skin, significantly more flushed than usual. Calloused, worn hands. The mirror surpassed him by only a few inches⌠a dreadful, sickening realization that nearly brought Pepper to his knees again.Â
âPepper?â
He flinched, whipping his head towards the bathroom door, but no one approached. His left hand remained firm against the sink, as he was fairly certain he would collapse if he let it go.
âPepper? Where are you? Are you okay?â
Felix. Oh god, Felix.Â
Pepper had woken up in Felixâs bed. That wasnât particularly unusual, of course; Pepper was more alarmed by the fact that he was human-sized when he woke up in Felixâs bed.Â
He hadnât spent ten minutes climbing down the edge of the comforter in order to reach the floorâ he had simply set his feet down on the carpet. Like Felix would have.
Did that mean
âPepper? Pepper, can you hear me?â
It took tremendous effort for Pepper to clasp his hands over his chest, furrowing his brow with focus.Â
âFelixââ
âOh, oh my god, Pepper, I thinkââ
âWhere are you? Iââ
âI just woke up, and, andââ
âI thinkâ Iâm human-sized.â
âIâm in your room.â
The chaos of telepathic words came to a halt, and Pepper heaved a breath, fingers clutched against his shirt. Rocks filled his stomach.
âMy room,â Pepper repeated. Since when had he fallen to his knees? He rested his forehead against the lower bathroom cabinet, fingers squeezing into his chest. âYouâ youâre in my room.â
Felix was awfully quiet for a moment.Â
âFelix? Are youâ are you okay?â
âYouâre human-sized?â
Pepper chewed his lip, struggling to make sense of the situation. He was in Felixâs apartment, notably Felix-sized, while his boyfriend was somewhere in the walls. The size of Pepperâs finger.
âFelix, youâ are you okay?â
âI donât know what to do.â Felixâs voice was timid, shaky. âI canâtâ I donât know how to find you.â
Pepper blinked rapidly, lifting his head away from the cabinet, fingers trembling. âDo youâ itâs only a short walk from my room to the kitchen, I can tell you where to goââ
âI can barely see.â
Oh.Â
Of course.
Felix didnât have the acute borrower eyesight that Pepper had developed for twenty-two years. Of course he couldnât see in the darkness.Â
ââ
âJust keep going. You shouldâ you should almost be there.â
Felixâs legs trembled as he walked, one hand dragging against the dusty wall. Terror clutched at his chest, restricting his breathing. He couldnât see a thing.
âAnd thenâ ahâ next turn, turn right.â
It only took a few moments for the wall to vanish, and Felixâs hand dropped away. He halted, squinting uselessly in the darkness, and managed to turn right into the next endless corridor.
A thin sliver of light approached. Felix drew in a shaky breath, hands clasping involuntarily against his chest. âI see it!â
âOhâ okay, okay, good, justâŚâ
Felix stumbled towards the light, which revealed itself to be a narrow crack in the wall, stretching a few feet (inches?) above Felixâs head. He reached towards it.
âFelixâ Felix, wait.â
Pepperâs voice brought Felixâs legs to a halt. Felix trembled, eyes locked on the exit. âWhat?â
Pepper remained quiet for a moment, and Felixâs stomach writhed.Â
âYouâ you know Iâm human-sized, right?â
Felix fought away a snarky response (âyouâve said that about a dozen times, Pepperâ), fueled by his desperation to escape the walls. He swallowed thickly. âI know, Pepper.â
âItâs justââ Pepper seemed terrified. âYouâre not going to want to see me.â
âYes, IâŚâÂ
Felix paused, a cold feeling settling in his chest.Â
Pepper was outside, waiting for him, and Felix was currently the size of his pinky. The realization hadnât fully set in until this very moment, and it was uncomfortably chilling.
ââŚOh.â
ââ
Pepper had lived in the walls of Felixâs apartment for well over a year.
The day Pepper had entered and studied Felix for the first time, hidden in the shadows behind the base of a bookshelf, he had understood one thing: Felix was, without a doubt, the tallest human he had ever seen.
Felix had never held the same intimidation factor that other humans didâ he wasnât loud, or gruff, or explosive. No, there was a gentleness to the way he moved and spoke, and Pepper was lucky enough to experience that gentleness firsthand, as he befriended him months ago. Felix, in all honesty, was harmless.
Pepper just couldnât get over the fact that Felix was the tallest human he had ever seen.
His towering form had terrified Pepper, most particularly in those first few instances months ago when Felix had first touched him, held him, in large hands that held so much power. His gentle demeanor couldnât contain the sheer magnitude of his size, his shoulders, his presence. Pepper was always acutely aware of the power dynamic between them, even once they became boyfriends. Felixâs size overwhelmed him in every sense of the word.
It was therefore incredibly jarring to watch Felix stumble out into the kitchen floor, the size of a mouse.
Pepperâs hands twitched from where they rested on his knees. He had knelt on the kitchen floor while telepathically guiding Felix towards the exit, both because he wanted to be closer to the ground as Felix emerged, but also because seeing the kitchen counter at his waist level had made him immensely nauseous.
âFelix,â he whispered.
His boyfriend had frozen, the details on his face barely distinguishable. Pepper wasnât used to thisâ Felixâs expressions were usually so easy to read, so large.
Pepper felt sick to his stomach, watching as Felixâs thin legs trembled, small face involuntarily shaking a no.Â
Pepper knew that feeling.
The feeling of meeting a giantâs eyes for the first time, knowing that their hand alone could overwhelm you.Â
âItâ itâs okay,â Pepper forced out, hesitantly, his stomach twisting with every one of Felixâs flinches. âItâs scary, I know, just⌠I⌠Iâm gonna stay right here. Okay?â
It was the unpredictability that terrified borrowers the mostâ Pepper understood that all too well. He desperately wanted Felix to trust that Pepper wouldnât grab him, and he certainly wouldnât hurt him. In fact, the thought of his abnormally massive hands touching Felix made Pepper want to vomit.
Pepper swallowed, focusing all his attention on Felixâs small frame. Felixâs expression was shifting into something more stable, small fists clenching and unclenching. âPepper.â His voice was faint.Â
The tightness around Pepperâs chest loosened. He suppressed a sharp exhale, knowing that the sound alone could make Felix startle. âAre youââ Pepper halted, taking a moment to soften his voice. âFelix, are you okay?â
ââ
Oh my god.
Felix could barely process Pepperâs words. He knew that his boyfriend was saying something to him; Pepperâs lips were moving, his voice hurried and soft, but Felix couldnât pay attention.
The world was upside-down, twisted, terrifying. Felixâs knees shook, struggling to support his wobbling frame.Â
âFelix, Iâm not gonna touch youâ Iâm gonna stay right here, okay?â
Felix twitched, the numbness in his limbs slowly fading into a dull thrum of energy. His shoulders jerked back, and he lifted his chin, struggling to meet Pepperâs eyes so far above his.
âPepper,â he repeated, voice thick and strained. He couldnât bring himself to form many more words. He feared he would run out of oxygen and collapse.
He simply couldnât push away the pure, primal fear, writhing deep in his stomach and screaming at him to run. Pepperâs broad shoulders enveloped Felixâs gazeâ is this how he feels when he looks at me?â while enormous hands fiddled nervously with his thick denim pants, a terrifyingly short distance away. Pepperâs knees alone surpassed Felix in height. Felix felt dizzy.Â
Through the cacophony of meaningless noise in Felixâs mind, he managed to pinpoint one clear thought: at least Pepper isnât standing up.
Because, god, Felix wouldnât be able to handle that.
âFelix? Are you okay?â
The familiarity of Pepperâs voice allowed Felixâs shoulders to loosen, some of his wayward tension slipping away. Felix let out a breath, fists clenching and unclenching.Â
Itâs just Pepper.
âIâŚâ Felix drew his bottom lip between his teeth, chewing for a moment. âI⌠Iâm okay.â
Pepperâs posture was stiff, as if he had retreated into himself. His hands remained settled over his knees, fingers absentmindedly twitching. Felix felt grateful that Pepper hadnât moved a muscle.Â
So this is how Pepper feels. Felix twitched. This is what I look like to him.
âYouâre really brave,â Felix finally forced out, faintly.Â
Pepperâs eyebrows lifted in surprise, concern tracing every detail of his face. His voice was nervous, hesitant. âWhat?â
Felix allowed a nervous laugh to escape himself, dragging a shaking hand through his blonde hair. âYouâ I donât know how you do this everyday. Iâ wow, Pepper. This sucks.â
Pepper twitched back. He paused, seemingly frozen in terror, before finally offering a breath of nervous laughter. The familiarity of his boyfriendâs voice allowed Felix to relax further.
âWellâ Iâ um.â Pepper seemed bewildered, amused. His gray eyes flickered anxiously over Felixâs form. âYou get used to it, I guess.â
âI donât know how you do it,â Felix admitted, voice heavy.Â
They fell into tense silence. Felix swallowed, dragging a hand over his neck and chest, ensuring he was still breathing properly. He surveyed Pepperâs towering formâ the trembling of his enormous hands, the stiffness of his large shoulders.
âPepper, are⌠you okay?â
Guilt wormed into Felixâs chest, watching as Pepperâs lips parted, drawing in a shaky breath. Felix had never seen all of those little details of his face before, at least not this clearly.Â
He should have noticed the anxiety lining Pepperâs expression, or the shrunken, rigid way he was holding himself right now.Â
Felix wasnât the only one who was terrified.
âIâŚâ Pepper blinked rapidly, chewing his bottom lip. âI donât know. I justâ I donât know what to do. What happened?â
Felix swallowed. âI donât know. Iâ I just woke up and I was in your bedâ your hammock.â
Pepper nodded slowly, fingertips drumming. The movement made Felix twitch. âDo you remember anything?â
âNoâ not really. I just went to bed last night like normal.â
âMe too.â
âSoâ why did this happen?â Felix lifted a hand to his chest, anxiety thrumming deep underneath. âWhat is going on?â
âI⌠I donât know.â Pepper let out a heavy sigh. Felix involuntarily flinched back as Pepperâs arms lifted, an alarmingly quick movement from such large forces. Pepper closed his eyes, dark brow furrowed, and pressed the heels of his palms into his forehead. âI donât understand what happened. Is this a soulmate thing?â
Felix found himself frozen. He hadnât been prepared for Pepperâs massive form to unfold so rapidly in front of him. For a moment he had braced himself to be snatched up in a giant handâ a thought that sent an icy chill down his spine. âIâŚâ he swallowed hard. âI have no idea. Iâve never heard of anything like this before.â
Pepper raked his hands back through his dark hair, then allowed them to drop into his lap. His gaze was distant, focused blankly on the kitchen wall beside him. He appeared to have almost forgotten Felix was there at all. âDo you think this has happened to anyone else?â
Pepperâs gray gaze returned to Felix, fixated, desperate. Felix, struggling to maintain eye contact, focused instead on his own small hands. âMaybe⌠I can call Alice, maybe, andâŚâÂ
He trailed off. His phone must still be on his nightstand.
âYou might have to⌠um, go get my phone,â Felix admitted, shifting on his feet.Â
âOh.â Pepper twitched back, his expression changing. âRight. Is it in your bedroom?â
âYeah.â
âOh.âÂ
In a weak attempt to prepare the inevitable, Pepper drummed his fingers over his knee again, gray gaze scanning Felix. âI, uh, Iâll go get it then.â
Felixâs shoulders had tensed up, bracing for impact, although Pepper hadnât moved. His gray eyes were soft, sad, understanding. The rocks in Felixâs stomach weighed a ton.Â
Pepper seemed anxious, but finally made the executive decision to rip the band-aid off. Murmuring a comforting âsorry,â he moved to stand up.
Felix couldnât have been prepared. Pepperâs large hand sank against the floor, each long finger no doubt surpassing Felix in length. His unfathomable weight shifted deep underneath his torso, and Felix watched, fixated, as Pepperâs massive leg bent and rose, followed immediately by the other.
His presence had already been so large, so overwhelming, but to stand up was to overpower Felix completely. Felix flinched back, body numb, as Pepper reached his full height.
He could barely make out the details of his face; the kitchen lights blurred his features, surrounding his dark hair like a halo. Pepperâs first move was to step back, and while Felix was grateful for the distance, he still startled at the massive movement from the legs towering over him.
âAre you okay?â Pepper asked warily. His voice was distant.
Unable to bring himself to speak, Felix nodded. His back bumped against the base of the kitchen counter.Â
Pepper appeared just as sickened as Felix. He parted his lips again to speak, but seemed to think better of it, turning rapidly to exit the kitchen. Within seconds, his overpowering presence was gone.
Felix let out a heavy exhale, melting back against the wall. Icy rocks tumbled down from his chest to his stomach, a heavy weight bearing down on his tiny frame. His eyes squeezed shut.
