One of my biggest dislikes in au fanfic is when Silna is just there as a cameo character - or when she's happily married to Goodsir (and worse, when she's taken his last name!) with no real explanation of how she got there or what she's doing in England (usually it's England). This is not to say I don't want her there! But to have her cameo as just "part of the gang" often feels so disingenuous. In canon, she is fundamentally an outsider, she is not there by choice, and her entire relationship with the individual men and with English/Western society is defined by her status as an indigenous woman of color and the trauma that brought her there. I'm not saying every fic she shows up in needs to discuss her Trauma or dive into the colonial politics of it all, far from it, but throwing her in as a "fun" namecheck feels very different than it does with the rest of the characters. I love it when she shows up in a well thought out way, I also love to see her get to flourish in other circumstances. I just want the author to have answer to why Silna specifically is in this story. Nothing throws me like having her just randomly be in England with no reference to what she's doing there, her background, etc. It's not the same as having Pilkington be the bus driver: one is a character with a very specific and marginalized history and character, one is a background white man known in the fandom as "if you know this guy you're never getting out".
