Most of my knowledge on Bollywood movies starts and ends with the guy who sold me weed in college.

No he was not Indian. But he somehow knew hindi. I have no idea how and like a good customer I never asked.

But like I remember distinctively that every time we smoked weed together we used to watch some movie to let the high be more creative.

Every once in a while he used to put on this Hindi comedy movie. It was like a funny watch especially when high on weed and we watched it multiple times.

Now we reconnected a while ago and he has no weed and no memory of that movie.

So let me give you my version of Durmstrang!

When the Witch trials had ended and the muggle world was slowly evolving would be the time when Wizards started mingling with the muggles making the Wizarding world more aware of Muggleborn wizards and later having halfbloods. Most institutions such as Hogwarts now started accepting halfbloods and Muggleborn students. Now the pureblood elites who wanted to maintain purity had to come up with a solution, hence they created Durmstrang.

Durmstrang was not always a school. It was only meant for the children who were too soft, too curious, those who started to mingle with halfbloods and muggleborns. These children were snatched away from regular schools like Hogwarts and Beauxbaton, possibly from outside Europe too and placed in Durmstrang.

It was not an educational institution, Durmstrang was called a disciplinary. it was built to discipline, to correct, to purge, to break and remake the children of the wealthy pureblood houses into heirs their families could actually use. In its original form, Durmstrang was a political machine disguised as an institution. An isolated fortress where the sons of aristocratic lineages were sent when they were too disobedient too inquisitive about the world beyond the aristocracy. Heirs who survived the process came out refined into weapons, cold, efficient, ruthlessly loyal. Those who didn’t? They simply never returned. And that is the reputation, the one whispered in old families and scrubbed from public records, leaving behind a faint memory of focus on dark arts.

I think after a while it just became normal for some of the elite houses to send all their children to Durmstrang, this eliminates even the risk of putting them near halfbloods and Muggleborns.

This is the real reason Durmstrang became infamous long before Grindelwald ever stepped foot through its doors. What changed wasn’t the ideology, what changed was the marketing. After Grindelwald’s fall in the mid-1900s, Durmstrang definitely needed to publicly distance itself from the idea of militant supremacy while still preserving the power structures it was built to protect, so instead of reforming, it rebranded: no longer a disciplinary crucible, now it was a collaborative union of elite pureblood houses, a boarding academy exclusively for the children of the Northern aristocracy. Not discriminatory, just exclusive by tradition, conveniently shielding itself from the expectation of admitting muggleborns by claiming that every family involved funds and staffs, governs the institution together, a closed circle, a sealed ecosystem of privilege.

And that’s why the castle is small. That’s why the student body stays tiny. Durmstrang never needed to house a thousand students; it needed to contain a curated handful of heirs, trained far from the influence of the inclusive post-Grindelwald ideology spreading through the wizarding world, protected from dangerous ideas of equality the way rare relics are protected from corrosion. They possibly began allowing half-bloods too, but only on the condition that the father was from a wealthy pureblood line, because bloodlines, titles, and inheritance flow downward through patriarchal legitimacy, not maternal heritage.

This is what people miss when they reduce Durmstrang to the dark school: the darkness isn’t aesthetic, it’s systemic, a fortress designed to sort children into heirs or losses. A political alliance maintained through controlled education, a place where the pureblood families didn’t just send their sons to learn spells but to be moulded into future tyrants, future diplomats, future pillars of their line. Durmstrang isn’t a school gone dark; it’s a disciplinary institution that learned how to look like a school.

I like to assume that all staff and Highmasters of Durmstrang are it's own graduates, this maintains the secrecy, people who are the old Durmstrang graduates are always ruthless wizards, those with scars and too dark of a presence.But I think some of them stepped up at making Durmstrang more hospitable, it's still exclusive but it is trying to be a boarding school in the new generation.

And I have this problem with almost every house, Slughorn is not an ambitions ,he values ambition, but he himself is probably the least ambitions Slytherin. Same with Draco, like, oh yes, he's cunning and sparky, but not exceptional. Slytherins are supposed to be ambitions cunning people who have a goal in life and will do anything to achieve it. That is the essence of Slytherin. But most of the characters we are given as Slytherins lack these major qualities.

Slughorn is too lazy and callous to be a Slytherin. Draco is snappy, but once he grows up, we can see his cunning turn into basic smartassness.

Severus Snape was a Slytherin. Ambitions, responsible, cunning, genius even. He always set goals for himself , and he was ready to do whatever it took to succeed. He was a very mentally strong person.

Narcissa Malfoy/Black was a fantastic Slytherin. She was so loyal to her family and blood that it developed into ambitions. Ambition to protect her loved ones to have the cunning to make your biggest weaknesses your strength that is Slytherin behavior.

Regulas Black was a scarcely mentioned but still a quite interesting Slytherin. He was ambitious to prove himself, a much better son, as Sirius mentions. Regulas was cunning and immediately climbed high enough to get the death eaters mark. He was the one to discover Voldemort's secret. Without anyone's help, that is how brilliant a Slytherin is supposed to be.

Cho chang ? Like first of all racist ass name. But wtf was with her and others bullying Luna. Ravenclaws are meant to be creative , critical thinking problem solvers, and one of the main characters is just a bad take on the mean girls. Luna is quite odd to be fair, but she's still a creative and problem solving soul.

Griffindors are almost all insufferable, in my opinion, and we have no idea what exactly qualifies a Griffindor. Bravery ? Honestly, it's just bad impulse control. Righteousness ? Maybe , almost every Griffindor is kind of a self-righteous person, some in a classist bigot way ( Yes, I'm talking about James Fucking Potter) , some in a more self assured and fair way . ( Harry Potter, no do not compare him to James, I'll punch you ) Hermione is much more of a good person, that tries to be brave, standing on her morals. Ron is brave. I'll give you that one only, Ron is a very good and brave character in the books. Ginny is a good deal brave, but then JKR ruined her character by making Ginny say she did it all to get Harry's male validation. ( Honestly, JRK should write another book, " How to ruin perfectly good characters, but not writing them correctly" )

Haufflepuff is a less represented one, so I'll basically sit out on this. Just my chill dudes , dorm next to the kitchen. ( they tickle the grapes to enter, like who the fuck thought that was a good idea ?? )

Cedric was basically a nice chill dude, helped Harry, was kind to Viktor krum, probably just a nice person to hang around with. Loved his girlfriend the most. Honestly, Cedric was a wonderful person. But can't define a whole group of people using him.

In the end, I like to think that the sorting hat really just thinks about which attributes the person values. But then again, Sirius was ambitions about proving his family wrong , so he should've been in Slytherin. But honestly, my best guess is that the sorting hat just goes, " Which house do you wanna be in ? Griffindor, cause you're bold with bad impulse control, and your new bestie is in Griffindor. There you go, GRIFFINDOR !

Your mind had been brought to be value purist ideologies, and they will probably kill you if you don't end up in Slytherin? Who am I to protest, SLYTHERIN!

And the fact that infuriates me is how fucking accurate that is.

The order is meant to depict soldiers in war , and that sad truth is that most of them always die in vain. There are soilders in the army , those who spend hundreds of days training believing they can be the one to protect their nation and bring a change. But war doesn't give that opportunity. There are those who are killed by the first line of bullets, those who die due to terrorist attacks in the camps themselves.

James stans : But Snape turned into a death eater, which is terrorist organization, while James joined the order with the good soldiers.

James anti : This does not answer my question. Being a soldier does not justify his actions.

James stans: We ignore his actions and paint him as a loving desi india man who is a complete sunshine.

James Anti : That does not make him any better. Coming from an ethnicity wouldn't make him a good person.

My point is that adult characters in the series are meant to showcase an entirely different perspective on the mc's life. They either turn to the mc's side in the end or stay on the farther end but still help him out.

Controversial and morally grey MOST PROBABLY

Interesting and probably the most complex in the entire series DEFINITELY

I LOVE characters that make me want to write in the file and ask, " So, shall we schedule your appointments for the next weekend ? "

Realistic psychological depictions are so lacking in media that I love it when it does happen correctly.

PEOPLE DO NOT GROW OUT OF TRAUMA

There is nothing called growing out of trauma. If you think maturing his healing, then do you really think you have matured up ? Because you're heavily mistaken, buddy.

People don't just heal on their own they just learn to hide better. This is one of the least discussed effects of trauma. The victim is no longer craving justice, but deep inside, there's the ink clawing at him, and it erupts in the most unexpected forms. This can be self-harm , lashing out on random people, and even extreme obsession with anything that can sterilize their trauma.

Neglected people can crave affection and can turn self-deprecating.

Abused can become abusers because they want to be in the power .

Sirius says ( in the HP OOP ) that he left because he had had enough of his family. And I think saying that he was some poor kid who was disowned takes away from his story. He's not a brave Griffindor because he joined the order. It's because he fought against his parents and ran away.

This is what gives Sirius Black his individually, his pride, and it's also what makes it a cruel fate to Regulas. It's not Regulas watching his elder brother thrown out of the house. It's about Regulas watching Sirius abandon him in the purist ( Maybe abusive ? The book only says they were purists ) household .

Sirius CHOSE to run away to the Potters.

I would also like to mention the fact that Andromeda did not take him in . Which likely suggests that she had either completely cut her family off or she probably did not care enough ( Sadly, the second one is more probable since Andromeda was in touch with the order and knew about what was happening regarding Bellatrix and Narcissa , she would have known that Sirius ran away from home. )

Andromeda and Sirius are very similar and opposite people. They both ran away from the house of black , they were blood traitors, and can be seen as selfish as well. Andromeda ran away for love because she fell in love with a muggle. Sirius ran away out of hatred , he hated his family.

In the books, there are about a dozen students Karkaroff selected to participate in the Triwizard ( as mentioned by Crouch in the dark forest). In the movies, they bump it to 24 students that too ALL boys.

Which is, first of all, very misogynistic that Dumstrang is a rough and tough all boys school that specializes in dark arts.

But can you imagine the movie Canon Chaos ? There are 24 teenage boys in a ship under the supervision of a headmaster who is all over Snape trying to win him back or whatever and a scrawny teachers aid who's like half their size.

How come they didn't burn the ship down 😂

NO HATE to Alan Rickman RIP he was a fantastic actor, BUT! There is something so striking when reading the book and imagining a thin, lean , short, and probably younger than his age , looking youngest professor at Hogwarts who is very mean and gives of trans vibes is something that a tall ,brooding ,calm and collective masculine figure can't potray

I know I've mentioned this before, but I don't think people fully understand the unhinged complexity of this character.

Snape is depicted as a person of a low rank, always trying to climb his way up the social status for a better life. ( I'm referring to the earliest description of the child Snape, not the first book. ) Snape has been a person of low authority since the beginning, born in a poor abusive family as well as raised in the industrial area. In the wizarding world, he is half blood in the house of mostly purebloods and purists. Snape has always been an odd one out trying to fit in to get a better life until he finally gives up.

The marauders Fandom ≠ The Harry Potter Fandom

The marauders Fandom should stop shitting on canon characters from The Harry Potter books because of their own headcanons. The marauders Fandom is ( mostly ) based on Atyd, which is a FANFICTION. It's not canon, and it's dumb to give the atyd background to the canon characters because it's doesn't fit in with anyone's canon description of them.

James Potter was Draco Malfoy of the marauders era , he was rich , he was perverted , he treated people lower than him like shit and yes he treated Lily like shit too. And no, the only people who said James matured up were the two most biased best friends of James Potter telling an orphan child about his father. The only difference between Draco and James is that the Potters were fighting alongside Dumbledore and raised a spoiled bastard brat . The Malfoy were fighting alongside Voldemort and raised a spoiled bastard brat.

Sirius black was canonically not a purist only because he hated his parents. He was raised in an abusive household where he was always jealous of his younger brother. There is no proof that Regulas ever did anything against him, and the only thing he ever stated was that Regulas was considered a much better son.

Sirius Black is repulsive and always took his anger out on random people hexing and torturing them.

No, there is no canon mention of a death eaters Slytherin gang that the marauders used to fight against only Sirius' very much biased words. The people Sirius does refer to are Lucius, Avery , Mulciber, and Snape mainly . Lucius is 5 years older than Snape and even though the age group of Avery and the rest are not mentioned, it is only canon that Lily mentions them as Slytherins, there is no canon gang possible given their age groups and even if there was, Snape has got to be the young boy they were grooming.

There is no mention of Snape ever attacking the marauders until after James molested him, and that is also a biased opinion about Snape fighting back to James and Sirius.

He may have been a very loyal friend to James, but literally, everyone, including Remus, was ready to believe he betrayed the Potters. Do you see the kind of reputation he had for everyone ?

I'm gonna take Snape as an example first because I believe he has the most noticeable change. Snape is not a buff adequately attractive male dilf with a tendency to bully Harry , with a deep voice .

Bro is a thin, scrawny, girly pop with long hair with feminine handwriting, an almost unhealthy acquaintances with rich death eaters. Snape was never a purist, and even his love for Lily being romantic is questionable ( I personally think it's more of a siblings like attachment thing ) . Bro just wanted to get powerful, and Malfoy was like, " Let me just take this socially dumb boy to shower him with fake praises and tell him that joining the death eaters will give him powerful ). Snape didn't go around killing muggleborn people. He barely hated anyone, and the group he was mad at had 3 people who tried to kill him. One almost succeeded ( Read the books. Sirius mentions this in the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Order of Pheonix )
