For some reason it only just dawned on me that just like sparrow's father, he fell for a woman from a higher class. Or atleast, thats his taste (Ashlynn, Holly, or Duchess)
I feel like we always talk about the many reasons Duchess goes back to Sparrow, but why does Sparrow always go back to her?? Like yes there’s the poetry of the fact that they’re both drawn to their downfall, for her a boy and for him a noble woman, and I think I talk about Duchess’ inner world a lot, but what about Sparrow?? Part of the beauty of his character is that we never see his perspective, so we can never truly grasp him except for through other characters’ perception of him, which we of course know he manipulates, but what about his inner world?? Through his actions and subtext, the only thing I can really think of is that he’s drawn to Duchess because she proves herself to be the kind of royal that can be thwarted in a way that other royals can’t be (that being they see him more as a rebel than they see him as a commoner, the opposite of Duchess who sees him as more of a commoner than a rebel, so they expect this behaviour from him and don’t intend as much to impose their will on him as she does)??? But I’m also definitely biased because I’m looking at this through swan shaped glasses and I’m not sure that this is a fair reading of his character. So I guess I’m just asking for your thoughts or your own suggestions as to why he keeps going back to her as much as she keeps going back to him
Fun Fact: Sparrows, just like swans, are monogamous and mate for life; and during courtship, males allow females to hit them to show interest. #CANON
Ok,ok, srly: Sparrow's old bio said that he had feelings for Duchess, thus implicitly that the reason he was helping Is because he wanted to win her over. So he's a gooner. However, since Sparrow doesn't have official bio (aka- complete doll profile), we can't take this as canon. But even if it was, knowing the character, Sparrow fell in love with her after spending time together, and not the other way around.
Sure, he probably wants to hits on her by default, but because he's a horny teenager—his desire to bang isn't enought for submitting to Duchess's psychological torture. So, there is something more. (note: I'm assuming the timeline is NTV -> Hunter and Ashlynn's diaries -> THD).
Duchess pov: I think reading it from Duchess's perspective is normal; after all, she's the main pov pf the relationship. In fact, I think it's a good starting point for trying to understand the situation
When the two first teamed up, there was actually a moment where she believed Sparrow, despite his bad boy facade, wanted to help her because he liked her, but we quickly find out why he went to her:
From this point on, Duchess's impression of Sparrow is that he's essentially a person who does nothing without getting something in return. She says this in subsequent chapters as well ("He's not trustworthy. All he cares about is himself") ("She wasn't angry, she knew he couldn't be trusted"). However, his betrayal also lets Duchess know that he's a person who does this kind of wicked work if asked, unlike her friends.
So at this point, an idea has crystallized in her mind: Sparrow stays with to her because she's the only one desperate enough to compromise herself morally to give him something. unlike for example Poppy, who has a crush on him,but prefers her morals.
This idea is reinforced by the H/A diaries: He stole Ash's ring on Duchess's orders. If we assume that Sparrow wanted to use Ashlynn's ring to ask her out, then that means Duchess was the first to tell him, "If you help me get Daring, I'll get you Ashlynn."
And here we come to THD: Duchess goes to Sparrow for help separating Hunter and Ashlynn, and in exchange he gets... nothing. And let's remember: this special is the moment when most of the audience met Duchess and Sparrow! Sure, their first appearance is in Shannon Hale's first book, where he's an asshole and she's a bitch. So the show is telling us, "These characters who have been unlikeable until now have a redeeming quality: They're very good friends and they care about each other."
She's very physical with him, and he calls himself her friend. Not an accomplice, but a friend. So evidently Sparrow has more reasons than just money/gain to be with her. Something in their relationship is deeper than mere alliance.
Sparrow pov: While his intentions towards Duchess were certainly born with utilitarian purposes, I believe that unlike her who remained stagnant in her perception of him, Sparrow actually has a type of personality that has led him to become genuinely fond of her...in his own way.
Sparrow's morality is actually similar to Duchess's. As much of an asshole as he is, it must be said that he has never actually shown any interest in evil crime. Selfish and self-centered? Yeah, evil? No. The reason he initially dislikes Raven is because he considers her evil. Sounds familiar?!:
And Sparrow actually seems to have noticed this similarity:
And this alone could be a first reason why he goes back to her: Duchess and Him are their own thing. out. She's not "One of the boy" nor a "romance girl" girl. Their relationship is theres and theres only. She's not a Merry Men with whom he has to have a relative moral code as their leader but she's not even a girl with whom there is any -textual- romantic purpose.
Which brings us to point 2: Sparrow clearly suffers from social envy in the books. This exchange with Daring sums it up for me.
If he was just after the money, they wouldn't have wanted to get an A on BadWolf's homework. He's ALSO interested in the notoriety that comes with the grade.
Which is interesting because, as much as there is classism on her part, Duchess actually seems to....romanticize him being a rebel.
His "non royal side" is a driven force to her being drawn to him despite everything, and he's likely aware of this. Remember that at the end of the first book, Sparrow argues with the Merry Men because he was too much of a jerk to Raven. Yet this edgy side of his seems to be exactly what Duchess needs from him.
So I think the essential factor is that Sparrow, who has an ego and is competitive, 1) appreciates the fact that a royal is under/dependent on him, as Duchess wants him under/dependent on her as a commoner
But also: Sparrow in Duchess has found someone who feels like him, on a character level.
So while Duchess, for various reasons (betrayal, social class, her own history), has difficulty consciously opening up to the idea of being his friend, Sparrow has actually accepted the fact that, well, the two of them are a good fit.
On the one hand, he considers her useful to his plans, but on the other, he feels genuine compassion for her because he's realized they're similar in their alienation. And obviously, plays on his ego, because she still owes him.
However, Sparrow has also no problem looking for a hypothetical replacement, precisely because he has an ego. A replacement that simply... doesn't exist tho. There are nice girls to hang out with, Holly's rejection won't make him sad. Ditto with the Merry Men, he has other friends anyway. But Duchess? The person who appreciates that he's genuinely a mess? Well, she's irreplaceable. They're both see that uglier side but it is not a reason for separation, on the contrary it keeps them united.
As Ethel Cain says in Crush: Good men die too, so I'd rather be with you. (Extremely them coded song btw)
sparrow and duchess are the kind of duo that clearly know they feel something for each other, but know that them ending up together won't be healthy for either of them. the kind that goes i'll stay with you until you cry out all your feelings about your destiny but i don't think i can ever muster up the courage to reach out and hold your hand. i'll be there on your wedding day, hell, i'll even walk you down the isle but i don't think i can be your groom or your bride. i'll go to bed with you after we've maybe had a little too much to drink and i'm seeing whole galaxies in your eyes, but i'll sneak out the door before the sun rises. i'll take all of the secrets and confessions and deepest darkest thoughts you've told me to my grave, but i'll ignore the biggest secret you and i have been keeping from each other all our lives
New Sparchess Ship Opinions
Currently going down a rabbit hole about Sparrow and Duchess for the whole week and the more I consume content of these two, the more I realize their dynamic can be so deep
Either it's one of the most messiest situationships you'll ever encounter (almost borderline toxic - I'm looking at you NTV book) or the most endearing meaningful ships where they understand each other and despite everything like their contrasting destinies, music & fashion taste, or social class, they find something beautiful in each other no else will ever get because all most people'll see is a selfish obnoxious duo (which they are but you get it)
Their ship isnt just a lazy but cunning teenage dirtbag musician with his high standard Lana del Rey ballet girl anymore. And I'm getting mixed feelings about obsessing over this opposites attract shtick. I can't help it they're so fun! (And angsty) they're the best content for hurt/comfort
100% Situationship & Duchess would rather keep it that way. Sparrow would too but only because there isn't a sure possibility that Duchess will stop being in denial knowing that she sticks to the corrupt destiny system

Even though I don't even ship them, I love these two morons because Sparrow will not hesitate to get into whatever sheninigans Duchess Swan cooks up.
She yells at him to stop playing so obnoxiously with his guitar and drags him towards Ashlynn and Hunter's secret date in True Hearts Day special. Which he happily goes along with.
Even when Sparrow claimed he was DONE with Duchess, a second later he claims,
"Nobody will tell me (about the party) because I'm friends with you." Which I will so glady call bullshit on.
I think a big part of the reason he wouldn't go is because he *actually was invited* as long as he ditched that "snitchy swan friend of his". Maybe by Charming or Hopper who he will sometimes hang out with as curtesy to Briar and Cupid who knows Duchess would do anything to get them in trouble. Sparrow Hood is not the kind of kid who ditches his friends over a party, especially if of them is his sneaky hotheaded traumatized ballerina.
Sparrow understands that Duchess is stuck in a tragic story with no autonomy, so she does things that to others that are seen as wicked and cruel, at least she would be free frol what is essentially her punishment. And to see other princesses like Ashlynn who are better off with her own stories break the rules seamlessly adds more insult to injury.
Sparrow, even though he thinks she shouldn't care about her destiny all that much as he doesn't, still helps her in the schemes because he also believes she does deserve a much happier ending. And if she isn't gonna be a Rebel, at least he will be the rebel for her.
And Duchess knows how much of a ride or die he is when it comes to her. Which is why she reacted nonchalant about Sparrow not being invited to the party because she knows he wouldn't come without her anyways. They understand each other in ways that they can trust and depend on each other without feeling judged, but at the same time keep each other somewhat grounded in reality. They work so good as team essentially.
Sparrow it’s ok you can accept that she’s your mom’s favourite child
Sparrow Hood Headcanons
His full name is Sparrow Richard Hood. He hates his middle name.
He is technically royalty on his mother’s side, as she is a noblewoman. But it’s a very distant lineage.
He’d have been held back a few grades, but Headmaster Grimm had implemented the “No Tale Left Behind” Policy a few decades before Sparrow was enrolled to fast-track destinies.
There are many aspects to Duchess’ possessive behaviour when it comes to Sparrow. I’ve talked about this first part in the rbs of a post before (can’t remember for the life of me which one) but her classist nature is inherent in her belief that she can control him— as a commoner, his will should obviously bend to that of a princess. Every time he doesn’t, it’s not just a personal offence to her, but it goes against the fundamental laws of her inner world where commoners exist to serve
However, the deeper layer, one that she’s possibly not ignorant to but would refuse to ever admit to herself, is it’s another aspect to her deep-seeded control issues as a result of the destiny system. We see part of that in the way she obsessively tries to get good grades and perfect her ballet as in next top villain where it’s literally explicitly stated, but it also adds to the way she expects to control Sparrow— it brings her comfort in the face of a future that she can’t control. In a world where she can’t control her own fate, controlling Sparrow makes her feel less powerless in her own life. In fact, her perfectionism is why I believe she keeps coming back to him; yes, she got it wrong last time, like a dance move in a performance, but she just has to try again because next time she’ll get it right
THE SPARROW WE COULDVE HAD
Couldn’t wait for the other day to post this for day 2 so, my fanon Sparrow Hood
Basically my fanon sparrow hood has piercings (hc that headmaster Grimm let him keep his piercings cause he’s following his destiny) Snakebites, double eyebrow piercings and gauges on both ears. Black nail polish, black ran down guyliner with smudged eyeshadow, fiercer eyebrows, RINGS. Gave him a fringe, I would’ve totally gave him liberty spikes if it weren’t for the hat! Gave him a spikey bracelet and studded ones too, turned his vest thingy into a battle jacket with patches of his band name and pins

Thinking about Sparrow Hood being in General Villainy despite being the next Robin Hood, a hero of the people, who protects commoners from corrupt officials. Thinking about how the only way you see Robin Hood as the villain is by being a corrupt official. Thinking about how Milton Grimm's manipulative ass, who refuses to admit the destiny system is broken because it keeps him in power, put the next Robin Hood in General Villainy and what that says about him

why do u hate sparrow so much? (you have my full support in your hatred btw he's annoying as fuck i'm just curious to know your reasons)
Dumbass haircut and goatee FIRST OF ALL (that's reason enough)
Second of all, Robin hood is one of my absolute FAVORITE fairytales. He just did it for the love of the game and I hate when people butcher his character. He was kind and anti-cop and just wanted to help out his fellow man. I also don't like the Shrek version because of this mischaracterization, but he sings a silly song so it's more ok. Sparrow is nothing like him and I get it, rebellious teen and I also do not read about that man so idk what psychological issues he's got going on up there. But I really don't like him because he is everything Robin Hood is not.
And lastly that man is so god awful !! He's mean to Duchess and everyone else. I, again, have not read much about him but he just doesn't interest me. While Robin is nice for the love of the game he is mean for the love of the game. Also mind you, recently I've only read Duchess's book so if he's nice and considerate in another one (doubt it) idk about it. But what stuck out to me about him was when he knew Duchess was struggling with her destiny and herself he decided to take her score that she was basing her worth off of. And had even made a joke about her destiny before hand, also his voice is annoying. Let's just say if I went to ever after I would make it my mission to sabotage that man. This is also coming from me hating him as a child, but I also didn't like Duchess so maybe there's room for change.
(You can tell that I'm afraid of rendering a guitar so I just plastered it and called it a day)
My delusional ahh will believe that bro is dedicating a song to Duchess
