Chapter One - “Wicked Plans Lead To Nowhere”
Stories of Good and Evil to Royal and Rebels,
Evangeline Queen, daughter of Raven Queen— whose tale was changed to blaze a new path. Safe to say she was not necessarily evil, Apple White still had her happily ever after,she just happened to have it a bit...earlier in her story.
The dark-purple haired girl sits and weeps on floor-level stairs, having to deal with excessive mind-blogging for her bookstory assignment where they have to find and present the history of Ever After’s legendary relics.
A second passes, and a confident girl with dyed black hair with her blonde roots showing approaches Evangeline, “What’s up Evangie!— Oh, what’s gotten your kingdom upside down, hm?” Marigold White; The Daughter of Apple White, heir to the throne of an iconic fairy tale figure.
“It’s our bookstory class assignment…I-I don’t know what to do, every idea is like, taken by some student already!” Evangeline covered her face with her calloused hands, worry gnawing over her.
“Y’know, since you got the Evil— Uhm, sorry, I mean, your mom’s powers..You could try to cast a spell for ideas! That wouldn’t go wrong, right?” Marigold blinked her oh-so long eyelashes, hands clasping while her shoulders raised in expectation.
The idea immediately made Evangeline fix her posture, fingers snapping “Wicked idea.”
They both shared smiles, before Marigold bid goodbye and walked away. “The thing is, little ol’ Evangeline does not have a well-prepared spell that exactly caters to that idea…unless I wing it!” A snap again, Evangeline starts to recite a few words that form a magical spell— a purplish glow starts to seep and show. “It’s working! Aha, and boom!” A snap again, and a temporary inscription was summoned.
Evangeline takes it— it had something written on it, “Know what you want, whatever you seek, to have no trouble finding it, here’s a peek.” The inscription dissolved into pieces, taking Evangeline into a shock. “Woah..” A comically wide purplish arm starts to lengthen, almost like it was giving…directions to somewhere! “Total page-ripper…”
Evangeline followed the arm, her heels clanking against the cold marble floors of Ever After High. It lead her to the hallway of dormitories, before the arm stopped it’s destination at…Raven Queen’s old dorm. Evangeline walked toward, the more she neared, the more the arm faded. “I wonder what it lead me into. Why..Why would it go to my mom’s old dorm?” Evangeline’s hand touched the door, attempting to force the door open but instead she just pushed herself down. “Oof… Why’s the door not locked?” Her eyes widened as she looked at the room. It was still…in pristine condition. All of Raven and Apple’s stuff was still in the dorm room. It didn’t feel right.
“Huh? That arm, it’s here again..” The arm then used its fingers to point at a drawer, at Raven Queen’s side of the dorm. Evangeline then opened the drawer, the reveal of what’s inside took her breath away. “The..Story Book of Legends? But I thought mom shelved it…!” Evangeline immediately took the book into her hands, opening the book, it still had its pages— some signatures were signed, the only ones that weren’t were: Raven Queen, Apple White and Briar Beauty. “Wait, but didn’t my mom sign the..unless this was the fake that my mom told me about..” Instead of disappointment, Evangeline took the book into her arms, hugging it while giggling. “I’ll just make up a story that the Story Book of Legends wasn’t exactly shelved, my mom just took it!”
Evangeline then spent the rest of her time examining and roaming around the room till the day fell into noon. “I should get going...” But Evangeline saw just how comfy her mom’s old bed looked. Okay, fine, just a feel…”Huh, this feels nice…” And the fate of Briar Beauty hit her— fast asleep, snoring.
She woke up in a cold sweat, her breath was heaving. “Where..” Evangeline examined the room she was in, before relief sets in as she realized she was now in her dorm room. But a thought lingers in her mind, how could her mom’s dorm still exist, with all of her stuff in it? “I won’t overthink it…I gotta keep up with my bookstory assignment though!..”
And so, Evangeline started working on her bookstory assignment— forging a newly made story of the Story Book of Legends, like making up how her mother shelved it. “This’ll do…If people don’t believe me, especially my professor, I’m totally booked! But I’ll try to just cast a spell if things go wrong.”
The daughter of Raven Queen wasn’t necessarily evil nor kind. She was a smart girl after all, and finds the easiest way to help herself just like her mother.
The day of the presentation of her bookstory class assignment, every student gathered around in a wide classroom of tiered seats. Every one of them spoke in the front, presenting numerous stories. It was then Evangeline’s turn, the moment made her gulp, a nervous sweat was falling.
“Okay so uh…” Evangeline looked around, her eyes locked with Marigold’s. A squint. “Today, I present..the..” it felt like an instant drumroll was there. “Story Book of Legends.” Gasps everywhere as Evangeline announced what she had to present. “T-The..what now?” Marigold’s voice winced, her voice was squeaky just like her mom’s.
“Miss Queen.” Their professor cleared their throat. “What exactly are you on about? Are you..as mad as a Hatter?” An offended ‘HEY!’ Was heard from the back of the classroom— it was from Mazarine Hatter, daughter of Madeline Hatter, who was right now rubbing her tea cup clean. “Apologies, Miss Hatter. Anyway, Miss Queen..you may proceed.”
This was totes awkward! “Royally bad situation…No one’s gonna believe me..” People didn’t stop with their conversations and gossiping, most of the students in the class were basically judging her. “Everyone..just..just stop!” She swayed her fingers, casting everyone to go completely still and frozen in time. Evangeline’s eyes widened, “What have I done…?” She looked at her hands, not believing her ability to do such a thing.
She snapped her fingers, looking directly at Marigold, whose face was frozen into a winced expression before being able to change it once again. “Evangeline…you..” Marigold’s breath hitched, but she wasn’t sad. “I-It’s alright, royally!..I mean, isn’t it normal for you..? N-Not in that kinda way!” Marigold rubbed the back of her head with an awkward chuckle to lighten up the situation.
“Marigold….” Evangeline said with a sneer that disappears the second she said the girl’s name. “I just…didn’t know I could do that…My mom told me about it but wow that’s just..WICKED..” Evangeline smiles, accepting her nature. She then snapped her fingers again, this time, she looked at Mazarine. “Hat-tastic! Really, Vangie! You flipped my tiered hat over that!” Mazarine smiled, finishing with one of her tea cups before moving on to clean another one. “I don’t know if that’s ’hat-tastic’, but if it makes sense to you, then so be it.” Evangeline sighed, her hands on the book. Marigold looked at Evangeline, feeling somewhat sympathy.
“The Story Book of Legends…” Marigold uttered, walking down the side-stairs to approach Evangeline. “Where did you get such thing, anyway? I-I mean, not to doubt you or anything, just a question.”
“You’re always like that, Mari.”
“Just answer me, Geline.”
“I….” Evangeline was sent to a pause, making her bite her lips out of frustration. Her eyes turned purple, thus something inside of her begins to..twist.
As Evangeline spoke, a distorted voice accompanied hers. “You know what, Mari? This is all YOUR fault. If you didn’t tell me to use one of my cursed made up spells to find what I’m looking for, I wouldn’t be here making everyone freeze with yet again one of my spells. If you don’t—“ Evangeline pointed directly to Marigold.
“W-What?…What’s gotten into you, Geline?.. W-What’s so wrong?..” Marigold’s eyebrows furrowed, backing away while Evangeline continued to press further into the space between them.
“Evangeline!” Mazarine’s voice spoke up, catching both of the girl’s attention. “I am trying to clean up here!” Silence spoke for all of them, before a squeaky ‘thank you’.
Evangeline’s eyes turned normal, still in disbelief but she pushed forward, prioritizing the mental state of Marigold. “I-I’m so sorry…I don’t know what’s gotten into me, please Mari— I didn’t mean to sound like that to you…”
“Geline…It’s..alright. I know how hard it is,” Marigold then tucks a lock of hair behind her ear, her face was looking down but Evangeline could still see a sincere smile. “How hard it is to inherit powers of the destined Evil Queen, but you know, Evangeline? I’m not gonna be like how my mom was to your mom.” Marigold chuckled. “Besides, your mom was…A good queen to the Apple White.”
She placed a hand on Evangeline’s shoulder. “Even if the so called Story Book of Legends of yours is real, I won’t force you to do anything, I swear.” Marigold continued, now she knelt down and picked up the Story Book of Legends that was on the floor, and handed it over to Evangeline but still kept a tight grip to say the last bit of what she had to tell to Evangeline. “You’re too good for this, Evangeline. Believe in yourself that you can fight back that evil inside of you, just like your mom.”
Evangeline stood still, she then took the book from Marigold. “I…Marigold..” She couldn’t put what she had in mind to words, making her mumble words that don’t even make sense. Marigold chuckles. “It’s okay, Geline…” She rolls her eyes, closing the distance between them. “Now just undo the still spell that you had cast on the whole class. I believe in you, that you can do it.” Marigold then winked with a smile. Eventually, Evangeline calms down, undoing the still spell on each student one by one with a snap of her finger.
After a few minutes of undoing, Evangeline looked down with shame, her hand gripping on to her other arm. “Miss Queen.” Their professor broke the silence. “As I was saying; you may proceed.”
After everything that happened? Evangeline was just…too uncomfortable to continue. “I’m sorry, professor— But I..have to go..!” Evangeline dashed, leaving everyone in a shock, especially Marigold. “Evangeline no!—“ Was the last thing Evangeline heard before completely disappearing. Their professor then just shrugged the whole situation off, fixing her glasses and clearing her throat. “Let us forget that unruly moment of Evangeline Queen, and proceed with Marigold White’s work.”
“O-Oh, yes! Haha…yes, that..” Marigold let the lock of hair that she put up free, symptoms of nervousness came crashing. ‘I can’t just do this right after my best friend crashed out. This isn’t right, I have to go after her…but I’ll…No…’ Marigold just shut her eyes, and continued on with her presentation with unease.
