can we appreciate Milligan & his adamant conviction not to kill anyone unless there’s literally no other way? like this man is a spy in a book where ‘never say die’ is not a thing. I mean, no one actually dies, but it’s clear & stated that the Ten Men have no qualms about killing people, or hurting children. The Ten Men are Milligan’s foes. When Milligan is fighting men who are trying to kill him, he still goes out of his way not to do anyone real harm.
I mean, these men and their employer are the reason he lost his memories for ten year, why he was separated from his motherless toddler daughter for a decade (83% of her life in book 1, guys), they have hurt him, hurt his friends — Kate struggles with the moral stance of whether or not its ok to kill them (she’s thirteen) because of these very reasons, Milligan doesn’t, and when she has her revelation, it’s not that she won’t do it, it’s that she could never do it. It wasn’t deciding not to do it, it was realizing she can’t, because she’s not that kind of person. Kate realizes — with a certain degree of disappointment but also a degree of pride — she could never do it, could never do something that would make her more like her enemy and less like her father.
Her enemy: no qualms about killing people. Her father: qualms about killing people. Both don’t discriminate. Instead of killing the Ten Men, Milligan chooses to drop off a cliff to fake his death/escape. He gave them a run for his money when going out of his way not to kill anyone; there’s a very good chance he would have won if he didn’t care. But Milligan won’t compromise his morals (‘so what if he drowns who cares serves him right they deserve it etc’ ‘we’re not like them kate that’s the entire point in trying to stop them’). He will not take lives unless there’s no other option, but if there’s a cliff to dive off of, then he’ll take it. He’s a spy, the best in the business, fast as a tiger and clever as a fox. But he never had a chance, really. The man had an absurd reluctance to do anyone real harm. You should have seen the lengths he went to just avoid killing Crawlings, who was doing everything he could to dash him to pieces. and these are terrible men. But he still won’t kill and I just think that’s extremely admirable in him, because he’s an adult spy who’s been in horrific missions and whatnot. I’m rambling on and not being very coherent, but let’s just take this moment to appreciate Milligan.
I am constantly seeing people trying to puzzle out what's "ruining books" and it makes me more and more tired. Read a different book. You have more choice in reading material than at any other point in all of history. No one thing can be ruining ALL of them.

getting fixated on something is funny because the first like week i have an insatiable need to tell everyone i know about it and spread the good word but by weeks 2 and 3 it becomes so intense and personal that even hearing it mentioned in public makes me sweat as if a dark secret was alluded to
