i don't like to yuck people's yum but i have to say that my least favorite thing to come from the current state of Artists on the Internet is the idea of a sketchbook as something nice and pretty and shareable. like i love me a notebook full of gorgeous art don't get me wrong but that is NOT what a sketchbook is. a sketchbook is my friend who i carry around everywhere like a purse chihuahua. it is the physical manifestation of my notes app. it is the container into which i wring my brain out. it is my therapist. and most of all it is filled with absolutely terrible sketches that should never see the light of day.

this post is making the rounds again and the amount of people saying that the pretty sketchbooks phenomenon ruined sketchbooks for them is HEARTBREAKING and i stand by my opinion that sketchbooks should be like a jar you put your OCs in. and then you shake them around in there. that's what they're for

#it took a while for me to stop being like ‘i can’t use this sketchbook because it’s so nice and my art is so bad’#i have these really pretty sketchbooks with embroidery on the cover so I consider them kind of fancy…#junk journaling and collages is what finally snapped me out of the ‘my art isn’t hood enough for this sketchbook’ idea #which is NOT to say either of those is ugly at all #it just reintroduced me to why i got into art in the first place which was expression fun and experimentation #so now some of thhe art in my sketchbook is REALLY ugly and some it is actually kind of nice #at least i’m having fun again #so thank you internet creators who introduced me to junk journaling

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).

When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".

When the boat is still being built, your say "it".

When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".

When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".

When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.

If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").

If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")

If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").

If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.

If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.

I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

#my mom was and still is a huge west wing fan #so it was always on and i remember the first time i saw this scene my mom was folding laundry in her bedroom with the tv on #she was very quiet during this scene #i think she stopped folding laundry #it’s still one of the more intense monologues i’ve seen and maybe that’s because it had an impact on me as a kid #i can’t remember if this was before or during the time i was briefly in catholic school #i feel like the two at least happened very close together #i certainly saw it when i was in catholic school but i don’t know if that was a rewatch or not #i wonder how much those two events intermingled
