little sorcerer aged fifteen
(redraw of 'little dancer aged fourteen by edgar degas, some yapping undercut)
aight so heres the original - i have like, almost genuine beef with this sculpture because on one hand (with the fact it was degas, the guy famous from his hatred and vouyerism of exploited GIRLS and women) i despise it and it makes me sick to my stomach a little. on the other its pretty fucking brilliant. the piece itself with the original being made from wax is revolutionary, and this kind of meta creation where the structure itself is art?? i'm jealous of the skill, but again. its degas. ugh. i do believe i saw a bronze copy in real life once upon a time. just an impression of memory, though.
but this exact feeling of disgust towards the creator, the subject being a kid full of ambition and so at risk of.. every kind of harm that can come her way. really reminded me of megumi, to like,, an uncomfortable degree. and this article about it from the national gallery that carries the original? only amplified how mixed my feelings on this piece are. i need a letterboxd, but for art pieces actually.
back to my rendition tho!! you can probably guess this piece is very heavily alluding to megkuna/sukufushi because ughh theyre worms in my brain and i need to get it out. the handkerchief around megumi's neck is a reference to both the little dancer's white bow and sukuna's hiten - a weapon heavily implied to be connected to 10 shadows and/or shadow manipulation. the rope is taken from fubahachimangu shrine torii. yknow. shrine, blessing. i also wanted something that called back to the fabric tutu of the original, without straying too far from megumi's base design. (also makora has a very similar piece on their chest). the red background is a shoutout to megumi's chapter cover of ch43. you may notice megumi's clothes are exactly up to par with his canon design and that's on purpose - it's vaguely his work outfit before enrollment. because ykno he was doomed since before the story started.
this is more proof of concept than anything.
