Nothing about the war was ever “said and done”. That would imply that the war had a nice clean ending and no one felt the repercussions of it anymore. But everyone did, even the kids born after it. It’s like you buried and burned the remaining bodies after the battle, but the ash and blood still linger in the air.

But that’s a line of thought that Ron has to cut off before it starts. It’s been a while since a fire in the hearth has led him down that road, but he’s exhausted and sore in the physical and emotional sense. Didn’t even make it to his bed, but the couch is about as comfortable as the ones in the common room used to be. Eyes still closed, he turns his face away from the flickering and dancing light.

Underneath him, another chest rises and falls slowly. Above him, a charmed book flips to the next page. Overpowering the subtle wood smoke is something clean and a little spicy, but also sweet. Ron still hasn’t figured out what combination of bath products, cologne, and aftershave Viktor uses to achieve it. He’ll have to settle for keeping his Bulgarian around, he guesses. And then snuggles deeper into the sweater that Viktor had taken to wearing around the house as soon as the temperature started dropping.

Viktor must have been pulled out of his book by Ron’s wiggling because very soon after Ron feels fingers carding through his hair. There’s a soft thud as the book floats and lands on the side table. Something warmer than the fire a few feet away builds in Ron’s chest at the thought that he can still have Viktor’s undivided attention without even trying.

Viktor stumbles when the Portkey drops him off in warm sand. It takes a few deep breaths for the initial wave of nausea to pass, and then he straightens, closing his eyes and enjoying the salty breeze coming from the sea. It’s strange how much this place always feels like coming home, this secluded, picturesque cliffside in Cornwall – much more than his own house, that’s for sure. For a moment, he allows himself the memory of the walls that always feel a little too bare, the bed that always feels temporary and not quite right, and he knows he’s made the right decision in coming here.

It’s not just the scenery, though: ever since he announced his official retirement, all the wizarding magazines in Europe have been betting on his return, hounding his every step, constructing more and more ridiculous theories about his life, and there’s just something about finding a couple of Extendable Ears in his front garden every month that would grate on any sane person’s nerves.

So when Fleur’s letter arrived, it did not take much thinking to decide. You could come early, she wrote, even though you probably won’t have much peace. Apparently, the whole Weasley family has been in an uproar about the upcoming wedding for weeks now, and Bill has set his mind on acquiring some rare magical politics book for Hermione from a peddler in Cayenne; and I refuse, Viktor, I REFUSE to put my child through transatlantic travel if she has a perfectly responsible godfather who could watch her while recovering from his sordid affairs with Romanian vampire models.

How she keeps finding the articles about him in all the obscure South-European wizarding tabloids, Viktor does not know; what he does know is that she will tease him mercilessly while also offering sympathy about the horrible, horrible ways of the wizarding press.

*Ron stares, feeling his heat race*

Fred and George, from across the shop: We’re closed you ninny! Go on your date somewhere else

Ron let the newspaper fall to the floor and closed his eyes. It didn’t make any difference, because the image he kept playing in his head like a three second movie on a loop, with the headline conveniently repeating itself in his ears.

Ron groaned. He hated how much this affected him, it made him feel like a pathetic loser. Well actually, that newspaper was three weeks old, which meant that he was more like the king of pathetic losers.

Is not like Blaise was cheating on him. They had only been out a few times before he had to leave London on a ‘business trip’, and Ron apparently got unnecessarily attached to what was clearly just a fling. Just another fling. But it still hurt that Blaise hadn’t said anything to him, and he could have considering it certainly looked like this wasn’t his first time meeting Viktor Krum.

Ron knew that Blaise returned tonight and they had agreed to meet up as soon as that happened, per Ron’s suggestion back before Blaise left. He had been so blissfully naive and smitten with the man that seeing him as soon as he came back had seemed like the best idea.

Right now though, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to see Blaise or his ridiculously charming smile.
