My Theelin/Thi'Ilen Worldbuilding Pt. 2: The Arts
Part 1 / Part 2
the second installment in my series of long rambles about a culture I made up!
this is a companion piece to my conlang, Kule'Ilen, and I highly recommend you check it out, as I will occasionally be using some words from it.
now, onto the backbone of Theelin society: the arts!
In Theelin culture, art was considered a form of magic, and since they believed magic infused all things, everything was an art, from farming to fighting, smithing to architecture, teaching to politics. thus, the arts were divided into three categories: kana'llale, kana'balu, and kana'ha'raha.
Kana'llale, meaning "heart-magic" ("heart" being the organ in your chest), covers physical labor, like farming, and activities with practical purpose, like weaving, metalworking, and architecture. fighting and, subsequently, war are also included in this category.
Kana'balu, meaning "mind-magic", covers what we would consider to be the "traditional" arts: dance, song, painting, jewelry-making, etc. It is any activity we do that has little to no physical impact on the world around, and that we do as tradition or simply for fun.
Kana'ha'raha, meaning "soul-magic", consists of religion, history, storytelling, and the supernatural. This part of the Theelin arts also contains what we would consider to be actual magic, kana'e'uru (basically benevolent witchcraft).
technically, there is a fourth category, but it's not truly considered one of the "arts". Kana'ufa'ta, meaning "tail-magic". while the name might sound a bit silly, it is taken very seriously. Kana'ufa'ta contains everything that is considered taboo and then some. it contains every measure of crime, from simple pick-pocketing to full-on genocide, cultural sins like using the wrong pronouns for someone (their main god is a trans guy, it's a BIG DEAL), anything that defies the natural order of the world (ie. necromancy/the undead), and fobo'saqui magic. Fobo'saqui magic, and fobo'saqui in general, are a relatively new development in the 20,000-year long history of the Theelin. basically, about 4,000 years prior to the Clone Wars, something happened. more specifically, someone happened.
Darth Phobos.
it's a long story, but essentially, Darth Phobos was a Theelin Sith Lord who was so overwhelmingly powerful that the Sith and the Jedi willingly teamed up for the sole purpose of getting rid of her. even then, her cult lived for another thousand or so years, plus a simulated version of her was used in the Insight portion of the Knighthood trials in the Jedi temple.
so, news of this super-evil Theelin who was so evil that the evil people said she had to go eventually reached the ears of the wider Theelin community, and they grew to fear her so much that they outlawed the kind of magic she used, as a way to avoid something like her from ever happening again. it is from her title, Phobos, that the word fobo'saqui sprang. though it meant something closer to "Sith" or "darksider" at first, it eventually came to encompass any bad person who used magic to do bad things.
the reason it is called "tail-magic" is because the Theelin evolved from an ancestor that had a tail, but they were eventually filtered out. saying someone is "trying to get back their tail" means that the person is being especially greedy or prideful, often for no discernible reason. thus, "tail-magic" is actions that are directly greedy, prideful, or sinful.
i'll explain why exactly they're so important to Theelin culture in another post, but for now, that's everything I have to say.
a huge thank you to anyone who made it this far in my ramblings!
as a thank you, you get a forehead smooch! mwahâŁ
