Thanks to cutting edge tracking technology, Baltimore is probably the best known wild snowy owl in history. You can see real footage of him (not just animations) in our new video:

âQâ Names âHot Fussâ a Modern Classic, Interviews Brandon Flowers in 30th Birthday Special Issue
Q, in a special issue dedicated to their 30th birthday, has named The Killersâ âHot Fussâ a modern classic.
Q also has a brief interview with Brandon Flowers. Â This interview appears to have been conducted earlier this year, perhaps sometime in February, as Flowers confirms that The Killers were set to work with Elton John on their fifth studio album. Â However, it appears that this never came to pass as Elton John was forced to cancel the writing session due to an illness.
This update has been added to The Killersâ Fifth Studio Album page.Â
Also of note in the brief interview, Brandon says his greatest highlights of the last thirty years are:
Playing âThunder Roadâ with Bruce Springsteen in Belgium at a festival. Playing Wembley Stadium. Opening for Morrissey. Those real pinch-me moments.
While this special edition of Q is already available digitally, it should be on newsstands Tuesday May 31, 2016.
Hereâs a video of Brandon Flowers performing âThunder Roadâ with Bruce Springsteen at Pinkpop in May of 2009.

I donât know why it took me so damn long to read Rebecca Solnitâs Men Explain Things to Me. As someone who writes about female sexuality, consent, and rape culture for a living, Solnitâs book should have been considered required reading. Becauseâthough the book as a whole is about the gender wars in generalâthe two pieces that really donkey-kicked me in the gut were the ones that tackled domestic violence and sexual assault.
In âThe Longest War,â Solnit writes that every three years, the death toll from domestic violence âtops 9/11âs casualties, though no one declares war on this particular kind of terror.â In â#YesAllWomen,â Solnit writes about the changing conversation around rape culture, and on how womenâs voices are growing louder, and their experiences more visible.
Reading this slim collection was like hearing a rallying cry, and I knew it should be required reading not just for me, but for all men and women.
But beyond Solnitâs book, what else should be on the curriculum?

Pork shoulder, cauliflower and cheese curds are all trending in 2016, according toGoogleâs tracking of food-related searches. That list might either nauseate you or make your mouth water.
Our food preferences are intensely personal, but scientists have tried to figure out why some people are so picky about the things they eat. Jane Kauer is anthropologist who has studied this topic at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Monell Chemical Sciences Center. Sheâs also a board member of the youth nutrition company Rebel Ventures. She recently spoke with Here & Now co-host Jeremy Hobson.

Electron microscope video of a needle on a vinyl record.
Two incredible things:
1. This was much harder to make than it looks! To achieve this resolution with an electron microscope, it took 10 seconds to capture each frame of this âvideo.â The traditional 30 frames per second video was impossible. Instead, this is stop motion - like those Wallace and Gromit cartoons. Ben Krasnow of the youtube channel Applied Science took a picture, moved the record slightly, then took another image and on and on. Because electron microscopes canât image electrical insulators, he had to coat the whole thing with a thin, thin layer of silver. You can watch the whole process in this video.
2. This gif not only shows us what a record looks like up close - itâs a visualization of the vibrations that make a song! If you took those wavy shapes into a digital player, you could actually hear the song being played.
While my depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder are mostly managed, after all these years I still have my days here and there where I need to practice a bit of extra self-care and curl up with a book. I donât read just any book. I certainly donât read a book I havenât read before, because the uncertainty of events in the book can make me extra anxious at a time where Iâm already feeling a bit fragile. I donât read a short book, because what if it doesnât do the trick by the time I finish it? What if I finish the book and then I have the added gloom that happens after a book is over? So, I reread Harry Potter.
