His counselor told him he didnβt seem committed to getting better, which was not a thing Matt thought your counselor was allowed to say to you.
And then, when he said βYou donβt seem very committed to this session,β after he caught her glancing at the clock, sheβd had the nerve to get offended! She was literally being paid to be here! Nobody was paying Matt to get off codeine, benzos, Nyquil, heroin, risky sex, the ledge, uppers, downers. His high-sodium diet.
He spent three hours queueing for a nutritionist to tell him to stop eating chips and doing so many kebab runs.
Refill of Subutex, refill of Prozac, refill of Wellbutrin.
Kind of a local celebrity, down at the pharmacy. A jolly figure in Converse and ripped-knee jeans.
He puttered around the aisles with a plastic basket hanging off his elbow. Box of plasters, box of nasal strips. Iodized table salt. Condoms. Not that he had anyone to use them on, per se. Any plans, per se.
His flat was too full of garbage to have anyone over and Matt rattled too much when he moved, with his bottles and blisters of pills, to be inconspicuous anymore among the skinny Hulme Park bushes.
Two years ago Matt had walked down the middle of a street with his shirtsleeve on fire. Now, aged 24, he lived the grand life of a retiree, nodding off at 2030, over a pack of frozen chicken fingers, the heat off the TV set and some expiring fruit jam.
Out back of the computer shop where he worked, Matt smoked a cigarette and rubbed the bald spot on his arm where the burn had landed. Hair no longer grew there, but he didnβt mind it too much, he didnβt love how furry he was overall. Lot of effort to shave thoughβor to burn oneself all overβand so he didnβt. Work was boring and paid okay. He had a little bit of money saved now he wasnβt pouring it down the hole of drugs. Heβd been having vague images of bundling himself onto a plane and flying over to where Mello was at, plowing holes through lots of fluffy clouds to show up with his strip of condoms and himself and see what Mello thought of that.
Time passed and it was January and Matt had been sober for another year. He quit his job for one that paid slightly higher but was 2 stops farther on the Tube. He negotiated the steps of his new station, finding where the snacks were sold, the cigarettes. Sometimes he was late for work because of construction. He opened some days, closed up others, pulling down the clacking metal security grate. One afternoon on his day off, he found himself clicking around the airline booking sites. It didnβt cost as much to fly to America as heβd have guessed. Petrol was cheap; the pound was up. He negotiated the forms to get himself a ticket. The website reminded him he could cancel without fees as long as he took action within 24 hours. The day passed, and he didnβt.
Matt didnβt so much slide into the DMs as clutch and climb in, jittering and gurning, and then cling onto the doorjamb refusing to get out.
MATT: cool party
MATT: loked like
MELLO: It was fine. Work thing.
MATT: wowww work thing!!
MATT: whatt a crazy life
MATT: club bumpin
MATT: ladies xpecially bumpinnn >o>
Mello read the message, then exited the thread; he didnβt look at his phone for the next 90 hours. New York on a June evening was stuffed with shining surfaces: neon, fountain shake, pavement shimmer off dropped dress sequins. Life moved here, not like back in grey Winchester. Everywhere, deals being made, everyone walking with purpose, the backs of their shoes stepped on with their haste to get on with it. Crypto swam through the air like the odor off a kebab cart. And Mello was hungry. He wanted to eat songbirds and the comfort off the indolent rich.
Making money felt good; last week heβd gotten high and sat in his bathtub with a couple of bands, rubbing the bills up and down his arms.
So he was dating a woman; well, what complaints did Matt have? Her arse was even skinner than Mattβs; she was like a little dickless boy; she was an Equinox junkie, sometimes she did 4 classes a day and then Barre for cooldown. She had breasts but Mello didnβt have to look at them if he turned her over. She liked being turned over. She was a half-Brazilian half-Norwegian model who thought it was sexy when Mello spoke Russian, even though half the time Melloβs Russian was Ukrainian. She couldnβt tell the difference, which was ideal. Matt was a freak for languages. He spoke Cobol and a surprisingly passable Surzhyk.
[MELLO is offline.]
The problem with Matt was that you couldnβt give him anything, not a millimeter, not a breath or piece of hair. If you texted him a vile insult it still made him happy, brimful with your acknowledgement. Matt could run off air and a peanut shell, affection-wise, obsession-wiseβthere was no difference with him, between Mello and lines on tables, he was blissful either way, cutting and chopping and sniffing and screwing and sputtering and reaching round your hip for more.
Mattβs idea of a workout was the half-crunch to fetch his cigarette off the nightstand.
MATT: sk whenss the wefding
MATT: j can give a spech
MATT: sleech
The thing was, that Mello had to be a different type of person now. Different friends body style face stride posture place in the world. He was cultivating an American accent. He was cultivating saying he was from Russia. He was running upgraded firmware, fucking hardass shit, a sexy version, like, 21.x, while Matt was hung up on the beta release of Mello that had weak wrists and who kissed.
[MATT is offline.]
Lot of onion layers ago, the beta version.
[MELLO is online.]
[MELLO is invisible.]
How easy to vanish; just a swipe of the thumb. Shaking, a little; he was starting to come down now. It was cold in the bathtub. His fingers felt numb and all their bones. Letter-by-letter, he typed painfully: I miss you, and felt his whole body flush.
Mello had started a LinkedIn, like the twat he was aiming to become.
βAiming toββbecause Matt still remembered well when he used to cut his hair with scissors. His black nail polish, his lipstick phase. He was a faggot in a 800-pound suit. Matt knew the core of him. He wasnβt letting go of that, not easily.
Matt lay on his back on his bed in his flat, picking memories sweatily off his damp fingertips. βInvestment bankingβ. βI-Bankingβ, for those in the know. Sounded like Eye Banking. A safe full of sclera. Matt had been βeye bankingβ the boys down in Hulme Park in the backwash swill of 0200 Saturdays, pocketful of lorazepam to take the edge off. On about 3 to 3 and a half milligrams of lorazepam he started to really feel good about cruising, heβd catch a rhythm and a glide, prowling the bushes and benches like a sickass panther, a sickass shark, deep sailing over the continental rift.
Mello had an advanced degree; Matt had an appointment at the free clinic on Nell Lane. Mello got a promotion and Matt got chlamydia. Matt got a prescription. Matt got antibiotics for his burning stream.
He would stand in the bathrooms in the mornings, holding himself with three fingers and pissing painfully, and picture all of Melloβs accomplishments at the bottom of the toilet bowl. His straight As, twisted teeth, his delicate six-pack, the whole effortful torso. But he lost his footing when he got to his beautiful face, framed in metal, like stained glass. His hand shook and he splashed a little on the rim. No, he couldnβt do it, he could never sustain any kind of rageβanarchy, remotely-detonated devices, and the guillotine, fine, the blade plucked loose from the razor fineβbut against Mello, never. Already his fingers ached to pick him out of the effluvia where Matt had cast him, to wash him in the tender bath of Mattβs tongue and mouth: Hello, darling, itβs been so long.

Lando watched the video back. The trouble wasnβt just that Daniel looked fit, but that, through the lens, it was obvious thatΒ sheΒ thought he was fit.

such a silly ask but do you imagine mattmello and their environments and ocs and such as animated when you write them? magnolia has such great visual language i can totally imagine some of the scenes as being in their own niche anime lol
not at all a silly ask op - if by "imagine" you mean "mentally picture", i mostly don't picture anything when i write!
tldr; i'm close to aphantasic, for example on this chart, i'm around a 4. i've had a hard time explaining this to people in the past so made a little example below π€ if you asked me to close my eyes and picture a beach, the right image is similar to what i'd "see":
and that's if i focus on visualizing something - so when i'm concentrating on writing, i tend to not "see" anything at all, or i get very short flashes of images like the above. (all to say re: your question, i guess.. no...?)
digression from your ask, but i think it's so super cool when people leave comments that a fic was "visual" or gave them interesting mental images, because it's amazing how we can experience the same thing so differently. yall are seeing shrimp colors i can't even imagine! just 1 small part of why reading is so awesome and writing is so awesome wahoooo!! let's all collaborate together 4ever <3
i was tagged very kindly by @bakugeorge to post the last line i'd written, but for a long time there was no last line to be had.. but now mattmelloweek (mattmellomonth) is approaching and the line is here, and it's gross:
Matt didnβt so much slide into the DMs as clutch and climb in, jittering and gurning, and then cling onto the doorjamb refusing to get out.
stalking the mmweek tumblr has yielded me @vamphorica @wholegrainz4200 @overkeehl but honestly + anyone else who plans to write for this event :) the world wants to hear your sentencesππππ
