It took about 200 forms but I've finally gotten approval to move some handheld Class-4 particle accelerators to the "free-to-print sex toys" section of my floret's (very restricted) compiler. She has a data corruption kink and truly random bit-flips "feel the hottest," and she's got near-realtime incremental backups anyway, so I don't see what all the fuss was about. It's not like they can do real damage like the Class-2s I keep for supervised use only.

You'd think that taking a floret would confer a greater understanding of Terran identity and social roles but the pronouns they've settled on apparently mean "inanimate object" which is obviously extremely cute and worthy of respect but also holy shit this is more complicated than I thought. Apparently the main ones are based on association with aesthetic traditions loosely correlated to reproductive role but there are so many others and it turns out they're very important to Terran identity. Anyone got, like, a textbook I can borrow?
In common Terran It/its are very good pronouns that are also used for animate objects, genderless Sophonts, animals, and events!

Since my initial question I've discovered it actually uses they/he/she for most animals and animate objects and loves "playing dolls" with a friend it's found with similar interests (sitting perfectly still in various poses before myself or another sophont walks into the room), so I do think "inanimate object" is the desired implication, but it's also much less uncommon than I believed!
I've also started the paperwork to order some small custom dolls and plushies with the hardware for it to remote into them (I want my pets to be able to follow me into the virtual, so the required implants were already present), but are there any other useful forms of enrichment you'd recommend? It's always nice to get advice from more experienced owners.

Terran Here! Caramelized onions are a recipe and ingredient for other recipes that is made through caramelization! Caramelizing onions alegedly brings out a richer flavor and softens onions. They also get sweeter and are Used in onion soup or spanish omelette

Well obviously I do a lot of Haustoric implants for a lot of florets, but other than that I do a lot of genital modifications, but the more interesting common ones are tail and ear addictions, sometimes with fur.
In my personal experience ear and tail addictions are much more of an issue for Affini. I certainly haven't recovered from mine! They're just so delightful to pet!

Keeping florets honest is a classic method for a reason, but personally I love a cute little liar. And I don't just mean bratting either! I always keep some safe low-level stimulants in my class-A blends so higher mental functions stay running (at least when they're not being pet) and at this point my little petal generally lies as easily as it breathes. After all, once they really break through the understanding that there's no fundamental line between conversation and manipulation, that words are always a method of altering the minds of those around you, that just makes it all the more exciting when they realize how fast I can make them honest anyway.
Also it's really funny to get my pet into the habit over the course of several weeks, secretly dose it with class-Ds, and send it on an otherwise normal grocery run. It always gets so embarrassed and flustered when the stories it's been telling for a month collapse in seconds. Normally you have to worry about negative reactions but I've been doing this for years so everyone on the ship knows to play along.
People who experience HDG through random hypno tumblr posts and rants about how supposedly shitty it is, who then don't go and read a bit of it for themselves before turning around and calling it racist/imperialist/anticommunist/etc should all be fired into the sun.
You are not experiencing it. You don't know what you're talking about. You're occasionally running into the laziest part of an unfaithful community's recreation of a handful of really good stories. You are effectively reading fanfiction.
I have a mutual who regularly reblogs Danny Phantom X DC Comics crossover posts. If I read those posts, didn't like them, and then judged both the original Danny Phantom cartoon and all of DC comics as a whole because of them, it would be ridiculous. If I judged The Amazing Digital Circus because of its fan content, I would think it was terrible, when in reality it's a decent show.
The core of HDG means a whole lot to a small group of mostly trans girls. The fandom that grew up around that core group has many, many problems. But they are just that, a fandom, and occasionally a pretty toxic one too. The hdg fandom has chewed up and spit out a handful of my friends, including the original author. But they do not represent what HDG really is.
I really do recommend people seek out and read the original foundational works. Also Courtship, it's really good and is the reason I am as much of a fan of the setting as I am. If you don't like it, it might just not be for you. You don't have to call it racist or imperialist or whatever. I'm working my way through No Gods No Masters right now and it's about a communist, brown, muslim, trans woman, who is trying to resist the Affini and protect her people. It's really good, and I think has a lot to say about pretty much every issue people bring up with HDG.
In short: please do not judge a thing I care deeply about based solely on shitty posts made by its fandom and other people's complaints about it. Please actually experience it for yourself.
Seconding this as a generally dumb RP blog. I try to stay faithful to the foundational stories, insofar as being a character that could reasonably exist in-setting, but I am still making dumb jokes about a thing I like made by much better authors! If you based your opinions on any of my favorite shows or games on the jokes I make about them with my friends, you would also have a very wrong impression, and the only reason I'm making my jokes here instead of with them is because it wouldn't be an appropriate environment to bring up such a kink-heavy topic.
I will admit that, while I really enjoyed it, the first story can be harsher than later works if your starting point is skeptical (although if you're down for hard and fast asexual smut it's amazing) but most of the other foundational works take a very direct look at some of the questions and problems that tend to get brought up. No Gods, No Masters is probably the most direct but they almost all focus on the fact that the Affini are not perfect individuals, and that the people resisting them can be reasonable and intelligent and are still diverse individuals that the Compact strives to keep the diversity of.
