binge watched westworld last week

Three of his friends jump and look around. Glinda doesn’t raise her head from her folded arms; only groans, “Is that Baines coming to do me in?” 

Charlie totters to the window and fetches Errol from the window pane. “No such luck,” he says. “You’re still going to have to take the exam.” After some consideration, Charlie lays him on a clear patch of floor to recover. “Do owls take firewhiskey?” he asks the room at large. 

“It’s not fair,” Glinda wails into the tabletop. “I swear he didn’t say anything about Bridgewort’s handling practices when we did the review in class.” 

“Oh, Merlin,” says Ali, freezing over their notes like a Medusa wyvern had bitten them. “Oh, Merlin’s sweet saggy socks. Is he covering Bridgewort?” 

“That’s what he said when I went to his office hours.” Glinda sits up. “You know his lapdragon singed my new sweater?!” 

Charlie decides not to give Errol a nip of whiskey. Flying under the influence is really not done. He unties the letter from Errol’s leg. Ron’s childish spiky handwriting spells out Charlie’s name on the front. Inside is a hastily scrawled message. 

“Yes, we know it ruined your sweater,” snaps Ysabelle. “You told us twenty times. Why didn’t you tell us Baines told you we’re going to be tested on Bridgewort?” 

“I meant to,” says Glinda. “Sorry.” She flicks her pile of notes. “I was lost in the miasma of gloom and desperation.” 

Ali puts their head back and groans. “I’m gonna die. I’m gonna say ‘fuck it’ and just fucking walk into a dragon’s mouth so I don’t have to do this.” 

“Hey,” says Charlie. They don’t hear him. 

“How much is this worth again?” Glinda asks her bottle of butterbeer. 

“Twenty-five percent,” Ali and Ysabelle chorus. Ysabelle adds, “and the thesis is fifty percent of our total grade.” 

“Hey!” Charlie repeats. They look at him. He waves Ron’s letter. “My littlest brother at Hogwarts has an illegal dragon he needs to get off campus. Anybody up for a midnight flight?”

Oooo, this is such an excellent question! Hmm.

I think Ben would do very traditional cursive calligraphy (copperplate) because 1) he would have the resources to buy the expensive pen necessary for it, 2) copperplate cursive gives you a lot of power in doing extra, super dramatic flourishes (hey! doesn’t that sound like the Skywalkers), 3) and it ends up looking SUPER pretty!

I’ve never been able to do proper copperplate because I don’t have the right pen for it, but this is something close to it (taken from the calligraphy I did for a poem from @avidvampirehunter‘s Glory’s Fray):

However, after seeing the calligraphy kit as indicated by the visual dictionary, I’m more inclined to believe he does a lot of more Eastern-style calligraphy with those brushes - long a tradition of both a master swordsman and typographer.

Big brushes like that aren’t as great for English calligraphy, so what else is there? Famously, there’s Aurebesh in Star Wars, what most people think of as the “Star Wars font:”

This angular style of type is about as calligraphy-unfriendly as one can imagine. And trust me - I’ve tried.

My suspicion is that Ben would do calligraphy in Corellian - specifically because of this comment from one of the TLJ books:

I mean, COME ON. Why else would he make this SPECIFIC REQUEST if not to connect it the WEIRDLY SPECIFIC CALLIGRAPHY SET?

So I’ve played with that alphabet a bit, and indeed it does lend itself well to calligraphy. I might go and make a proper font out of this, since I’m doing this all with vectors and I am nothing if not a typography nerd.

I thought I’d share a new series I started on my instagram (same name as here) and it’s dedicated to unusual mythology characters.

I love you all, I really do!  It’s because of you that Raven: Pirate Princess has been able to continue!  We’re prepping year 3 right now, which I feel like I should let you know starts off with a story simply titled “Date Night” where this book will straight up become a romance comic for four issues.

Here is a two page preview of the comic I made as part of the For The Love Of Monsters anthology currently fundraising on Kickstarter! It’s a monster romance anthology, which is one of my most favourite genres, and I’m so excited I got to be a part of this book!

My comic is called “(Don’t) Let Them Consume You” and is a short surreal story about love and longing and the desire to remain constant and consistent in the face of change.  Also… it’s about a big maw and lots of teeth because, look: it’s 2018 and (Marge Simpson voice) I just think they’re neat.

My comic is a Valley of the Silk Sky short story, and is extremely ridiculous. Here’s a sample page:

Paranormal entities like demons aren’t native to our reality, so I love monster designs where they look human but something’s clearly wrong: Jerky movements, fast twitching, floating off the floor, etc.

Concept: Demons who look just like humans but are clearly not:

Visually distorted even when up close.

Even if your vision is poor you can still see the demon far away even if everything else is blurred.

Shadows from the wrong light source.

Mimics your breathing and blinking.

Voice can be heard clearly no matter where the demon is.

Mouth not in sync with words. 

Somehow breathing while speaking, or not breathing at all. 

Features change every time you look away from them or blink. For example, a mole on the nose has moved to the forehead, or they’re suddenly taller/shorter than you. 

Subtle sounds like scratching an itch or cloth being rustled by movement is much louder than it should be, or makes no noise at all. 

Reflection/shadows are not matching. 

When asking other people what the demon’s doing right now, all accounts are different. 

Because demons aren’t from this world, anything they interact with becomes “wrong”. For example, doors that usually open from the outside now open from within, and ceilings being lower or much higher than physically possible.
