I’m inching out of my unexpected hiatus to tell y'all to watch HENERAL LUNA. I’ve seen it three times in the theater already. It’s phenomenal. Just, so awesome.
Great myth-making, great story-telling, with a thoughtful regard for authenticity and well-written characters. Acknowledging many aspects that popular media glaze over with respect to the narratives of the revolution: women fighting in the revolutionary army; women as medics on the battlefield; the regionalism that divides government; the self-interest that governs the actions of the elite; the very important message that, regardless of external adversity, the ultimate villain in Philippine history is ourselves, the cannibalistic way with which our revolution has unfolded.
Antonio Luna was magnificent. Emilio Aguinaldo and Apolinario Mabini, amazing. The supporting cast was stellar and, paired with the music, cinematography, and great writing, they pushed this movie into an impressive feat of story-telling.
It’s not perfect, mind. It had hiccups along the way. Awkward shots, some blips in pacing. But it evokes passion most of all, inspiring many discussions about nation and nation-building, especially in a country that claims to be post-colonial yet suffers from extant colonial structures and a political culture that disagrees with what we think (and what we say) we are.

A project originated by just-mindy, this is where you share a story you think should get more attention. I’m going to share one of my own, and one by another author.
A Wonderful Thing
'In September 1940, Sherlock Holmes is sent off to war. On the 14th, he sends his first letter of many to Molly Hooper. The two soon find that, through the art of letter writing, they can say things that they could never do so before.' This is an AU, set during the Second World War, and although it’s in epistolary form (which I’m sure isn’t everyone’s cup of tea in storytelling terms), this fic is one I’m really proud of.

'When a client inadvertently sheds new light on Molly Hooper's past, Sherlock and John are shocked to learn that her marriage to darling Tom would not have been her first.' I really like this fic because of how sweet it is, and how Sherlock and Molly are characterised. I also tend to be rather picky about resolutions to fics (especially in regards to oneshot stories), and the ending to this story is really sweet and funny too.
I don't regularly sign in anymore but when I got the notification, I had to go back here to double check. mollymatters is one of my favourite Sherlolly authors and to have her recommend one of my works is amazing! Thank you for this and I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed that piece.

I very much hope that "The Mystery of Lady X" continues at some point! The twist was divine! :) If you don't continue it, I shall content myself with re-reading it as a superb one-shot.
I hope you don't mind that I'm answering this publicly because it concerns a fic I've posted. As for The Mystery of Lady X, I might be tempted to add bits to it though I'm not very sure if it'll end up as one proper multi-chaptered fic. Might just be additional scenes meant to tempt you all to watch the film.
A/N: Plus points to anyone who can figure out what film this is based on. Admittedly, this has considerably more angst than even I anticipated.
Summary: Sherlock Holmes, brilliant as he was with words on paper, only seemed to know how to cut people down in conversations. Molly should've known better by now than to hope.

Molly could see the worried looks that Mary kept sending her way as John continued to brief the press in the opposite corner of the bookstore. Try as they might, a well-timed distraction would do little to diffuse a Sherlock Holmes tantrum if it occurred--which Molly knew it would as the man himself loomed above her. She would've huddled into the shelf behind her if this happened a year ago and she couldn't feel the same rage clawing at her throat.
"He's a talentless hack, Molly! Not even two brain cells to rub together, it's an absolute miracle he was ever published in the first place." Sherlock hissed as he stepped close enough for Molly to feel his breath on her face. "The only plausible reason Mycroft agreed to sign him is surely just to spite me. Have you read this drivel?"
Sherlock pulled out a copy of A Mayfly in Mayfair from inside his coat, well-thumbed and obviously not from the pile that Molly had helped John distribute for today's official press release. "The murderer used a bloody meat dagger to kill his victims. Did he even try to write something remotely grounded on reality or should we expect a follow-up that takes place in Sugar Fairy Mountain--"
"Stop it!" Molly swiped the book from his hands before it fell on the carpet with a dull thud. She could feel the anger quickly harden into lead that settled heavily in her chest. "Just...stop it."
She could feel the tell-tale burning behind her eyes, and some of that heavy lead turn back into anger that she now directed at herself. Sherlock Holmes, brilliant as he was with words on paper, only seemed to know how to cut people down in conversations. Molly should've known better by now than to hope.
"Tom might not be good enough for you, but he would never do this." Molly's whispered words gathered strength before she finally forced herself to make eye contact. "He also would never take someone else's story, something that took years to convince myself that it's worth sharing, and then twist it to something I can hardly recognise, all for the sake of a commercial hit.
I can't deny that I enjoyed the awards and the money, because I did. You really are the best at your job, but I see now that it was a mistake and I can't make again." Molly finally stepped back from Sherlock. "It was a mistake to trust you."
As she bent down to pick up the discarded book, Molly didn't see the way Sherlock's eyes widened and his face slackened with shock. She missed it all as she kept her gaze lowered to Tom's book and felt like all the wind was taken out of her.
"What exactly are you saying, Molly Hooper?"
"I'm saying that it's time for me to cut my losses. I'll talk to a lawyer over the weekend and have them draw up whatever is necessary to formally terminate my contract with Holmes & Holmes." Molly tried to hand him back the book but left it on a nearby shelf when Sherlock refused to take it.
"You can't--but you have a two book deal with us!"
"It's a good thing you made me a lot of money with the first one, then. I'll make sure to find a good lawyer." Molly refused to make eye contact again and set her eyes on the crowd that dispersed as John's speech came to an end. "I won't draw it out and I hope you and Mycroft can extend the same courtesy. Janine should have it on your desk first thing Monday morning."
"That's it, then? What, your lawyer with call my lawyer?"
Molly knew that he was baiting her but she wouldn't give him that. She already gave him too much.
"I guess so. Goodbye, Sherlock." She slipped past him and didn't bother to wait for a reply before she continued to where her friends stood anxiously. Molly returned the worried looks on John's and Mary's faces with a small but genuine smile, and slipped her hand into Tom's.
