In case anyone is willing to definitely say that Antonio Martin was pointing a gun at the officer in that incredibly vague video, I’d like to remind you that just a few months ago in Michigan the police spent 40 minutes attempting to persuade a white man openly carrying a rifle to place his weapon on the ground. When Elliot Rodger went on a killing spree at UCSB, he received a non fatal gunshot to the hip from the police. In the 2011 Sandy Hook shootings, Adam Lana killed 26 people and throughout the entire event law enforcement did not discharge their weapons at any point. Whether or not he had a gun, nothing warranted Antonio Martin’s death, and nothing justifies leaving his body in the streets for two hours like roadkill.

C.S Lewis never said that, and there's been some research on it its history but one of the more concrete people/writings you can source it to if you're looking for something specific is Walter M. Miller's "The Canticle for Leibowitz." Just so you can have accurate sourcing :)

Okay, no. I work at Starbucks. Do not do this to a barista. I will agree that the cup size names are a bit stupid, but IT IS NOT THE BARISTA'S FAULT. WE DID NOT MAKE THE CUP NAMES, BUT WE DO HAVE TO CALL THEM THAT. So if you do this, congratulations, you just succeeded in being a jerk to someone who makes less than $10 an hour, working very hard in a high pressure environment and trying to be kind and cordial to the hundreds of people they have to serve every day. If someone did this to me, I would probably go in the back and cry, to be honest, and the rest of my day would definitely be impacted by the suckiness of it.

Secondly, I won't say this makes it make complete sense, but when Starbucks first opened, they only had two sizes: the short and the tall. So when they added the grande and venti they kept the tall name since it was already there and had originally been the largest size. Grande is just another word for big, yeah, but Venti means 20 and it's called that because THE VENTI CUPS ARE 20 OUNCES. WOW. IMAGINE THAT. IT ACTUALLY DOES MAKE SENSE A BIT.

Bottom line: Poor barista's just trying to do their job. Let them do that and make the snide remarks later without calling anyone stupid.

So this happened at work today.

Coworker: You guys are so dramatic, not all men are evil and shit.

Me: .... I know that, intellectually. Emotionally I'm not that clear.

Cowoker: Ah?

Me: Let me put it this way. You know that if a skinny, rather short guy like you goes to jail, he's rather likely to be raped, right?

Cowoker: Yes.

Me: So let's suppose you go to jail for something rather harmless, something that harmed no one, like... ar... selling bootleg DVDs or something like that. Something that would keep you inside for a year or so.

Cowoker: Okay?

Me: So you go to jail and you know that people get raped in there. Yet you intellectually know it's impossible that all inmates are gay and sexually interested in you, it's statistically impossible. Right?

Cowoker: Right.

Me: But you'd still be scared, wouldn't you? I mean you know not all of them are out to get you, but you know some might and you can't tell who it would be. And yet you are forced to spend all your time with them, to share your space with them, and you know you might look at that ONE guy who could and would want to rape you. It would be ridiculously scary, right?

Cowoker: O__o it would.

Me: ....... well, that's how women feel every day, all the time. We know not all men are out to rape us, most would never dare do something like that, but we know there are some out there who would, gladly at that, and we can't tell them appart on sight alone. Also we feel like the short, skinny kid who did nothing really bad in jail, we know anyone can bring us down with a single punch.

Cowoker: ...... O___O

Me: ... so that girl who glares at you in the subway, she is not thinking you are a horrible man that deserves to die, she is trying to find out whether you are part of the small percentage of men out there who can and want to do her harm. You all should wear labels by the way, it would make communication so much easier.
