Somehow I knew Pop Team Epic was gonna come through with the Burger Content. And itâs an Anime Burger Time first: a manatee hamburger (a hamburger steak, that is).
The girls are back in town.

Drawn with Animation HD on my iPad. Itâs much nicer to have a big screen when sketching this stuff!
Been reading an old Preston Blair animation book I had lying around. These are two walk/run cycles I copied verbatim. Gotta love that old-school fast run with the arms out in front.

The first animation of mine based on the Real Action Pose Collection, and the first drawn in Flip-A-Clip (Android animation app). I tried speeding up the frame rate for fast motions in this one, something I've never tried before.
I got this book of reference photography for action sequences from a friend about a month ago, and I've been making some short animations based on it. I'll try to remember to post them here as I make them!
Another quick walk cycle. This guy developed a swagger as I was drawing him.
More StickDraw fun.

Since this is ostensibly the place where Iâm posting about my creative endeavors, here are seven songs I wrote and recorded over a one-week period as part of what I called a âSongwriting Sketchbook.â
The goal was to break myself of the habit of half-writing songs then giving up on them. Plus, I wanted to see what I could come up with when forced to write a song every day (I typically wait weeks/months for inspiration to strike before writing anything). It also inadvertently served as a great crash course in music recording, since I ended up experimenting with micing and mixing technique while learning how to play and record cajon and drums.
As you might expect, not all the songs are very good, and some of them are little more than rough demos or sketches, but thatâs the idea. Still, Iâm particularly fond of #3, âSummer Songâ and #7, âEvery Mistake Iâve Ever Made.â
For those of you interested in the recording details, songs 1-6 were recorded in my apartment using GarageBand, an Mbox 2 Mini, Samson C01U, Shure SM57, Taylor 110e acoustic/electric guitar, and Meinl Headliner snare cajon. The last song was recorded in my officeâs music room using the same software and interface plus a borrowed electric guitar, bass guitar, and electronic drum kit (I donât know the brands for each of those).
Pretty simple idea. I really like how this one turned out.
Sooner or later I was going to have to start doing some walk cycles (though this is more of a leap than a walk). Like the last few posts, this is made in StickDraw.
Hi, I'm in highschool and becoming a writer for animation is my dream job. Do you have any tips on how to get there?
Everyone has a different story of how they got into the industry. Â Thereâs more than one path, and itâs hard to give real specific advice. Â But hereâs some general tips:
1. Write stuff and make stuff! Â You can learn a lot from actually going through the filmmaking process and seeing how your writing translates to the screen. Â And knowing how to make ideas work in a visual context is really important in the world of animation.
So make what you can with what you got. Â Pirate Flash and make a simple cartoon, draw a comic or shoot a video on your phone - itâs all about working in a visual medium. Â When I was in high school, I couldnât figure out how to animate a film, so I just shot videos with my friends. Â By the time I got to film school, I felt like I had already learned most of the basics they were teaching the freshman year students. Â
2. Find a community! Â Finding like-minded people to collaborate with, or just share your work with, is super helpful. Â This might mean going to an art school, this might mean taking a comedy class, or just posting stuff on the internet.
Youâll bounce ideas off each other, act in one anotherâs projects, dissect obscure anime together, and just learn stuff from each other. Â Maybe one day theyâll get on a show and want to hire you, or maybe youâll get a show and want to hire them! Â Who knows!
3. Keep an open mind. Â When I was in high school, I probably wanted to live in New York City and work on SNL. Â Today, I live in Los Angeles and work at Cartoon Network on a show that didnât exist before 2012. Â
Things change, you change - donât sweat it if your life isnât going exactly as you planned or like it did for someone else. Â Just keep trying and keep doing what you like.
Number 3 is super important for anybody working toward their dream job. Youâll be happier and less prone to disappointment if youâre willing to go for stuff that appeals to your passions but isnât EXACTLY what you always dreamed youâd be doing.

More fun with StickDraw! The nice part about animating on a phone is I can come up with ideas and roughly animate them on the train between work and home. Naturally this isn't a great way to get accurate drawings, but it's quick, fun practice.Â
More animation exercises, this time with StickDraw, an animation app on Android! Again, because Iâm on a Little Witch Academia kick, I stole a motion from the second film (this is Akkoâs transformation scene near the end). Itâs really ugly because I drew it on my phone, but I was mainly concerned with capturing the way her body compresses.
