1. What's your blog title from?
My main blog, vampirethemasc, is a reference to three things; Vampire the Masquerade, I am a goth obsessed with vampires, I am transmasculine.
My D&D/BG3 sideblog, enemiesabound, is the name of a D&D spell (it was almost sickeningradiance but that was taken).
2. Latest movie? What did you think?
Project Hail Mary because my teenage niece essentially held me at gunpoint to watch it. It was quite good! Made me teary at parts. The latest movie I watched on my own volition was finally watching Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon for the first time. That was incredible and everyone should watch it at least once!
3. What are you looking forward to right now?
Autumn, in general. I always get sick of summer by the time that June is over. I do not do well with heat because I'm a shambling corpse that needs refridgeration.
4. If you could do anything at all today, what would it be?
I'm hoping to go to the bookstore in the town over because I have a psychiatrist appointment that'll take me over there. It'll depend on if I have enough time to go home and make dinner.
Tea. Earl Grey is my favorite, but I'll also take other black teas or matcha.
Wash it every other day with salicylic acid shampoo. Scalp psoriasis is the worst, I would wish it on no one. Condition with the CeraVe fragrance free conditioner. Air dry, use flat iron to flip up the ends, then hairspray into shape.
If you want to have a somewhat close idea of my current hairstyle, it's inspired by Daniel Ash from Bauhaus, but not as vertically spiked. More just a wildly messy mullet.
I used to dye it black, but developed a permanent hair dye allergy. Now it's my natural medium reddish brown. I'm also trying to grow it out into a longer shag/mullet to look a rakish Victorian poet.
7. Favorite way to travel? Is there another you want to try?
Train, hands down. However, I live in the US and train travel is incredibly limited. Amtrak, my beloved.
8. Favourite month and why?
October, the obligatory Halloween-lover's answer. The weather is perfect, the trees are gorgeous, and it's also my wedding anniversary month.
9. Favourite time of day and why?
Two possibilities. Either 6:30am or 8:00pm. I am admittedly a morning person (feel free to boo me now). I like the early morning because the day is just beginning, I have time to get things done, and I have a little bit to just relax and wake up.
Meanwhile, the evening is when most events take place so it's an exciting time of night. I'm not tired yet by that time, either, so I'm still enjoying things.
10. Do you play or follow any sports?
I was a ballet dancer into my early teens, if that counts. I still appreciate it a lot as an art. Had to stop for my joint health.
I was also born into a hockey family so I know an inordinate amount about the game. I enjoy watching a game from time to time.
11. What kind of music has been stuck in your head lately?
Saraband by Corpus Delicti keeps rolling around my head. I've also been listening to a lot of BjĂśrk lately because I bought her Greatest Hits CD and it plays in my car.
Strictly Laundry. I loathe dishes and make my spouse do them.
13. Something you learned recently?
I learned some new techniques in Procreate that I'm hoping to employ in my art! Mostly some tips on final rendering and how to use alpha locking to my advantage.
14. What would you talk about if you could give a TED talk on anything?
Probably something relating to ethnomathematics. It's the intersection of math and cultural anthropology. I am a mathematician and I did a small research project in ethnomathematics during grad school. Weaving, planting, artwork, and games all involve intricate math and I want more people to realize that.
15. Piece of advice you find yourself giving a lot?
Do the harmless things that make you happy, regardless of the opinion of others. Get the weird haircut. Wear the weird clothing. Display the weird art in your home. Literally no one's opinion on these things matter unless you let them.
16. Piece of advice you would give yourself five years ago?
Stop living for other people. It's not healthy and it's not living. If they can't love you as you are, they aren't worth loving.
Also, gender dysphoria doesn't go away if you ignore it. It especially doesn't go away if you try to swing hard in the opposing direction. It just festers.
17. Do you believe in luck and superstition? Do you carry any lucky items or follow any rituals?
To an extent. The majority of my family are of Scottish descent or from Scotland, and there's a fair bit of superstition in Celtic cultures that I grew up with. I still toss salt over my shoulder.
18. Are you musical (play any instruments, sing)? Would you ever perform for an audience?
I used to toy around with synthesizers, but it's been years. I have a middling contralto singing voice.
As I am now, no, I would not perform. Apart from maybe drunken karaoke.
19. Write, type or speak?
Speaking, actually. I love talking to people, so long as I'm not overwhelmed. Then, ironically, I become limited verbally.
20. What do you wish someone would ask you?
Anything about my writing or my characters. Even little clarifying questions and such are so delightful to me. Or especially if you relate your own writing or characters to mine. I'm always glad to discuss!
