i wonder if itās time for a cultural reappraisal of rob liefeldās art. maybe we were all just too quick to judge a guy for daring to have a unique stylized take that focused on exaggeration and action. *actually looks at some of his art again* jesus CHRIST never mind
#this is me once every like six months. he really was that bad.
This is kinda ominous ngl
Gotta compliment him on his reflexes. No hesitation. Just described exactly what he was seeing, regardless of what it was.
[VD: A weatherman is giving a report and pointing to a map, saying "feel like temperatures really take a tumble too, because after the storm-" before he is interrupted by the screen going black and then displaying a picture of some baby spinach. He says, "um," then immediately points to the screen and confidently announces, "this is baby spinach." /End VD]
Husband called me into the bedroom to show me the tag on our mattress cover, he was very proud.

i appreciate everyone on that post pointing out that being bad at computers doesn't mean you're stupid but unfortunately this is a coworker who won't stop feeding their dog york peppermint patties
the funniest part is that i agree in principle that all kinds of intelligence have value and dysfunctional processes are born of dysfunctional systems, but in practice i work with scabsy the papillon poisoner, who once tried to tank a union contract with universal $3 hourly raises because they were mad at Me Specifically for not backing them up when they said juneteenth shouldn't be a paid holiday
you may think you know why they were opposed to juneteenth as a paid holiday. but none of the other racists in the union or management had a problem with it, because saying no to a paid day off for literally any reason is fool behavior.
scabsy, however, has a specific monthly process that's due on the 19th of every month. so having a holiday on the 19th of june fucks with their due date. you might ask, wouldn't this also apply to every 19th that falls on a weekend? and you would be right. the other union members also pointed this out. and pointed out the many, many holidays that fuck with the timing on their jobs. including me, the person who regularly loses two days off a four day process for holidays i don't actually celebrate.
so while scabsy is racist, that is not why they spent an hour at my desk the next day berating me for being mean and not a team player before realizing i did not give a shit about them and switching tactics to telling management that the union was asking for too much and they should vote down the contract
#i had to call up our union rep like. hey. i don't know what the fuck to call this. but i feel like i should report it??#and the old-school ring-of-keys butch that was our rep at the time took like ten minutes to process what i was telling her#and when she did she was SO angry. she was like. i have literally never heard of a union member doing this. what the fuck.#this is when i started calling them scabsy when relating stories to internet friends#there are so many stories#their dog is named after a cardinal virtue because their spouse wouldn't let them give their child a puritan name#they do math on a print calculator and enter numbers off the receipt into excel#they once got into a longer checkout line at walmart to avoid a cashier they thought sounded gay (he was southern)#they call the dealership while at work to lease a new ford truck every 18 months#they are a landlord estranged from their liberal parents because they refused to get vaccinated#they are in at least five pyramid schemes that i am aware of

that last reblog has me musing on healthy friendships between adults and minors. iāve seen a lot of good posts about how to spot predatory behavior, but i havenāt seen many about what healthy behavior looks like.Ā & i know i have some younger people following me for various fandoms, so
signs of a healthy friendship w/ an adult:
they donāt do the obvious predatory things; they donāt send you sexual content or ask you sexual questions, they donāt tell you that you donātĀ āseemā likeĀ a minor, they donāt start inappropriate conversations
they donāt do the less obvious predatory things; they donāt ask you to keep secrets or try to isolate you from others or ask inappropriate favors or use you as a key source of emotional support*
youād be comfortable with your parents seeing your conversations (or, if you canāt trust your parents, youād be comfortable with a trusted adult seeing your conversations)
theyād be comfortable with your interactions being shown to people; they donāt ask you toĀ āhideā anything
they set clear boundaries; they tell you when theyāre not comfortable offering guidance, when theyāre uncomfortable with a conversation in general, etc.
they respect YOUR boundaries; they drop or redirect conversations when asked, they donāt ask for invasive details about trauma or your living situation, etc
you arenāt nervous about telling them when youāre uncomfortable - or at least, you arenāt more nervous than you are with anyone else. some ppl have anxiety disorders or struggle to articulate discomfort, i get it
on that note, you shouldnāt feel more anxious or nervous around them than you do around other trusted adults.Ā Ā
you donāt need to have a Reason for the nervousness - sometimes a personās intensity or conversational style is just stressful.Ā the same might happen w/ peers your age.Ā a beneficial friendship shouldnāt make you feel consistently tense/on edge, even if the other party hasnāt done anythingĀ āwrongā
(people donāt need to Commit A Transgression for you to want to stop interacting with them.Ā if theyāre not making your life better, you donāt need to keep them in your life.)
your friendship is based around mutual interests - fandoms you enjoy, creative work youāre doing, hobbies you share, etc.Ā you both have an equal interest in the things you talk about, & your conversations focus on common ground between you
youād be comfortable with them interacting with others in your life - peers your age and trusted adults.
they are respectful of you as a person; they act with appropriate awareness of your age, but they donāt condescend to you or tell you they wish you were older or treat you like an infant theyāre in charge of babysitting. basically, they arenāt an asshole.
if they are comfortable being asked for emotional support or guidance (not all adults are!), they offer advice and support from the perspective of a mentor, rather than the type of support youād expect from a peer your age.Ā theyāll also tell you when they donāt feel like they can give helpful advice (see: boundaries)
there are other healthy signs; these are just some basics
please note that it is possible for friendships to have some of these elements while still being unhealthy.Ā this is not a checklist for a Guarantee Of Healthy Dynamics And Stability.Ā it is, however, a good place to start if youāre not sure what an okay friendship with an adult looks like.
*the emotional support thing is complex: thereās nothing wrong with comforting an older friend whoās sad or grieving or having mental health struggles.Ā but you Shouldnāt be a person theyāre Relying Upon for support - they shouldnāt be leaning on you for constant help managing their feelings/struggles.
this is bc adults and adolescents tend to be in very different places where emotional processing is concerned.Ā an adult will find more helpful emotional support from other adults, similar to how you might find more relatable emotional support from your peers than from adults. itās bc of where different people are developmentally
(also, like, an 18 year old and a 17 year old are very similar developmentally.Ā a 30 year old and a 17 year old are not.Ā how much older they are makes a difference.)
an adult who depends heavily on you for support isnāt Necessarily doing so with predatory intent.Ā but they Are making the choice to ask an adolescent to be partially responsible for their emotional wellbeing.
youāll see a lot of people talk abt the trauma of being the emotional support system for their parent(s) growing up (and might have experienced it yourself); similar dynamics are at play here.
there are also codependent relationship dynamics that are unhealthy Even When both involved parties are adults.Ā some adults may purposefully look for codependent support from minors because theyāre aware you havenāt had as much life experience with setting boundaries, saying no, & recognizing unhealthy demands.Ā which is predatory; not all predatory behavior is sexual.
"Learn the fundamentals first" seems like really sound universal advice, and as a former classical musician, I can vouch for it. You will have a more solid foundation for increasing complexity if you put in the time to study in a structured way. If you don't, you'll have a lot of shit to fix later.
As a former music teacher, I can also say that "learn the fundamentals first" is the death knell for a vast percentage of beginners, especially adult learners.
I've run into this with drawing several times, where some well-meaning artist has lectured me on needing to study anatomy properly or not use shortcuts like CSP brushes. And oh, believe me, I know. I know exactly how to learn an artistic discipline in a structured way. I just...don't want to!
The thing is, I'm not aiming to be a professional artist. I want to draw my gay little anime guys. I would undoubtedly improve at art much faster if I approached every gay little anime guy drawing as a study exercise. But I would also have quit drawing a decade ago if I couldn't just let myself enjoy drawing imperfect fucked-up little guys with whatever shortcuts I needed to body myself across the finish line.
With my adult piano students, my approach was always "What's your goal?" If their goal was to learn exactly one Elton John songbook to play at parties, then...that's what we did. We'd put tape on the keys to label the notes, and just fuckin go for it. Learning exactly one Elton John songbook is a good and noble musical goal, full stop.
Some of my students needed and enjoyed a more structured approach to learning; if they wanted to be able to play classical music, then yes, scales were going to have to enter the equation at some point. And yet others would learn the Elton John songbook, catch their white whale, and realize they wanted to explore more of the ocean. The scales were still there for them to learn!
Often the choice isn't between "learn art well" and "learn art imperfectly" - the choice is between "learn art imperfectly" and "don't do art at all." To which I say, learn imperfectly! Or, what the hell, don't 'learn' art. Just do, and enjoy the doing of it.
You have official permission from your local pretentious classical music snob: fuck the fundamentals. You can always unfuck them later (but only if you want to).

More games need to let you fuck up your romance entirely. Like truly one of the funniest things that has ever happened to me in a game is Alistair dumping me because i made him king and then like an hour later i was knocking on his door like "hey by the way i need you to fuck Morrigan."
