âYour uncle isâŚLucifer Morningstar?â Duke crosses his arms and side-eyes Tim.Â
âThe nightclub owner?â Tim scrunches his nose, âHeâs not related to Constantine.âÂ
You look over at Lucifer from where you were standing next to him, all the Bats in the cave staring back in confusion. The two goats that were, of course, your teammates, just bleated nervously.Â
âWell yeah he owns a nightclub,â you hedge a little, pulling at your sweater sleeves before turning to Bruce, âDid Dad not tell you?âÂ
Bruce is eyeing Lucifer suspiciously while your uncle, bless him, (do not) was obviously enjoying himself as he smiled back at Bruce.Â
âJohn never told me he had a brother, and my research never said otherwise.â Bruce grunts out.Â
âResearch?â you raise your eyebrow and cross your arms.Â
âStalking,â Duke confirms.Â
âI just like to be prepared forââ
âI know you from somewhere,â Jason says quietly,âWeâve met before.â He stares intently at Lucifer, as if trying to remember, his eyes searching for an answer.
Your eyes slide over to him before something inside you clicks. You let out a small gasp before turning to your uncle, who is staring back at Jason with a small smile.Â
âYes, I believe we have met before. Jason Todd, if I remember correctly,â your uncle takes a small step forward, âYou were by far one of the youngest people I had seen.âÂ
You look between Jason and your uncle, a knot forming in your stomach as you understand the implications of what he was saying. You obviously didnât know much about Jason, but even sensing the latent energy of a Lazarus Pit from him, you could put together a plausible theory of what had happened that would warrant him meeting your uncle.Â
âWho are you?â Bruce asks sharply, stepping forward almost in front of Jason as if to protect him, before Lucifer stops.Â
âI told you who I was. Lucifer Morningstar,â he smiles at Bruce, as if laughing at a joke heâs the only one in on. Clearing your throat, you step up between Bruce and Lucifer, not liking the tension rising in the room.Â
âHeâs really close with my dad. Before I was born he didâŚa favor for my parents,â you look up at Lucifer who nods at you, telling you to go on, âI donât know the details, but I know that dad has fulfilled his end of the bargain many times overââÂ
âConstantine is one of my favorite one of you mortals,â your uncle cuts in, âAnd Zatanna, well, who could not like her.â He steps over to you, putting a hand on your shoulder.Â
âWhen this one was born, I was sort of integrated into the family as her uncle after our bargain. Dare I say a type of âguardian angelâ,â he laughs at this and you roll your eyes, âBut yes, Constantine and I go way back, and he is veryâŚhelpful.âÂ
âMortals?â Tim asks.Â
âYes, mortals, thatâs what you are,â Lucifer throws his hands up exasperated, âHonest to Dad I thought you guys were some of the best detectives in the world!âÂ
Your eyes slide over to Jason as he takes a step back, recognition falling across his face.Â
âI remember,â he whispers, eyes wide, âYou were there, in my dream.âÂ
Lucifer turns to Jason, slight edge of pity on his features, âUnfortunately that wasnât a dream. That was your Hell Loop,â he steps closer as Jason steps back again, âYou had so much guilt over your mother and Batman, you kept watching the clock countdown,â the room is deathly silent, listening and watching Lucifer.Â
âOne day, or night, itâs really hard to tell down there, I went to see you. I tried to bring you some comfort, as I couldnât quite figure out what you did wrong,â Lucifer sighs, âbut I assumed you âsaw the lightâ so it was, because I went to see you andâŚyou were gone.âÂ
âNow I realize that somehow, you came back. No doubt the machinations of that terribly old fellow inâwell I donât really keep up with that anymore, thatâs more Dadâs problem now and I see why.â
You hold your breath, watching Jason process the information. It was a lot to take in, honestly. Even though you had grown up around magic, and Uncle Luci, you still had a hard time wrapping your head around just how much was connected andâŚreal. You canât imagine going through what Jason had and realizing that it wasnât a dream.
Bruce is fully glaring at Lucifer now. There was nobody outside of their family, save Clark and Diana, who knew exactly what had happened to Jason. To have this stranger come in talking about it like he knew what happened, that he was there?
âYouâre the Devil,â Jason confirms, crossing his arms over his chest as he stands up a little straighter, âIt wasnât a dream?âÂ
Your uncle nods, âIâm afraid not.â He closes the distance between him and Jason slowly, as if approaching a wild animal, before putting a hand on his shoulder, gently.Â
âBut if I may, I am glad you got out.âÂ
You watch the exchange, holding your breath even more if possible. Jason looks up at Lucifer before his eyes slip to you. You let out a breath slightly and give him a small smile, nodding.Â
âThank you forâŚchecking on me down there.â He turns back to Lucifer.
âWell someone had to hurl insults at that clown.â your uncle grins, his eyes rolling with flames for a second.Â
You hear a bark of a laugh from Jason, which surprises you. You look around, taking in the shocked faces from the rest of the Bats, although Bruce looks a little skeptical. You suppose thatâs to be expected, considering how he still doesnât entirely believe in what your mom and dad can do.Â
Lucifer turns to Bruce and then back to you before clapping his hands together and walking over to the main reason he was hereâthe two goats in the middle of the room.Â
âWell, now thatâs settled, let me see what I can do about your two friends here.â You watch as your uncle steps up to the goats before crouching down. He mutters something under his breath as he taps both of them on the forehead. After a small cloud of smoke, your two teammates appear in all their former glory, looking around frantically. Ravenâs eyes land on Lucifer.Â
âShouldâve known it was yours,â she deadpans.Â
Dick looks around the room, mouth open in shock, looking between you, Lucifer, and Raven.Â
âSoâŚnobody is going to talk about the fact that the ACTUAL Devil is in our basement?â Dick gestures wildly.Â
âI donât see why we would, Todd and Constantine already covered all the bases,â Damian says.Â
Jason shrugs, looking a little better than before, âAt least I know Iâm not crazy anymore.âÂ
âJuryâs out,â Tim says. You giggle a little at that.Â
âWell now that thatâs solved, I best get back to LA, Iâm sure the detective is wondering where I popped off to,â Lucifer adjusts his cuff links, âIt was great to see you love, call me any time. Give your mom my love and tell your dad weâre still on for Thursday night.â Lucifer gives you a quick kiss on the top of your head before turning to Jason and nodding.
âStay out of trouble, but not too much,â he winks at him before raising his eyebrow and looking at you.Â
âIâm sure weâll meet again everyone, one way or another.âÂ
And with that, Lucifer is gone, just as quickly as he appeared.Â
The whole family turns to look at you.Â
You laugh nervously, âThat wasâŚmy Uncle Luci,â you pull at your sweater again, âJust be glad you didnât meet my Auntie Maze.â you shrug.Â
âThis is too much information.â Dick mumbles, rubbing his temples.Â
âThe Devil?â Tim repeats to himself, almost in a daze as he turns to Duke who is shaking his head in disbelief. Bruce just looks lost in thought, his usual scowl on his face. You, Jason, Raven, and surprisingly Damian seem the most at ease.Â
You clap your hands together awkwardly before starting to walk towards the stairs leading up in to the manor,Â
âWell, looks like everything here is settled so Iâm just going to head out,â you wave at the family, wanting to skeedaddle out of there before you get bombarded by questions you most likely didnât know the answers to.Â
âIâll walk you out,â you watch Jason walk towards you. You smile at him gratefully before you both turn and head up the stairs.Â
It was a slightly awkward silence as you guys made your way up into the manor. You werenât really sure what to say, but you just felt like you had to say something. You couldnât even begin to imagine what was going on in his head.Â
âIâm sorry,â you start before letting out a nervous laugh, âI mean sorry doesnât even begin to cover it, and is probably not what you want to hear right now, but I really am sorry. I had no idea.â you fiddle with your sweater sleeves again as you guys walk.Â
Jason looks over at you, âYou didnât know. There was no way for you to know.â You sigh.Â
âEveryone in the hero community knows, there was a Robin thatâŚdied,â You pause, eyeing him carefully, âNot everyone knows that he came back, but itâs getting out there. I shouldâve put two and two together when I felt the energy from the Lazarus Pit. I just didnât know how it worked.âÂ
Jason nods, thinking for a second before responding, âI was different when I came back. I still am, but itâs not something that you can just walk away from without a scratch,â he sighs, running his hand through his hair, âHonestly, it just feels like I at least got a little bit of closure, hearing everything from your uncle.âÂ
You smile at him, nodding, âIâm glad that he could give that to you. He really isnât as bad as history makes him out to be.âÂ
You guys get to the front door of the manor and Jason looks at you, seriously.
âHeâs not. He was telling the truth; he would come see me almost every day, or what was considered a day down there. He would talk to me, insult the Joker, and just be there,â Jason looks away, his jaw ticking, âFor a kid like me? It was enough to keep me going.â
You reach out to place a hand on his arm. He whips his head down to look at it.Â
âIf you ever need to talk about it, you can always come to me. I know we just met, but you made an impression on my uncle. That means something.âÂ
You smile up at Jason as his eyes reach yours. You can see the corners of his mouth lift a little as he nods.Â
âI guess I could. I do have a million questions about your family now though.âÂ
You let out a groan and tilt your head back, covering your face.Â
âI knew someone was going to ask. This is why I donât tell people about my family.âÂ
âSo do you tell people âgo to my uncleâs houseâ instead of âgo to Hellâ?âÂ
âNo! He lives in LA.âÂ
âThe City of Angels?âÂ
âBelieve me, the irony is not lost on us.â You sigh exasperated.Â
Jason laughs as he opens the door for you.Â
âThank you, for everything. I guess also for bringing Dick back too,â You see Jason roll his eyes, âHeâs always getting into stuff he shouldnât be.âÂ
You laugh, âIâm happy to help my friends, any time. Even if theyâve gone to Hell.â You wink at Jason. You watch him scowl, making you giggle.Â
âYeah yeah, go home little witch,â Jason says, looking at you as he smirks. You blush, mouth opening and closing. Youâd never been called something like that before. You clear your throat, and you can tell heâs trying not to laugh at your reaction.Â
âWell just call me if you need anything; to talk, reverse a spellâŚsomeone touches something they shouldnât.â Jason nods at you, giving you a genuine smile.Â
âYeah. I might just take you up on that.âÂ
You smile back.
âGood.â you turn and start walking down the driveway.
âDelphi?â You turn back around, raising your eyebrow.Â
âDo you sing âMy Uncle Went Down to Georgiaâ orââÂ
âOh my gods. Iâm leaving!âÂ
You walk down the drive before making a small portal back to the House of Mystery, listening to Jasonâs laughter before he closes the door. You smile to yourself, only two words playing in your mind as you step through the glowing door.Â
Little witch.
