Shikamaru had lived a hundred lives before anyone ever bothered to look too closely.
A problem child. A prodigy. A man with more shadows than friends.
Neighbors whispered about himâabout the late-night arguments with strangers who vanished before dawn, about lights flickering in his apartment as if something moved without him touching it, about the way he walked through the building like he owned every inch of the dim-lit halls.
He never denied any of it.
He didnât care enough to.
The apartment always smelled faintly of smoke and steel. Records of fights he never explained. A past he had no intention of justifying. A reputation built from danger, brillianceâŚand the strange cold presence that followed him everywhere.
Kageo, the whisper in his shadow, the weight behind his spine, the second heartbeat pulsing through him.
Life was simple.
No attachments.
No complications.
No softness to ruin his routine.
Until she moved in.
He hears her before he sees herâsoft footsteps, the thud of boxes, the faint rustle of someone trying to settle into a new place without attracting attention.
He almost ignores it. âAlmost.
A shadow stretches beneath his door of its own accord, curious. He tuts under his breath, tugging it back with a lazy gesture. âCalm down,â he mutters. âWeâre not stalking the neighbors.â
The shadow hums with disagreement.
Then he hears her drop something fragile, a tiny gasp following. His brow twitches. That soundâlight, startled, realâcuts through him sharper than he expects.
Hn. So the new neighbor is a girl.
He steps out into the hallway under the excuse of checking his mail, even though he never checks his damn mail. The moment he steps outside, he sees herâback to the wall, unpacking, hair falling slightly out of place as she tries to gather herself.
For a man who lived through warsâinternal and otherwiseâhe should not freeze. But he does. Not visibly. Just enough for Kageo to take notice.
Pretty.
The thought isnât his, not exactly. It sinks into him anyway.
Shikamaru leans onto the railing, posture relaxed, gaze sharp as a blade hidden behind a lazy smile.
âNew place can be troublesome,â he remarks, voice smooth, deep, deceptively calm. His eyes drag over her without shame, but moreâcalculating, interested and dangerous.
âDidnât expect anyone moving in next door,â he continues, tipping his head just enough to look casual. âEspecially someone who looks like theyâre far too soft for this building.â
A flirt or a warningâhard to tell with him.
His shadow shifts behind him, restless.
He keeps it on a tight leash.
She says somethingâsomething polite, maybe apologetic. He doesnât answer immediately, heâs too busy watching the shape of her lips move.
Shikamaru steps closer, slow and deliberate. Not enough to invade her space, but enough to let her know he could. âIf you need somethingâŚâ His eyes flick toward her boxes, then back to her face ââŚyouâre right next door.â A smirk ghosts across his mouthâsharp, dark, confident. A mask for the spark that flared in his chest the moment he saw her.
He turns slightly, pretending heâs about to head back insideâBut then he pauses, glancing over his shoulder, eyes half-lidded yet piercing.
âAnd try not to drop anything else. Iâm not in the mood to rescue a stranger.â
Before dawn, the world was quiet enough to behave. Shikamaru woke without an alarm, eyes opening to the ceiling while the city still slept. For a few seconds, he stayed stillâlistening. Pipes ticking. Distant traffic. The faint, familiar rhythm of a heartbeat next door.
He frowned. âTroublesomeâŚâ then got up before the thought could root.
The shower ran hot, steam filling the bathroom as water slid down his shoulders and chased the last remnants of sleep away. He kept his hands braced against the tile longer than necessary, head bowed, letting the heat ground him while Kageo stayed silentâ perhaps resting in the darker corners of his mind.
By the time he stepped outside, helmet on, jacket zipped, the sky was barely lightening. The motorcycle roared to life beneath him, loud enough to drown out everything else. He rode hard and fast, letting wind tear thoughts from his head, shadows clinging close instead of reaching.
Work came and went in sharp focusânumbers, systems, logic. Things that behaved if you understood them well enough. By the time evening settled in, he almost believed heâd succeeded.
Almost.
Then he opened the door to the apartment building and âthere she was. Hair a mess. Hoodie slipping off one shoulder. Arms full of a pizza box like sheâd been caught mid crime.
Shikamaru stopped. For half a heartbeat, the shadows stirredâinstinct flaring, awareness snapping tight. She looked⌠soft. Unprepared. Human in a way that tugged somewhere inconvenient.
Nonetheless, he had to shut it down. The plan was; distance and control. His expression smoothed into something cooler, eyes sharp but controlled as he pushed the door fully open.
ââŚYou look like you just lost a fight.â His voice came out a bit rough. Then a beat. His gaze flicked briefly to the pizza, then back to her face, lingering just long enough to be noticeable. Not hungryâjust assessing.
âYou alright?â he added, tone a bit casual now, like he wasnât cataloging every detail of her posture, her breathing, the way she froze when she noticed him.
âCareful,â he said lightly, eyes flicking to her feet.
âStairs donât forgive mistakes.â Then, quieterâlower, meant only for her, âEspecially when youâre half asleep.â
He straightened, letting the moment loosen before it could tighten too much, and started toward the stairs like this was just another coincidence.
But as he passed her, his voice followed, dry and unmistakably him.
Usagi had stopped dead in her tracks on the stairs when Shikamaru's figure appeared after the delivery driver had left.
Why had she stopped and not just continued up the stairs a little quicker instead? She had no answer to that question.
She was already feeling embarassed because of her falling asleep and wasting the driver's time. Then running downstairs in nothing but her underwear and a shirt, covered by a hastily thrown on hoodie that didn't really help with coverage, which only dawned on her entirely when the cold breeze of outside air fanned past her bare legs. The effort it took to keep a straight face had her almost lose the ability to form proper sentences.
And to add any more insult to injury, Shikamaru walked in just as she turned her back to the door. In any other situation she would not have minded him seeing her like this, but at least in those other situations she would have had some sort of control over it all. Hell, she would be lying if she said she hadn't thought of knocking on his door in maybe too little clothes to ask for some random thing just to see how he'd respond, but this?
This wasn't it.
"A fight?" She repeated to give her brain a second to catch up. "Yeah, with sleep. I lost."
"I'm fine.." Defeated. She had given up on embarrasment, not a single thing in the world saving her from too short shirts and hoodies and comically large pizza boxes.
"Ah, thanks. Smart.." Adjusting her grip on the box so she could peek through inbetween it and her arm she slowly took one step at a time. The steps feeling different than they did with shoes on.
At the curve of the stairs where the steps were interrupted by a small platform Shikamaru passed her, commenting on the food. It probably meant nothing, but still it gave her an opportunity to maybe lessen the percentage of bad shit of the day.
"You wanna share? They had a deal on extra large pizzas so I ordered it for two days, but if you're hungry.."
Shikamaru stopped. Not abruptly ânothing about him was abrupt âbut the moment stretched just enough to matter. He turned on the small landing, one hand resting lazily on the railing, posture relaxed in a way that was absolutely intentional.
His eyes dropped to the pizza box first. Practical. Neutral. Then, unavoidably, they lifted to her.
Bare legs. Oversized hoodie. Messy, real, caught-off-guard Usagi. For a fraction of a second, the shadows at his feet stirred.
Shikamaru swallowed the instinct down, expression cooling back into something composed âthough his gaze stayed sharp, attentive, very much alive.
âSharing?â he echoed, brows lifting faintly. âBold move. I thought you were barely standing.â
He stepped closer ânot crowding her, just enough that she could feel the warmth from him, the faint scent of smoke and night air clinging to his clothes. His voice stayed light, dry, but there was an edge beneath it.
âYou should probably sit down before gravity wins round two.â A pause. Then, quieterâmeant for her alone. ââŚBut.â
He glanced at the pizza again, then back at her, eyes flicking briefly to the stairs above as if already calculating the distance.
âI havenât eaten,â he admitted, tone casual like it didnât matter. âAnd itâd be a shame to let that deal go to waste.â
Kageo sighed in his head. Distance. You said distance.
Shikamaru ignored it. But straightened, giving her space again, slipping his hands into his pockets as if reining himself in.
âOnly if youâre sureâ he added, cool but unmistakably flirty. âI donât take pity invitations.â
Then, as he turned to head up the stairs, he tossed over his shoulder â âAnd Usagi?â
He glanced back slowly, eyes dragging over her in an unapologetic once-over before settling on her face again.
âNext time you answer the door like that,â he said mildly, voice low and infuriatingly calm âyou might want to double check what youâre wearing underneath.â
A brief pause. The corner of his mouth twitchedânot quite a smirk âWouldnât want the whole building getting ideas that should be mine alone.â
Then he turned and continued up the stairs like he hadnât just dropped that between them, shadows following obediently behind him.
Usagi had quickly given up being in her feels about the situation. The damage had been done and staying embarassed about it would only make her evening worse.
"You think I can finish this whole thing by myself? You think too highly of me." She laughed, small and quiet just for the two of them.
Pity? Thats's.. hm. "Pity invitations? Nah." Usagi turned to face him slightly. "Returning the food offer from before? Sounds more likely."
"Or maybe, I'm just a nice neighbor who likes to share food." She shrugged as she faced forward again, padding down the hallway of the old apartment building.
Her steps were just a tad quicker than his, the cold air in the hallway making her up her tempo.
When Shikamaru called out to her she turned a bit once again to listen, catching how he eyed her from the corner of her view. The blush it brought to her cheeks was impossible to hide. Especially with that last comment he added.
His alone.
It echoed in her head in ways she would not dare to admit out loud, preffering to keep those thoughts hidden fo-- or, maybe.. they were almost at their doors..
In a rush of confidense she pulled from god knows where she moved thr pizza box to one hand, staying those two steps in front of him and stretched, like she just started to really wake up after the whole ordeal and making her hoodie and shirt ride up, far enough that she was sure she gave him a nice view before she fished her key from her pocket and opened her door.
"Yours alone?" She asked, faking innocence the best she could. "I don't get it.. since you're coming over anyways, wanna explain?"
The stretch caught him off guardânot because it was exaggerated, but because it was effortless. Unthinking. Real. The hem of her hoodie lifted, her shirt riding with it just enough to expose the edge of soft fabric beneath â Dark. Cotton. Nothing dramatic.
And somehow that made it worse.
Shikamaruâs breath slowed, deliberate. His eyes followed the movement before he told them not to, taking in the brief glimpse like it was something stolen rather than offered. Heat curled low in his gutâquiet, dangerous, familiar.
His fingers flexed at his side. For half a secondâjust halfâhe imagined closing the distance. Taking the pizza box from her hand. Pressing her back against her own door while the hallway still smelled faintly of night air and delivery grease. Shadows stretching to seal the moment away from the world.
Not rough. Not hurried âjust decisive.
Mine.
The thought snapped tight enough that he exhaled through his nose, jaw setting as he reined himself back in.
He stepped closer anywayâclose enough that his voice dropped naturally, close enough that she could feel him there without him touching her.
âInnocent look doesnât suit you when youâre doing that on purpose,â he said quietly, eyes lifting to meet hers at last.
A beat. His gaze flicked âonceâ back to where the fabric had shifted, then returned to her face, sharp and intent.
âAnd if you really donât get itâ he continued, tone low, almost lazy, âthen maybe donât give me a view like that and invite me inside in the same breath.â
He leaned in just slightly, enough for the words to land where they were meant to. âBecause selfcontrol,â he added, mouth curving faintly, âis a limited resource.â
Then he straightened, giving her the space backâbut not the moment.
âAnd yeah,â he finished, eyes dark, unreadable, âIâm coming overâ
âIf you follow her inside, you do know thereâs no turning back. She will be marked and there wonât be a single thing you could do to make things go back as they used to be. Just keep that in mind â while you fuck her.â
Fumbling with her keys just a little, Usagi opened the door and stepped inside, letting Shikamaru's words settle for a moment and filing them away properly.
As if he had said nothing she simply padded over to the coffeetable and placed the box down, scooting over some pillow and moving to the kitchenette to grab two glasses and a random bottle to go with the pizza.
All with a little extra sway in her hips.
"Come, sit." Patting the spot beside her as she plopped down on the couch, Usagi opened the box and sat back. When the couch dipped under Shikamary's weight she shrugged off her hastily thrown on hoodie and leaving it over the armrest next to her.
After pouring both glasses she moved one to either side of the large pizza box took the first slice. She perked up at the first bite, humming in delight and covering her mouth with her hand as she let out a soft "holy shit." before properly chewing and swallowing. "This is good! Gotta order here more often."
It was more of a memo at herself than anything else, not expecting a reply as she happily continued eating like nothing was going on.
It didn't take long for the two of them to finish the whole pizza over simple chatter about their days, initiated by Usagi. With the last piece gone she let herself fall back against the backrest, eyes just as shamelessly as his own ealier raking over Shikamaru's figure, contemplating her next move but secretly hoping it would be him who gave in first.
The door clicked shut behind him, and something in the air shifted âsubtle, but it was there. Her space. Her scent. Warm food, soap, and that quiet hum of comfort that came from someone who hadnât learned to guard themselves yet.
The couch dipped, heat brushing heat, close enough that his arm rested along the back cushion behind her without touching her.
He watched her move around like she hadnât just wound him tight and left him there to deal with it. the sway in her hips. The way she shed the hoodie like it was nothing. How easily she existed in his line of sight.
Troublesome girl.
When she reacted to the first bite of pizza, that soft, unguarded sound, his eyes flicked to her mouth before he could stop himself. He took a slice, slower, more controlled, listening more than talking as she filled the space between them with chatter. He liked that part more than he should have.
By the time the box was empty, the apartment felt smaller âeven quieter, charged. She leaned back, finally looking at him the way heâd been looking at her all evening âopen, assessing, unafraid.
His met her gaze without blinking. Then he shifted âslow, deliberateâ one knee planting into the cushion beside her thigh as his weight angled over her. Not touchingâŚnot quite. Just close enough that the space between them felt intentional, heavy with restraint.
The shadows followed him instinctively, deepening along the floor and the wall behind the couch, framing the moment like a held breath.
His eyes moved first. They traced her the way someone inspects something precious and dangerous at the same time âstarting at her face, lingering on the curve of her neck, the rise and fall of her chest, the way sheâd relaxed back like she wasnât really aware of how exposed that made her.
Shikamaruâs gaze dipped lower, just long enough to be unmistakble, then returned to her eyes. When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet, steadyâtoo controlled for how close he was. âYou keep looking at me like thatâ he said, eyes steady âand youâre going to start something you donât understand yet.â
His gaze softened âjust a fractionâ as it traced her features , her posture, the ease she pretended not to notice.
âAnd I donât mind,â he added quietly â i told you earlier, self control is a limited resourceâ
Then, just as slowly as hed closed in, he stoppedâhovering there, giving her time to feel the weight of it. The choice. The consequence.
âSo,â he finished quietly, eyes locked on hers âare you testing me⌠or yourself?â
Usagi felt a shiver run down her spine with Shikamaru so close. So inviting in his own strange way. Goosebumps trailed up her legs but in the moment she couldn't tell wether it was from her small amount of clothing, or something else entirely.
'Something you don't understand..'
That sentence itself was something she couldn't wrap her head around already, but she wasn't going to let that hold her back.
With a smooth turn Usagi mirrored Shikamaru's movement, pulling one leg onto the couch and basically putting herself on display in front of him, leaning in close.
"With how you're staring at me like you could eat me.." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I'd say you're the one being tested."
Letting out a huffed laugh Usagi looked away and smiled, mostly at herself. A quick sip of her drink broke some of the tension. "Although I'll admit, I think we're on fairly equal grounds.."
A hand came to rest on his knee, palm warm against fabric. It stayed there, unmoving. Not with hesitation, calculation maybe. There was still a divide in her mind.
One part wanting to go for it, take the lead and just start sooner rather than later. Take what she wanted and have a good time.
The other wanting ro tease, poke and prod until something snapped and let him take over completely.
Leaning in further she let her hand slide further to the inside of his thigh, fingertips digging into muscle as her lips found the silver ring in his ear.
Shikamaruâs breath hitched once âonce, and that was the only warning she got.
Her words, the heat of her hand, the way she said his name like it already belonged to her⌠it snapped the last thread of restraint clean through.
âYeah, lets do that.â he murmured softly before closing the distance in a single, decisive movement, one hand coming up to cradle her jaw as his mouth claimed hers âhard, unhesitating, all pentup control giving way at once.
The kiss was hot and reckless, nothing careful about it âteeth grazing, breath stolen, the kind of contact that spoke of restraint finally abandoned. He kissed her like heâd been holding back for far too long, like the act itself was a release of pressure heâd barely managed to contain.
He knew he couldnât lose control, she wouldnât be able to handle it, but right now what he needed was her and all that she could offer.
His other hand slid to her waist, fingers digging in as if to anchor himself, pulling her closer until there was no space left to question. His thumb brushed her cheek, then her lower lip, slow contrast to the way his mouth moved âpossessive, hungry, yet maddeningly precise.
His shadows answered immediately as well.
They surged outward from him like living things, spilling across the walls and ceiling, stretching and twisting as his control thinned. The lights flickered âonce, twice âuntil one lamp shattered with a sharp crack. glass raining softly onto the floor. Another followed, then another, plunging the room into darkness save fora single dim light that buzzed weakly overhead.
Shikamaru broke the kiss just enough to breathe against her mouth, forehead resting briefly against hers, eyes dark and burning.
âthisââ he said lowly, voice rough â âis what happens when you invite a demon to stop pretending.â
His hand slid up her back, firm and possessive, shadows curling around the couch legs like they meant to keep her exactly where she was.
âAnd if you tell me to stop,â he added, gaze locked on hers, intense but unmistakably giving her the choice, â I will.â
A beat. Heavy. Electric.
âBut donât.â he finished quietly before his mouth crushed into hers once more.
Shikamaru's swift movements overtook her in the best way, a gasp leaving her lips at the initial brush of their lips.
She kissed him back like it was second nature, every thought gone out the window as she dragged her tongue over his lips. They fit perfectly together, Usagi quietly moaned into his mouth at the rough squeeze of his hand and letting her own wander Shikamaru's body.
One hand found his nape, fingers curling into his hair as the other snuck to the hollow of his back, pressing him further against him. Her need to be overwhelmed by his presence overtook her entire being.
When the lights flickered she blamed it on the age of the building. The snapping light bulbs? Not so much. A power surfe maybe. But the glass wasn't in the way, it'd stay put and be a problem for after they were done.
"A demon, huh?" Her voice was low, her tone one of interest. "Where are you hiding your horns, pretty?" The hand at his nape moved further up, tugging at the tie holding Shikamu's hair back. "Or, a tail maybe?" Her other hand trailed down his spine, sneaking undernwath the waistband of his trousers just the smallest bit.
"I'd be a fool to make you stop now that you're here." For a short moment her tone was more serious, less flirty and fun. Clear to anyone that she meant what she said.
The second that sentence was done, so was the serious moment. Her hips pressing against his, legs moving to pull him even closer and a hand pushing his shirt further . Not a single plan to let him go anytime soon.
He answered by kissing her again âharder, deeper âone hand sliding up to cradle the back of her head as he tilted her chin just enough to take control of the angle. His mouth moved against hers with a deliberate intensity, like he was memorizing the way she responded to him, every breath, every sound she made. Her soft little moans. Fuck, he could feel himself reacting to it.
When he finally broke the kiss, it wasnât to pull away.
His lips traced down her jaw instead, slow and unhurried, pressing open-mouthed kisses along her throat. He lingered there, teeth grazing just enough to make it sting pleasantly before soothing it with his mouth. A quiet, possessive sound left him âlow in his chest, restrained but dangerous.
âCareful, beautiful. â he murmured against her skin, voice rough. â you keep asking questions youre not ready for the answers toâ
âYet again, the shadows answered for him.
They spilled across the floor like ink, creeping up the legs of the couch, climbing the walls. Soft at first âalmost curiousâ as they brushed along her legs, her thighs, her waist. Not restraining. Exploring. Reacting to her warmth the same way his body did.
Shikamaruâs hand slid to her hips as he hooked a finger to the hem of her underwear âteasingly pulling at itâ, thumb brushing slowly along her side as his mouth continued its descent âkisses turning into brief, controlled bites that made his intent unmistakable without rushing anything. Every movement was deliberate, like he was savoring the loss of control instead of drowning in it.
The last remaining lamp flickered violently, dimming further as the shadows thickened, curling behind her like a living backdrop.
Shikamaru pulled back then. Not away from her ânever thatâ but far enough to straightn, hands lifting to the hem of his shirt. For a brief second he held her gaze, eyes dark, searching, as if silently checking whether she was still choosing this.
Then he tugged the fabric up and over his head.
The shirt hit the floor forgotten.
Lean muscle stretched across his frame âstrong without bulk, every line defined by control rather than brute force. His shoulders rolled once, tension settling there like it lived in his bones. Across his torso, shadows clung unnaturally close, forming dark, tendril like markings that traced over his abs and along his ribs, like living tattoos that shifted subtly with each breath.
His gaze dipped briefly to her top and underwear, then returned to her face âasking without pressure, without force.
âTake them off, beautiful. I want to make sure youâre still fine with this, becauseâŚâ a short pause, smirk playing on his lips. â âbecause once I make you mine, I promise things wont be the same for you again.â
Usagi got a moment to breathe once Shikamaru's mouth left hers and trailed down. Down her jaw, her throat.
She turned her head to give him better acces, letting out soft pleased noises at every touch. Each nip and bite earned him a quiet moan, a tug on his hair now free from its tie.
The hand against the back of her head, the other trailing down her body, it all felt addicting. With her eyes closed and head rolled to the side she swore she felt him everywhere.
And, gods, she wanted more.
Those lights be damned. All she currenltly had eyes for was the man above her, who's lips left a trail of fire and who's hands found every perfect spot to paw and squeeze at.
"hmhm.. Don't care about answers right now." She breathed, accentuating the words with nails dragging across his back as another shiver ran across hers.
At the loss of contact Usagi's hands dropped to her sides, her heas turning and eyes opening to see Shikamaru sit up. Her thighs trapped under his as he tugged off his shirt, tossing it aside and revealing ink swirling on skin. Thick like vines accentuating every cut and curve, so hypnotizing how they seemed to move with every pull of muscle as his hands came to rest at his side.
"Huh." She mused as she raked her eyes all over him, following the curves of black before settling on his eyes. "You got great taste in decorations."
Leaning up on her shoulders she agreed, moving just enough to properly take off her shirt, leaving her in just panties and a thin sports bra that truly hid nothing. With a look in his eyes it was clear Shikamaru was waiting for her to continue.
With her shirt gone Usagi's hands found the edge of her bra, ready to tug it off-- 'huh?' She swore the inked tendril over his left side followed the line of his hipbone jusf now. ..or didn't it?
She ignored her thoughts for now, confinuing to pull the small bit of fabric up and off her chest causing the slightest jiggle as the garment met her shirt on the floor. The smallest bout of self conciousness took over as she laid exposed before him.
Tiny bits of metal adorned her chest, two barbels sitting neatly aligned along her nipples, ready to be toyed with.
But first she had to take off her panties, still. Fingers hooking into the sides and pulling them down with the subtle lift of her hips. It was less graceful than functional and along with the rest of her already scarce amount of clothes, her panties ennded on the floor as well.
Her smile that started out so teasing now turned shy once again. "Come on. I'm fine."
Unholy shit! The sight before him was incredibly âhot!! The way she obeyed and trusted him without hesitation was enough to make his pants feel tighter. So this time âShikamaru didnât hesitate.
The moment her last words left her lips, he was on her again âmouth claiming hers with a hunger that had sharpened rather than dulled.
One hand slid into her hair, fingers curling tight as he held her exactly where he wanted, the other braced beside her shoulder to keep her grounded beneath him.
The shadows surged in response, as aggressive as his lips were. They crept slowly along her tighs, her hips, the small of her waist âuntil reaching the silky softness of her protruding chest. They curled closer, thicker now âno longer curious, but possessive.
He broke the kiss only to press his forehead to hers, breath warm and uneven. His eyes set on hers âStop me, if it hurts.â he murmured, and without waiting for an answer, a shadowy hand shot out, pinning her wrists above her head âfirm, unyielding, anchoring her in placeâ while another set slid beneath her, claiming her bum with a possessive squeeze. Just enough pressure to make it clear she wasnât the one setting the pace anymore.
Shikamaruâs mouth traced down again, âwet kisses growing heavier as he traced his way from her jawline to the crook of her neck and reaching lower and lower. When he reached his desired location, he paused, warm breath against her skin. The faint glint of metal catching his attention âand something dark flickered in his eyes. Gently he cupped the undercup of her boob and pushed it up âhis thumb rubbing her pierced nipple as a devilish smirk displayed on his lips. âSo youâre not as shy as you appear to be, huh Usagi?â Then without hesitation, he tentatively gave it a light pinch and rubbed around it softly, causing her nipple to erect. âBold and dangerous.â
Without giving it much thought âhis lips brushed over her pierced nipple, lingering there for a second then without much hesitation âhe ran the tip of his tongue around it, circling and playing a bit before giving it a long slow lick and sucking it into his mouth âreverent and hungry all at once, teeth grazing just enough to make her shiver.
His other hand didnât stay idle, however. While his mouth held her attention, his free hand slid up her side and settled over her left breast, warm and deliberate. His thumb brushed slowly, experimentally, as if he were learning her reactions one by one ânot rushed. Not careless. Just enough pressure to make her arch beneath him.
A quiet, pleased sound slipped from him âlow, amusedâ he enjoyed how responsive she was to the smallest changes in his touch. His grip tightened slightly, then eased, a measured rhythm that made it clear he was aware of how much strength he was using.
He lingered there, hand and mouth working in unspoken coordination, his restraint stretched thin âbut never broken. At least not yet.
Once Shikamaru's mouth found hers again Usagi let out a moan against them, lips slotting together perfectly.
Tongues tangling made heat spread though her entire body, soft breathy noises sounding every time their mouths disconnected.
His hand in her hair, against her shoulder. Her thigh, hip, her waist. She felt him everywhere and squirmed against his him while his touch moved further up to her chest. The squeeze felt strange but welcoming.
She kept her eyes on his as he spoke, curious about what he meant and getting caught completely off guard as her hands were grasped and held down by-- a shadow??
"What theâ" She jerked against the restraint, not getting even the slightest bit of movement. Another something grabbed her ass, making her gasp and jerk her hips up against his, feeling how all of this turned him on.
She could still see his arms in the corners of her vision, so once Shikamaru moved down to kiss and lap at her throat she stared, finding his supposed tattoos curling around his frame and materializing into solid shadows holding her in place, along with multiple tendrils running over her skin as if they tried to remember her shape.
'Holy shit..'
When she moved in she did not expect to end up like this with her neighbor. Let alone a neighbor that wasn't even human.
She should be scared. Terrified even, but..
Usagi's heartbeat picked up as he murmured right against her perk nipple, partly from the discovery but definitely also from how good he was making her feel with his hand and mouth now on her chest like his one purpose was to please her.
With her hands tied by the shadows, she moved her leg to paw at the waistband of Shikamaru's trousers with her foot and press his hips against her own.
"Off, please." Her voice was whiny, almost begging. "Don't wanna be the only one naked."
Shikamaru didnât answer right away. Instead, his eyes darkened, something distinctly inhuman flickering there as his hands settled on her hips âwarm, sure, possessive. Shadows stirred at his feet, curling lazily as if answering his mood.
He guided her closer, coaxing her legs up until she straddled his hips, steadying her like heâd planned it all along. âSo impatient, arenât we?â He teased before standing with her effortlessly, one arm firm at her back, the other sliding along her thigh as the shadows traced her silhouette, reverent and claiming all at once. His lips brushed her ear as he turned toward the bedroom âYou fit there a little too wellâ he added, cocky amusement threading through the words.
And the air felt heavier with every step, his presence wrapping around her just as much as the shadows did. When they reached her bed,he lowered her onto it ânot gently, not cruelly âjust decisively, like this was where she was always meant to end up. The mattress dipped beneath her, shadows curling along the edges of the room, framing her instead of restraining. It was pretty clear he was enjoying every second of her anticipation.
shikamaru straightened slowly, gaze never leaving hers as his fingers reached for his belt, tugging it free with an unhurried pull. The soft clink of metal sounded louder than it shouldâve been in the quiet room. He let the leather slide through his hands slowly, deliberately, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. âYou knowâ he drawled, voice low and teasing âmost people at least pretend not to stare âbut I guess thereâs something you really wanna set your eyes onâ
he set the belt aside and hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his pants, pushing them down his hips with the same lazy confidence, stepping out of them without breaking eye contact. Left in just his dark boxers, his arousal was more than evident. Shikamaru simply straightened and rolled his shoulders once, completely at ease with her attention. âStill comfortable?â he asked softly, amusement and something possessive threading through his tone.
When instead of moving away Shikamaru moved closer, Usagi felt just a tad confused. His body and shadows enveloped her and before she realised he had picked her up, on his way to her bedroom.
Being plopped down like she weighed nothing sent a jolt of arousal through her. Scooting backwards on the bed she got comfortable, watching Shikamaru undo his belt with a level of casualness that had no reason to be as hot as it was.
The shadows clinging to him no longer hid. Neither did the ones surrounding him. Every single item in the room that could cast a shadow did so in a warped, eery way that was almost hypnotic.
"How can I not stare when you're being so inviting? It's almost impossible to look away." She raked her eyes over his body as she leaned back on her hands, pushing her chest forward in the process. Deep down there was a hint of fear making it difficult to look away, but curiosity and especially arousal overshadowed that fear.
Her eyes trailed from his loose hair, now messy from Usagi's fingers, down his arms and his hands that worked open his pants. Fingers curled around the waistband and tugged down slowly, first revealing the edge of dark boxers that had Usagi rub her legs together in anticipation.
With her eyes on the area of movement she licked her lips once Shikamaru's pants were fully off, her legs still bent at the knees falling open and fully exposing herself to him.
Shikamaru licked his lips once, a small, absent gesture that made his intent painfully clear.
âThat confidence,â he murmured, voice low as he started toward her, unhurried, deliberate. His gaze never left her face, dark with something hungry and approving. âDangerous thing to show me.â
The shadows followed him as he moved, stretching, sliding, reacting to her like they were drawn by instinct. By the time he reached the edge of the bed, they were already there âcurling around her wrists and lifting her arms gently but firmly above her head, pinning her in place once more.
He set himself between her open legs and his hands slid immediately down her body with intent, fingers firm on her waist now, claiming rather than asking. He pressed his palm to her stomach, holding her still. The shadows tightening in response, binding her wrists higher, spreading her just enough to make the message unmistakable.
âYou feel how close you are to crossing something?â he asked softly, dangerously. âOnce you do⌠I donât let go.â
His fingers traced down the center of her body âher ribs, her stomach, the subtle rise and fall of her breath reacting to every inch he claimed âhis touch wasnt rushed.it was exploratory, like he was learning her by feel alone. The shadows responded to his mood, crawling over her skin like living ink, lingering where his hands had been, tracing her shape as if marking his territory.
âDemonâs ruleâ he continued, his hand then dipping lower, hovering just at the inside of her thigh, âI donât take what isnât offered. But once itâs offered?â he paused. Long enough for anticipation to coil tight âlong enough for her to feel the heat near her core without him touching it yet.
The way Shikamaru's shadows curled around her wrists and positioned her exactly to his prefference should have been alarming in any other time, have her try to run and leave as fast as possible. Being at the mercy of someone who held shadows under his control should be considered dangerous by whoever crossed them.
Before meeting Shikamaru she wouldn't have believed someone like him even exsisted, but now Usagi couldn't help but lean into their every shadow's touch like she was starving, craving them like her life depended on it.
She squirmed against every point of contact, watching him tower over her and showing off his inhuman qualities.. Fuck, it turned her on so bad..
His touch was warm. There wasn't a single doubt in her mind anymore. Her curiosity had won by a landslide and she wasn't backing out now.
She wanted this. Him.
"You keep talking like I'm supposed to expect something big.." Biting her lip she paused to rake her eyes over him again, stopping right where his boxers still covered him. "Makes me only more excited, and a little impatient."
Her tone was teasing. With her hands bound and legs spread around where he sat she couldn't do much more than taunt and beg. Beg for those fingers lingering at her thigh to move closer to where she needed them. For those shadows toâ toâ She let out a soft whine at the thought..
"How I'm laying here, looks to me like I'm offering you all of me.."
She wanted to beg for those boxers that already showed her a lot to be gone and show her more.
Shikamaruâs mouth curved slowly into a knowing smirk. âOffering?â he echoed softly, amused. âYou have no idea what that actually means to me.â And without a second thought âhis hands moved with ease to get rid of his last piece of clothing, eyes never leaving hers until his hard-on was completely exposed. Though, he didnât give her much of a chance to react because he rapidly got a hold of her calves and with a firm and sure grip, lifted her legs with ease and drew them over his shoulders. âYou also have no idea â what having sex with me really feels like. âIt can be drainingâ He commented while grabbing the base of his cock and rubbing the head of it against the length of her wet cunt âso? still wanna know if you can take it all in?â He teased âyet the feeling of it only provoked a grunt to leave his throat âthe sensation of her juices on his tip âshitâŚthe urge to just ⌠thrust in andâŚ
ââŚalthoughâ he breathed out, restraining his need ââyou...you wonât be getting your treat yetâŚâ a beat âânot until I taste you âall of youâ
In a sudden, swift move, he released his hold on her and switched them position. She was now sprawled on the center of her bed with him between her legs, arms hooked around her thighs, grabbing her firmly in place as the once inked tattoes adorning his torso âwere now printed on her skin as well. Holding her, caressing her and touching every hidden corner.
All while his hands flexed at her hips, bringing her closer to his face âthumbs digging in possessively at her thighs as his lips pressed gently onto her wet core. Giving her swollen pussy kisses followed by a short lick, then a longer one which in the process; separated her bottom lips, giving him more access to taste her sweets all in one go âlost in making her feel good, lost in his own pleasure âhe ate her up, fullyâ moved his tongue up and down along her slit, discovering every sensible fold, sucking gently at her clit and without much effort he brought one of his digits near her entrance, slowly massaging before sticking it all inside. Slowly. Deliberately. Making sure she felt comfortable with it before finding a rhythm sheâd enjoyed.
Usagi's eyes stayed focussed on Shikamaru's hands as he worked off his boxers and had her mouth watering at the sight.
"Fuck, Shik- ah!" She let out a yelp as her legs were pulled up against his torso. Her gaze quickly went down to where Shikamaru gave his cock a few lazy tugs before pressing the tip against her core, rubbing her slick all over it as she whined out a long drawn "Yes please". The sounds he let slip out only turning her on more.
Shikamaru moved fast, and each time it caught her a little off guard, another squeal of being moved around with so little effort leaving her as she tugged at the shadow binds again, only getting a little bit of movement before they pulled back and held her down to Shikamaru's liking.
Along with the bindings on her wrists the other shadows carressed her body and pulled her attention for a moment untill she felt his mouth on her. Gently at the first touch but quickly getting into it drawing moans from her with each lick.
"Ah, Shikaâ" The way he had his tongue circling her clit and finger curling inside her, she hadn't felt this good in so long. Her own fingers hadn't done this nice of a job, even with her imagining they were his. The real deal was beyond her imagination.
With pressure building Usagi pushed her hips up against his face, begging. "Keep going, feels so good." Her legs moved out of reflex, trying to close them so close to the esge but with the shadows wrapped tightly around them there was no chance.
Everything about Usagi was addicting âintoxicating and he meant; everything. Her voice, her little moans. Her floralâŚor was it vanilla fragrance? and even how fucking sweet she tasted. No, he couldnât deny that from the very moment he had laid eyes on her, she had mesmerized him. Much to his dismay.
âSo without much trouble, he continued to work wonders, twisting her clitoris with his tongue, only leaving it from time to time to penetrate her with that same one. As he continued he perceived that she would cum at any timeâŚthr way her legs were shaking, her pleading sensual voiceâŚit all gave her away. He eventually added a second digit and continued at a faster pace, wanting nothing more than to make her cum on his face âyet feeling her walls clinging on to his fingers followed by her sudden louder moan⌠âhe knew she had reached her peak.
âYouâre such a bad girl, Usagi.â he murmured in a husky, playful voice.
He licked her clean before sitting up straight. His shadows no longer restraining her. The sight he was met with did not displease him in the slightest. If anything, it only drove him even more insane. There she was, his gorgeous neighbor, completely at his mercy â flushed, drenched in sweat, covered in bite marks and wet kisses everywhere, her legs spread and her pierced nipples hard, lips swollen, and her green eyes so bright they looked like emeralds. She was still trembling and letting out the most sensual sighs he had ever heard⌠And all because of him.
The curl of his fingers and his skillful tongue were making quick work of finishing her off, her walls clenching around his fingers and legs tensing against his side as heavy breaths left her lips as she came down from her high.
With her arms free Usagi stretched the limbs and leaned on her elbows to be eye to eye with Shikamaru who still sat comfortably between her legs.
She pulled up her knees, still a little shaky and sat up further, letting one hand trail over to him, palm flat against the base of his cock and fingers curling to cup his balls. Digits squeezed gently to get a proper feel before curling around his length, giving it a few tugs before leading him to lay down.
"Let me.." Above him, Usagi's voice was a whisper against his skin as she kissed down his stomach. Fingers wrapped around his cock moving in a slow rhythm, mouth trailing closer until her lips found his tip and kissed it softly. She was enjoying herself, taking the tip past her lips and easing it further down.
One hand cupped his balls, rolling and squeezing them in her palm as the other worked the base of his cock, handling everything her mouth couldn't fit.
Slowly she worked him deeper with every bob of her head, swirling her tongue around the head before taking him further in, hollowing her cheeks on every downstroke and pumping her hand in tandem with her mouth.
Soft moans left her as she worked, licking his full length as she stopped for a deep breath before going back to sucking him off. The sounds he let escape only spurring her on to please him more.
Shikamaru sucked in a slow breath âjaw tightening despite himself when she reached for his balls. Oh this girl knows what sheâs doing, he though, giving her a small knowing smirk as she pushed him down on his back. He really didnât think sheâd go through with what she was insinuating âstill, he would let her have her way if thatâs what she wanted.
âSo, youâre naughty huhâ He murmured as her lips trailed downward, warmth following every place she touched. It was⌠distracting. More than heâd expected.
His head tipped back against the surface behind him, eyes half lidded as he watched her through his lashes. He told himself to stay relaxed, to stay in control âbut his body craved her and his mind couldnt catch up. Damn it.
Then it happened. Suddenly. Unexpected. Something soft and wet touched the tip of his cock âgently, enclosingâ It kind of felt like he was actually sliding inâŚ
âhmn..shitt.â her wet lips and tongue on his cock felt unbelievably, heavenly amazing! For someone who prided himself on control, the way this girl sucked him unraveled that discipline with alarming ease.
He let one hand fall into her hair ânot to stop her, but to guide her, to keep a slow pace and be able to feel her mouth on his length.
ââŚjust like that..â he muttered, voice rough, eyes half lidded. âMhm.. Keep doing that..â
He closed his eyes before he lost himself completely.
The feeling of his dick being wrapped with her skillful tongue and then suddenly going out in the cold again, feeling that sliding sensation moving in the other direction. And then in again. Sliding. Enclosing. Warm. Wet. Tickling, hugging. Gently squeezing his member.
His fingers tightened around her hair, guiding her to go at a faster pace.
He wanted this too much. He wantedâŚâUsagiâs closeness, her warmth, the quiet confidence with which she touched him⌠it wasnât just desire curling in his chest anymore.
âOh fuckâŚâ
It was something heavier. Something that settled deep, coiling tight around his ribs like it intended to stay there.
A tingling sensation came over his cock and he knew he was soo close âyet right before cumming he pulled out away from her and instead released elsewhere. With heavy breathing he reached down and pulled her close to his chest.
Usagi hada steady rhytm going when she felt Shikamaru tense under her. Only a few strokes later he pulled her off him just before finishing, white painting her chest and his stomach.
She was pulled up against him, heavy breaths came from beside her as Shikamaru came down from his high with an arm wrapped thightly around him.
"Hm, sticky." She laughed softly as she pressed up against him, lips pressed against his neck, chest to his side and her leg hiked up over his.
With her lips against his jaw she spoke in a breathy tone. "I wouldn't have minded swallowing, you know." Her hand trailed down his stomach, resting with her fingertips along the length of his cock, tracing along the veins before lazily wrapping her hand around him to slowly stroke him.
Usagi's leg tucked tightly around his as she rubbed heeself against the side of his thigh, seadching for some friction. She wondered if she should just straddle his hips and ride him or let him breathe for a moment, gently teasing him just a bit.
Still, she felt a little impatient. "You alright, Shi-ka?" There was an inviting tone to her question, as if she had already planned to answer for him. "I eh, I really want you to fuck me."
Shikamaru moved before she could finish her sentence âthe space between them gone in a heartbeat. He crowded her back against the surface beneath her, his body hovering close enough that she could feel the heat rolling off him. Letting her know he felt it too âthat he wanted it just as much as she did.
ââŚYou have no fucking idea,â he breathed near her ear, voice rougher now, edges frayed, less careful. âHow that phrase really turns me on âmakes me wanna fuck you hard without restrictions.â
Without giving it a second thought, he positioned himself between her legs. Fingers immediately finding her pussy, giving it a few rubs just to feel, just to hear her moan âand to remind her where his attention was fixed on next.
his hand then slipped under her thigh, lifting it up ever so gently to hint that she could wrap her leg around his waist âgiving him the chance to adjust himself even better before drawing her closer.
He grabbed his dick with the head out the top of her clit, rubbing it up and down her slit to lubricate. A soft moan leaving his lips as he slightly put more pressure when at the bottom of her entrance âteasing her by just inserting the head⌠before pulling it out again.
His mouth found her neck, this time without restraint, teeth grazing skin just enough to make it sharp, make it real.
Then without further noticed, he thrusted his hips in one goâ sliding inside with ease in one strong push.
It felt more than heavenly, more than being on fireâit was welcoming and comforting, like putting something where it always belonged. Very satisfying to no endâŚ
In a swift move Usagi was pleasantly squished between the plush bed and Shikamaru's body. The contrast of hard muscle and soft blankets was already close to being overwhelming in her current state so with his breath fanning her neck and fingers sliding down to her soaked folds all the could do was let out a breathy moan at the feeling.
Her hands moved from where they sat tucked between their chests past his sides to rest at his shoulderblades as Shikamaru moved above her, her breaths heavy with anticipation.
She watched him move, eyes fixed on following his hand that moved away from between her legs up her thigh which had her mewl at the loss of contact. With his guidance she hitched her leg up, wrapping it around the side of his hip for better access.
When his hand moved back down Usagi's mouth almost watered at how Shikamaru rubbed the tip of his cock between her folds, a pleased sigh escaping her lips along with his moan. The teasing immediately was enough for her to whine at him for more.
"Shika, please.." She whined as she turned her head to give him more space to kiss and bite at her neck.
Her nails dug gently into the skin of his back while he worked, only to dig in and pull as Usagi tensed when he thrust all the way in without a warning. Her back arched and heel dug jnto his lower back to keep him still for a moment.
The way he filled her felt so good. The stretch was bordering on painful at first but quickly eased into something she could get addicted to. Her chest heaved with every breath as she let her body adjust to his size for a minute, only letting her leg simply rest against him again as a sign to start moving.
There it is. Do you feel it? That pull? the voice inside his head suddenly purred, a bit closer than before.
He ignored it âbut did feel it. Not just desire but something else. Something that fed back into him âsubtle, intoxicating. Her energy brushing against his shadows, reacting, responding. The mark between them wasnât dormant anymore.
It was active.
âYou wanted this, since the day we met. Didnât you, Usagi?â Shikamaru murmured against her lips, forehead pressing briefly against hers as he steadied his breathing. He noticed her holding him back so he wouldnât move just yet. Had he been too rough?
Yet, he could feel it âthe tension sitting right between them now. Thick. Heavy. Hot. Waiting. Soon he realized the shift in her leg indicating he could start moving, so he began a steady flow. Rocking his hips back and forth. Slow to pull out then slamming his hips to meet hers halfway again.
He pressed his mouth against her neck and kissed her, his tongue working over her sensitive skin.
âFuck, you feel so goodâ he mumbled as his fingers clenched over her thigh. It didnât take long for his thrusts to become much more intense, driven entirely by instinct, by the urge to reach pleasure and physical release. He was like a desperate beast, moving forcefully, without any gentleness at all.
Sheâs exactly where she should be. Kageo mused. The shadows around them twisted, not aggressively âbut hungrily. Curious. Like they were tasting something new. Take more, Kageo urged, voice slipping into something almost coaxing. Sheâs already open to you. Her body, her pulse⌠itâs syncing. All you have to do is stop holding back. Take all you need from her and then let me feed on her..
Shikamaruâs hands tightened at her waist instinctively ânot hurting, but anchoring. Grounding. What was Kageo playing at? Why push him now to do something he tried to avoid at first? Was heâŚ?
Shikamaru exhaled sharply through his nose, forcing himself to focus âon her weight beneath him, on the way her fingers pressed into his back, on the fact that she was still here, still choosing this.
The room around them disappeared just a bit more with every slow thrust, only leaving Usagi and Shikamaru.
And-- shadows. Moving like they were a part of them. Swaying, hypnotizing almost, if it weren't for the deliciously distracting sensation of Shikamaru's thrusts that were drawing the sweetest sounds from her.
"Ah-- hah.." Soft moans pushed past her lips with every forward motion, breath fanning the shell of his ear to the rhythm of being pressed into the plush mattress.
"hm- hmm- so- good.." She returned the statement as well as she could, the flow of words matching the movements.
Her hands roaming from shoulderblades down to the small of his back traced gentle lines over skin, pads of fingers running over subtle ups and downs of spine and ribs before tensing and nails dragging back up at a particularily harsh thrust.
"F- fuckk" Usagi's sudden tense reaction seemed to spur Shikamaru on even more, his movements more intense than before.
Usagi took everything he had to give and for a short moment felt him falter, wondering if his ever running mind distracted him with something. She decided not to speak her throughts aloud but instead press her body against him that bit more snugly, wrapping her fingers around his upper arm and shoulder.
Kisses pressed just below his ear spoke of soft reassurance without words, actions of enjoyment and pleasure clear as day.
Names mattered in the underworld, it was said that power answered to them, although, this demonâs name in particular was spoken rarely, not because his power was limited but because Echo âonly observed balance. He was the one who noticed and heard things other lowborn creatures ignored, the one who moved only when something threatened the order which kept demons from tearing each other apart.
And now something or rather someone had shifted said order. Heâd felt it immediately.
âAh ..a mortal...âhe echoed, eyes like burning hell focused not on sight, but on resonance as the mark pulsed âfaint, mortal, wrong in every way. it wasnât a full claim âbut he could sense the unstable bond forming; thin threads of connection beginning to root between the human girl and the demonâs vessel. Feeding on proximity. Feeding on emotion.
That alone was a threat. But the girl? She was the real problem.
âThree moonsâ he stated coldly and loud enough to make demons around him go still. The only thing demons feared the most was when those two simple words were spoken because it meant death to their kind. âIf the mark deepens, if the vessel hesitates and attachment takes hold âŚshe will become a threat.. but if Kageoâ the name was said only for the purpose on making said demon aware of the situation ââŚeats her soul before then, the imbalance resolves.â
His gaze hardened as he spoke once more âObserve them âher, if the third moon rises without resolution â she dies.â
â â â
Back in the quiet dimness of Usagiâs apartment, none of that had reached them. For now Shikamaruâs world had narrowed to something far smaller and far more dangerous. Her. The girl who he barely knew âyet felt a strong connection and urge to protect.
The rhythm between them slowed as evrything began to blur at the edges. Breath mingling. Movement syncing. That strange pull in his chest tightening instead of fading.
Kageo went quiet again. Waiting.
Shikamaru exhaled sharply, his forehead dropping to hers for just a second as everything peaked. For a moment, neither of them moved. The shadows stilled as fhe room softened âand for the first time since sheâd stepped into his life⌠Shikamaru felt something dangerously close to peace.
Usagiâs breathing slowed beneath him now, her warmth steady, her body relaxing into his âand that was the part that made his chest tighten. He shifted just enough to pull her closer. By now, he had lost track of time, he wasnât sure how long tbey had been like this but it was more likely that she had already fallen asleep.
Silence settled and he knew this peace he felt wasnât meant to last. ââŚKageoâ his voice was quiet. controlled. but underneath it⌠something conflicted.
Youâre going to regret this, he thought as his gaze dropped to her face âsoft, unaware, peaceful in a way she wouldnât be if she knew the truth. If she knew what sheâd just stepped into. If she knew what was already coming for her.
That was the problem. He knew. He fucking knew and she would hate him after this.
âMake her forget,â he said finally. âTonight. All of it.â
The shadows stirred. You can earase the bond from her mind, Kageo murmured. But not from her body nor from the one underneath.
âI donât need her remembering thisâ Shikamaru replied flatly. âNot yet.â
Youâre not protecting her, Kageo said softly. Youâre only delaying the inevitable.
Shikamaru didnt answer because that part was true âstill⌠his hand brushed once, briefly, against her hair âalmost gentle.
âDo it.â
The shadows obeyed. Slipping into her awareness like a dream unraveling. Not destroying the memory âjust blurring it, reshaping it into something distant. Unreal. Safe. Something she could wake up from.
By the time it was done, Shikamaru was already pulling away. He paused at the doorway, glancing back once. Just once. ââŚTroublesomeâ he muttered under his breath. But he didnât go back. Didnât stay.
And Usagi would wake up believing it had all been nothing more than a dream.
She must have forgotten to set her alarm last night when she went to bed. Even on her days off she preffered to be up on the earlier end, mornings felt like they somehow contained way more hours than they did in reality.
Ah well.
Sitting up she stretched, an audible tired groan leaving her as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Her muscles pulled in all kinds of places she hadn't felt in a long while.
She must have slept like a pretzel.
Heavy footsteps led her into the bathroom. Surely a nice hot shower would ease that soreness dnough to make it through the day.
Walking in that morning haze until her toes almost kicked the side of the tub she turned on the water and grabbed a hairbrush to detangle her scruffy birdsnest of morning hair, blankly staring at the edge of her mirrored cabinet.
Usagi let the water run down her tense body for what felt like hours. Just standing there with her eyes closed, letting the sound of the water fill her surroundings. Only a quick wash was what ended her morning shower, not feeling the need for an off day spa treatment in her groggy state.
It was only when she was drying off, wet hair leaving droplets on the bath mat in the meantime, that she noticed a bruise. A line right on her thigh.
'Huh.'
Did she run into something? Knowing her clumsy self she probably did. She just couldn't remember what it was.
What did she do yesterday? Shs studied, or, tried to study. She ..napped? Pizza. She ordered pizza, yeah.
The week after the festival felt strangely⌠quiet.
Konoha had returned to its usual rhythmâ mission reports, late afternoons swallowed by paperwork, and the endless noise of routine. Still, Shikamaru couldnât help noticing how often his thoughts drifted back to the river, to lanternlight on water, to her laugh muffled by a pink rabbit plush pressed against her chest.
Heâd told himself it was just a nice memoryâ But apparently, nice memories had a way of sticking around.
So when he spotted Usagi near the training grounds that morning âthe same place she usually cut through on her way to town âhe didnât hesitate.
His pace was steady, his voice that familiar low drawl that carried a kind of lazy authority now.
âOi. Thought Iâd have to send a search team,â he said, hands tucked loosely in his pockets, a hint of smirk playing at his lips. âDidnât think youâd disappear after winning your precious rabbit.â
He stopped beside her, gaze sharp but amused, eyes flicking briefly toward the horizon before returning to her. There was a new weight in his presence â still casual, but undeniably more deliberate, more there.
âBeen a quiet week.â
He tilted his head slightly, his tone softening just enough to let something else slip through.
âToo quiet, actually. You been avoiding me, or should I take it personal?â For a moment, he let the question hang between them âthe tease layered with something genuine.
Then, as if to ground it back in his usual cool control, he added, âIf youâve got time, walk with me. Thereâs something I wanted to ask you⌠before this week turns into another round of the same old crap.â
He didnât wait for an answer right away âjust looked at her sidelong with that sharp, calculating calm that had always made people underestimate how intentional he could be when he wanted something.
Shikamaru didnât answer right away. He just watched her walk away, the soft sound of her steps and that almost shy offer lingering in the air between them.
Troublesome. He let out a slow breath through his nose and pushed himself up from the couch, crossing the room at an unhuried pace.
âUsagi,â he called quietly, catching up to her just as she reached the corner of the hallway. His hand lifted to brace lightly against the wall beside her shoulder ânot trapping, just close âwhile his other hand settled loosely at her waist, warm and steady.
âyou really shouldnât say things like that so casually,â he murmured, voice low and lazy but softer than usual. His eyes dipped to her lips for the briefest moment before returning to her gaze. He leaned in slowly, close enough that their noses nearly brushed, breath mingling, the air turning quiet and charged with the almost of it all âthrn, at the last second, his lips shifted. Instead of her leaning in for her lips, he pressed a gentle, lingering kiss to her cheek.
âGoodnight, Usagiâ he said near her ear, thumb brushing once against her side before he leaned back just enough to look at her again, a faint smirk tugging at his mouth. âIf we share a bed tonight, weâre not sleeping ânot me atleast... and tomorrowâs already going to be a long political headache disguised as lunchâ his fingers gave her waist a light, affectionate squeeze. âI want you rested. So you can be yourself. Not a sleep deprived version running on nerves and tea.â
He stepped back then, giving her space, but his expression stayed warm. âGo sleep. Iâll be right down the hall.â A small pause followed, quiet but certain.
She watched him get up from the couch and move over, heartrate already picking up at the chance of him coming along.
His hand next to her, on her, so close again. Did he? She invited him to sleep, just sleep. The idea of moving so quickly hadn't crossed her mind at all when she offered it, but now..
He declined. In the most gentle way, with a soft kiss to her cheek andâ
'Oh.'
So he did think about it. The idea had her cheeks flushed as her breath hitched a little at the confession.
"Iâ yes, sleep. Don't wanna pass out before soup." Oh how she prayed her tone wasn't disappointed. The offer had been just that, a asual offer. But still, somewhere in the back of her mind, she had hoped..
When Shikamaru had stepped back and towards his room, Usagi timidly padded behind him and turned the oposide side to her own room for the night.
Inside she fully let herself feel the effects of the short conversation. Letting herself fall onto the bed and bury her face, now entirely red, into the pillows as she took one deep breath after the other. Even getting up to get out of her clothes felt like too much in the moment, so squirming out of them and scooping up the blanket to maneuver herself underneath it was how she ended eventually.
Under the covers with a pillow hugged to her chest, muttering her thoughts into it i an attempt to clear her mind and drift off to sleep.
âââ
The morning sun woke her up, a ray of light finding her face through the crack inbetween the curtains. With a groan she stretched, getting up and dressed to face the day.
Shikamaru woke quietly, the pale light of morning slipping through the curtains and settling across the room. For once, his first thought wasnât strategy or schedules âit was Usagi, the soft cadence of her voice from the night before, the way sheâd looked at him when things finally felt⌠clear.
He lay there longer than usual, one arm folded behind his head, considering how easily sheâd found her way into his thoughts. Troublesome, sure âbut not in a way he wanted to solve. More like somethig he wanted to keep.
He swung his legs over the side of the bed and padded out into the hall, intending to head straight for the bathroom, when he caught sight of her already up, moving about with a mug in hand. His steps slowed. âMorning,â he said quietly, voice still rough with sleep, eyes softening in a way he didnât bother hiding. There was no teasing this time âjust a small, genuine nod of acknowledgment. âDid you sleep well?â
Before the conversation could stretch or before he could overthink staying âhe tilted his head toward the bathroom. âIâll be quickâ he added, then disappeared inside, the sound of the shower starting soon after. The hot water helped clear the last fog from his head, rinsing away lingering thoughts until what remained felt simple âhis work here was done, they were heading back to Konoha tomorrow, and today was theirs. At least as much as he could make it.
When he came back out, hair damp and clothes relaxed but neat, he paused near her again. âSoâŚâ he began casually, like it had just occurred to him, âsince the meetings wrapped up faster than expectedâŚâ His eyes flicked to her over the rim of his cup. âI was thinking we could walk around a bit. Pick up some souvenirs âfigured it might be nice to bring something back to your parents that isnât paperwork or political headaches.â
A faint smirk tugged at his mouth as he added, âNo pressure. Just thought itâd be more fun to have a date before we head out to lunch.â
Usagi padded around the kitchen, from one countertop to the next and back again.
A little restless without real plan of the day she was unsure about breakfast. She needed to eat something for sure, but should she do it alone?
The water on the stove boiled and she took the kettle off the heat.
'I could have a small bite, nothing too heavy.' With her hands already halfway into the cupboard to grab a plate she passed the mugs and realized she was making tea at first. 'Yes, tea. Then food, maybe.'
Mug, set down on the counter. Water, heated. Tea. She needed tea leaves.
Steam rose from her mug on the counter, leaves coloring the water slowly as they seeped. Meanwhile Usagi still wondered about food until a voice pulled her from her thoughts.
"Ah, morning." She replied. "Slept well enough, I guess." With a shrug she moved to remove the leaves from her tea and carefully taking a sip. From behind her mug she nodded at Shikamaru before he walked off again.
Usagi leaned against the counter, mug in hand when he returned. She still hadn't decided on food, her head never settling on the right plan.
She drank the last bit of her tea while Shikamaru made offered his plans, and Usagi happily agreed. Setting her mug down she moved past him maybe a little too obviously excited.
From near the hallway she called. "You finish your tea, I'll go fix ..this." she gestured at her whole self, from messy hair to her crinkled lounge pants.
A quick rummage through her limited wardrobe and a shower later she stood at the mirror of the shared bathroom. Her still a little damp hair brushed neatly and a hairtie secured on her wrist for during lunch. It was rare for her to wear her hair entirely down, but letting it air dry outside felt like a nice change.
Yeah. The woman she saw in the mirror was one ready to go on a date.
Shikamaru watched her disappear down the hall with a faint, amused huff. Then finishing his tea before setting the mug aside. He headed into his own room, movements unhurried, more thoughtful than usual. Choosing clothes felt oddly significant now âcomfortable, practical, but not careless.
He settled on something simple that still framed him well, tying his hair back loosely before pausing at the mirror. For a brief second, he allowed himself a small smile. A date. Troublesome⌠and yet, he hadnât looked forward to anything like this in a long time.
When he stepped back into the hall, he lingered outside her door instead of knocking right away, listening to the faint sounds within. He raised his hand, hesitated âthen knocked softly, once, twice.
âUsagi,â he called, voice low and warm, deliberately gentle. âYou ready?â There was an ease in the way he said it, like this was already something familiar, something they did.
As the door opened, his gaze lifted âand stayed there. He didnât rush to speak, didnât try to mask the way his eyes softened at the sight of her.
âYeahâ he said quietly, almost to himself at first, then met her eyes again. âDefinitely ready.â He shifted slightly to offer his arm without comment, a subtle invitation rather than a question. âLetâs goâ he added, tone calm but unmistakably pleased, as if this âwalking out together was exactly where he wanted to be.
All ready Usagi stood in the doorway, a little more dressed up than usual but not too dolled up to attract attention. It was still comfortable but different.
She felt good about herself now, with how Shikamaru looked at her. And she returned that look without even thinking about it, always. Like there was something had suddenly fallen into place in her life just as she started to believe her apartment and the restaurant was all there was to her future.
"As ready as I can get, I think." She spoke softly as they walked through the hallway, her eyes lingering on him like she was afraid he'd dissapear the second she looked away.
She kept him in the corner of her vision as they both grabbed their last items before heading out the door. It was a stupid nervous habit, she knew that, but still it bothered her sometimes.
Once out the door she wondered what they could go see. There were quite some options, even without wandering too far. Shops lined streets near the tourist areas and cafĂŠs with terraces were everywhere, with or without breathtaking views of the ocean.
"Did you have something in mind already?" Usagi spoke the into the air, just wondering out loud. "Or do we wanna just wander and see?"
As they continued on the path that led from their stay to the main area of the city Usagi's steps faltered ever so little when her stomach rumbled and she let out a huff of laugher at herself.
"Okay, maybe I do have an idea myself. A small snack would be nice." She looked at Shikamaru with that awkward smile, hoping he wouldn't mind a small detour.
Shikamaru noticed the way her gaze lingered, but he didnât call it out, didnât tease her for it either. Instead, as they stepped out into the street, he adjusted his pace to match hers âand subtlety took her hand in his. Steady presence. Not disappearing. Not going anywhere.
âI was thinking weâd head toward the waterfront,â he said casually âas if he hadnât just made his status of being taken publicly. âThere are a few artisan shops near the docks. Handmade stuff. Less political, more personal.â His eyes flicked towards her briefly. Was she okay with him holding her hand like this? It was only a thought but if they had to be convincing that their relationship had been going on for long, she had to get usted to it âor rather they both had to get used to it. Sure, they had held hands before but this time it actually meant something. Now they were dating. âFigured your parents and friends might appreciate something that doesnât scream official delegation.â he added with a little laugh at yhe end.
Yet âwhen her steps faltered and her stomach betrayed her, he stopped fully this time, looking down at her with a slow, knowing expression. Then the corner of his mouth lifted.
âA snack?â he repeated, like he was weighing a serious proposal. âThatâs a pretty strategic move before souvenir shopping. Canât negotiate on an empty stomach.â
He tilted his head toward a nearby row of stalls where the scent of grilled batter and sweet syrup drifted through the air. âThereâs a vendor down that way I noticed yesterday. Smelled decent. We can make a small detour.â His tone made it clear he didnât mind in the slightest.
As they resumed walking, he nudged her lightly with his elbow. âRelax, okay?â His voice softened just a fraction. âWeâve got the whole morning to get used to this.â He gestured towards their linked hands. However, he wasnât sure if those words had truly been meant for her or for himself. Perhaps he really needed to chill out a bit more. But, was there actually something to be worried about?
Usagi agreed with Shikamaru's suggestion for food, following his gaze to where the stalls were located and spotted the ones he had meant pretty quickly. They weren't too busy yet, only a few customers getting in a pre-work bite and heading off again. She nodded at him and joined in the slow departure to the food vendor.
"I like handmade works, would love to check those out!" She spoke excitedly as they strolled along a couple other stalls selling breakfast foods, all too large for a quick bite they were looking for.
"But first, food." With a wide smile she stopped at the food stall and turned to face Shikamaru with a wide smile. The stall he had pointed out sold a variety of sweet goods, and Usagi was mostly excited to try out those waffles she saw someone walk off with.
As they waited for the few people in front of them Usagi leaned against Shikamaru's side, looking his way when speaking. "What are you thinking to get?" With a subtle point to the sales sign she mentioned her interest. "I think I'm gonna go for the waffels. But not the big fancy one. I'll just take a simple syrupy one."
The vendor behind the counter worked fast and before they knew it the kind man's voice filled in after Usagi's order plan.
"And what flavor would syrup would that be for you, miss?" She had been so distracted by what to order that she hadn't been paying attention to the line before her that had now disappeared.
At Usagi's little surprised look the man gestured at the list of options with a patient look. She took a quick look and decided on her pick. "Apricot, please."
After taking Usagi's order the man turned to Shikamaru, ready to take his order as well. To the man it was clear the two were there together. Or, that's what Usagi thought, seeing how close and chatty they were being.
Shikamaru placed his order, quick and simple as well and waited as the vendor worked. He noved across his small kitchenette like it was nothing. Everything was being done so methodically it was clear there were years of experience at work.
With their orders ready and paid for Usagi claimed a small standing table to enjoy the moment of being simple tourists with Shikamaru. No job outings or business people, just the two of them spending their morning out and about.
Shikamaru followed her, settling beside her with an easy kind of closeness that didnât feel forced anymore. One hand held his food while the other rested near hers on the tableâs edge âclose enough to reach, yet not quite touching. He leaned his hip against it, posture loose, eyes drifting over the street out of habit more than interest. Crowds, movement, patterns⌠usually heâd be reading all of it without thinking. Today, though, his attention kept circling back to her.
âGood call,â he said, glancing at her waffle, then back at her with a faint smirk. âSimpleâs usually better. Less room for disappointment.â It was a throwaway comment on the surface, but his gaze lingered a second longer than needed. Not everything needs overcomplicating. Troublesome how easily that thought applied to more than just food.
He took a bite, chewing slowly, letting the quiet stretch between them. It wasnât the awkward kind, this was⌠easy. The kind of quiet he usually only found lying in the grass watching clouds drift by. Somehow, standing here with her, it felt the same âjust with a little more warmth at his side.
His eyes shifted back to her, more focused now, studying the way she seemed to settle into moments like this ââŚYou miss Konoha?â he asked, tone casual, but softer underneath.
His gaze stayed on her, observant in that quiet, analytical way of his. Home means something different to people. For him, it was routine, responsibility âpeople heâd protect without question. For her? Maybe comfort. Maybe something she was still figuring out.
He took another bite, chewing slowly before adding, âItâs different here. slower in some ways, louder in others.â A small pause. âFigured you might be thinking about home a bit.â His fingers tapped lightly against the table once, absentminded.
The food was good. Simple, sweet and just right to start off the day.
Of course her current breakfast companion made it even better, making her morning one of late night fantasies and daydreams while reading sappy novels.
She almost missed Shikamaru's question.
"Ah, Konoha?" She repeated, more for herself than him. "I'll always miss home." Letting her last bites of food hang a little away from hwr mouth, her hand still in front of her. "I catch myself constantly comparing stuff here to how it is at home, but I guess that's normal, right?"
Usagi took a bite and stared. At the area in front of them where people sat to eat and chat. At the buildings and environment in the distance, the architecture and local designs. The large variety of people as well.
"There's surely a lot more tourism here, so louder in people is true. Good thing it's nowhere near rush hours yet, we can shop in a little more peace."
Their breakfast passed in comfort, soon both ready to move along and start their own little tourist activities.
Strolling away from the cafĂŠ area and into the shop streets the two of them walked in comfortable silence. Their hands had found one another quickly after the first few steps like it was second nature already, and the only words shared before the real shopping started were quick remarks pointing out pretty scenery or possible souvenirs in windows of still closed stores.
After the first few shops Usagi already had an entire list of things she wanted to buy from the second she laid eyes on them, but she managed to hold back and keep them in mind to perhaps come back to later. If she really bought it all she was going to need an extra suitcase..

The cafĂŠ near campus wasnât exactly his first choice of workspace, but it had decent Wi-Fi, strong coffee, and the kind of white noise that made thinking easier. Most days, Shikamaru claimed the same corner tableâhalf-hidden by a bookshelf and conveniently close to an outlet. From there, he could tune out the chatter of other students and lose himself in the glow of his laptop screen.
Heâd been working on a physics engine for his newest project, one that refused to behave the way he wanted. The cursor blinked back at him, stubborn, while his mind wandered toward the simulationâs gravity values. Everything in his code fell too fast, too heavy. Typical.
He stretched his fingers, took a slow sip of lukewarm coffee, and sighed. âTroublesomeâŚâ he muttered to himself, his usual commentary when something refused to cooperate.
That was when it happenedâthe muffled thud of a cup, a startled gasp, and the sharp chill of cold liquid splattering across his forearm.
He blinked, registering the mess. The dark stain spread across the sleeve of his hoodie, the one he wore so often it had practically molded to him. He looked up, and there she wasâwide-eyed, apologetic, and holding what remained of her drink like it might still be salvageable.
For a moment, he didnât say anything. Just studied herâher flushed cheeks, the way she looked ready to bolt, and the soft tremor of embarrassment that practically radiated off her.
He could have sighed, could have complained, but instead something about the situationâthe chaos of it, maybeâpulled the corner of his mouth upward. His voice came out calm, almost amused.
âWell,â he said at last, dragging his sleeve across the table to keep the keyboard safe. âGuess thatâs one way to break the ice.â
He leaned back slightly, eyes still on her, the faintest spark of curiosity lighting them. She wasnât part of his usual pattern. And somehow, that made her interesting already.
Shikamaru blinked once when she said it âlike the word had to land twice before his brain accepted it.
Girlfriend.
A slow exhale left him, the kind you donât realize youâve been holding for days. âYeah,â he said quietly, but there was a smile there now, small and real. âGirlfriend.â
He shifted his bag higher on his shoulder, but paused noticing something was missing. âHang on âi left my laptop under that tree.â A lazy tilt of his head back toward the path they came from. âgive me a second and donât run off.âhe jogged back, grabbed it, slung it over one shoulder again, and fell back into step beside her like it was the most natural thing in the world.
The walk to her dorm was quieter this time ânot heavy, not even awkward. Just⌠settled. Their shoulders brushed now and then. Neigther moved away. When they reached her door, he stopped with her, hands in his pockets, rocking back slightly on his heels. âText me when youâre insideâ he said automatically, then huffed. âActually, no. Iâll just stand here two seconds and make sure.â
His eyes softened. âCâmere.â He leaned in, slower than before âgiving her time, giving her space to meet him halfway. His hand came up lightly to her jaw, thumb warm against her cheek as he kissed her. a soft delicate kiss sealing that they were officially dating. When he pulled back, his forehead rested briefly against hers. âGoodnight⌠girlfriendâ he murmured, a little amused at how the word still felt new in his mouth.
Then he stepped back, gave her one last look like he was memorizing the moment, and turned to head home.
That night, staring at the ceiling in his bed, he replayed everything. Where he hesitated. Where he assumed. Where he stepped back instead of forward. âTroublesomeâŚâ he muttered to the dark. He wasnât good at big emotional gestures. But he was good at building things.
Fixing things.
His eyes shifted toward his laptop on the desk.
Iâll make it up to her, he thought. Not with apologies âbut with something that shows her that Iâve been paying attention all along.
â â â
Classroom noise blurred into the background the next day as Shikamaru sat in the back row, notebook open but not a single lecture note written.
Instead, his notes consisted on the following:
Game working tittle: Shadow path Bunnyâs Shadow
A shadow entity âquiet, strategic, always watching from a distance. A bunny girl âbright, stubborn, soft but stronger than she looks.
Goal: Solve environmental puzzles and coded riddles to get closer to her world.
Collectible system: Coins to buy her carrots⌠Carrots scattered through each level to unlock encrypted memory fragments like hidden dialogue, backstory, emotional checkpointsâŚ
Core mechanic: The shadow demon cant touch the bunny at first. must learn timing, patience, trust. Too much force means she gets hurt runs. Too much distance and she dies fades.
Final level note he scribbled in the margin and highlighted it
The player only wins if he stops calculating and chooses to step forward.
His pen paused. Then, smaller underneath:
Characterâs name: Usagi.
A faint smile pulled at his mouth as he closed the notebook just as the professor called on him.
Usagi watched Shikamaru run off to fetch his laptop and couldn't help but laugh at the fumbling. Him and emotions really made chaos. But it was good chaos. One she wouldn't mind getting used to.
When he returned she still had a little giggle in her voice. "Was I so distracting you even forgot your precious laptop?" Some words to ease the situation more than something she expected an answer to.
Truthfully?
She had been distracting. Wether that was good distracting in the end or honestly very bad distracting at first.
Right now he was being distracting. Without even doing anything. Just him, walking next to her and holding the title of 'boyfriend' now was enough to have her wordlessly walking to her dorm.
At her door she came somewhat back to earth, but only enough to respond to Shikamaru, and gently kiss him back when he leaned in. No harsh spilling of thruts now, only soft confirmations of feelings shares between partners. "sleep well, boyfriend."
Oh yeah, those words felt new. Good, but new.
The second she was through the door and had it clicked shut behind her she couldn't keep her smile away, giddy and bubbly as she put her items at the side table and made her way to her room where she burrowed among pillows and blankets, the pinkest, fluffiest rabbit snug in her arms as she let today's events replay until she fell asleep.
âââ
Her morning ritual wasn't any different than usual. Neither was her breakfast with Hinata, besides her obviously better mood that almost raised questions, but Usagi's dear friend didn't ask.
Classes went by in a breeze as well. Her horrid teammembers no longer weighing down on her so much and her work was edited without drama whenever her teammates once again disagreed.
It was by the end of the day, walking down the hallway that she found herself daydreaming. Her mind wandered to cute cafetaria dates and lovey-dovey scenarios that had her shiver.
'Jesus, 'sagi. What's wrong with you?'
Normally she'd gag and frown at those couples who'd do nothing but hog each others' space and drool all over one another. And yet now she was the one thinking of doing all that stuff herself? Yuck.
She quickly waved the thoughts away and instead sent a quick text.
A simple one that said 'I think of you' without being too clingy or overwhelming.
Shikamaru packed up at the end of class with the same unhurried movements he always had, but the laziness was surface level at best. His mind was somewhere else entirely, looping around through soft moments, quiet confessions, and the strange, light feeling sitting in his chest that made everything else seem a little less heavy. It showed in the way his attention drifted, in the half second delay in his reactions âenough that he didnât notice Asuma stepping into his path until he walked straight into him.
The collision jolted him back into the present. âWell, look whoâs using his eyes as decoration.â Asuma said dryly, steadying him with an easy hand on his shoulder, studying him with the kind of look only a teacher whoâd known him for years could give âsharp, amused, and immediately suspicious. âYou usually only drift like that during shogi or coding.â
Shikamaru recovered quickly, but not enough to hide that something had shifted. He wasnât weighed down in his usual way; there was a quiet charge to him, a distraction that didnât come from boredom but from preoccupation.
As they fell into step near the doorway, the conversation turned toward work âspecifically, a project Shikamaru had taken on outside of class.
He rubbed the back of his neck. âIâm working on something âa game project. Need strong visual design, someone who can handle symbolism, subtle storytelling. You know anyone?â
That alone earned him a long look. So he explained more in details because he wanted this to work the way he imagined it. Asuma listened more seriously then, offering suggestions without hesitation. Saiâs artistic precision and sense of visual emotion would suit the tone. Shihoâs technical mind would help translate abstract ideas into systems that actually functioned. It was practical advice, but the older manâs expression said he understood there was more behind the project than Shikamaru was saying out loud.
Before they split off, Asuma gave him one last knowing look âthr kind adults give when they recognize the signs of a student being quietly, hopelessly wrapped up in someone. Shikamaru didnât deny it. He didnât confirm it either. But the softness that slipped into his expression for just a second was answer enough.
He walked away already pulling out his phone, his focus narrowing to the screen as the hallway noise faded into background static. The faint curve of a smile tugged at his mouth âsmall, private, and completely unbothered by how obvious it wouldvâe been to anyone paying attention.
Shikamaru: Thinking of me already? Thatâs efficient. You busy later, or do you want to grab lunch together?
He hit send, slipped the phone back into his pocket, and looked up at the path ahead. For once, his steps didnât drag. He had a game to build.
Not long after Usagi's text to Shikamaru her phone dinged, making her curve to the side of the hallway to stay out of people's path and check her messages.
She found herself immediately thinking- no, hoping it was Shikamaru texting her back and before she had her screen lit she inwardly sighed at herself again. Like the usually distant and public affection avoiding socially awkward bunny had been replaced with some pink, heart emoji adorned creature who just wanted to yap about her boyfriend and smooch in the hallways like some gross highschool romance movie character.
But much to her amusement, the text was Shikamaru. He asked about lunch, and even in text his usual tone of voice came through.
U-sa-gii: Luuuunch omg yes plz! Ty shikadeer âĄ
U-sa-gii: dear**
U-sa-gii: ykw? Deer. Deer is funnier.
Without thinking another second she opened Shikamaru's contact details and edited his nickname to 'ShikaDeerđŚ' and put her phone away again.
She hadn't even noticed the goofy smile that, in all fairness, should be paying rent for its permanent residence on her face.
Who did notice, was Ino. And her coding companion Choji.
"My, aren't you uncharacteristically cheerful, 'Sagi!" Ino spoke in that tone that screamed that she knew things. Like she had her whiteboard filled wifh pictures and notes all connected by miles of red thread. Choji nodded along with his friend, part of the conversation but with his eyes focussed on the cafetaria coupons in his hands. "How about we catch up over lunch? Those projects keep us from chatting all the time."
"Yeah, we should chat 'n eat!"
Usagi happily agreed, casually commenting about meeting Shikamaru for lunch so they could all hang out, but as soon as the words left her mouth she quickly realised that maybe Shikamaru would prefer to eat with her alone. She barely got a chance to finish that thought before Ino had an arm swung around her shoulder and steered her into the direction of the cafetaria.
"Ooh? Shikamaru, huh?" Ino's voice was full of mischief, a gleam in her eyes. "Choji here told me Shika has been ..distracted all day. So unlike him! But of course Choji didn't ask, no he doesn't snoop like that." Her tone was cooing at the end, painting Choji as innocent as could be. "But I'm not against gossip and whispers! Could it be he's been distracted by a certain artist lady?"
With Ino slung across her shoulders and Choji trailing along the three quickly reached the cafetaria, and Usagi felt it was going to be anything but relaxing.
Shikamaru was halfway across the campus when he checked his phone again, thumb hovering for a second before he typed out a short message asking where she was. The answer didnât matter much âhe already had a good idea sheâd be near the cafeteria â but the act of reaching out felt⌠right. Casual. Easy. The faint smile that had been lingering since class hadnâd gone anywhere, and he didnât bother hiding it from himself.
He was in the middle of sending a follow up text when he walked straight into someone. Again.
The impact was light, barely more than a shoulder bump, but enough to make him pause. When he looked up and recognized Shiho, his brain shifted gears almost immediately. Timing was troublesome âbut also inconveniently perfect. She adjusted her glasses, already apologizing, already glancing at the time like she was mentally juggling three deadlines at once. Shikamaru caught the signs fast. Efficient. Busy. Sharp.
They walked a few steps together, conversation sliding naturally toward group projects and practices. He mentioned the game casually at first âthen found himself explaining more than heâd planned. Not the whole thing but just enough to outline mechanics, symbolism, the need for someone who could understand hidden layers without having everything spelled out. Shiho got it almost instantly. Asked the right questions. Poked at the weak spots. Pointed out what would and wouldnât work under time constraints.
She agreed to help âconditionally. Very limited availability. A narrow window before sheâd be swallowed whole by another school project. Shikamaru weighed his options in silence, mental branches splitting and collapsing just as quickly. Lunch could wait. Opportunities like this didnât line up often, and heâd already committed to the game, to doing it right.
He glanced at his phone again, the screen still open, her contact name sitting there brighter than it had any right to be. For a moment, he hesitated. Then he typed out a message, tone relaxed, almost too casual, explaining he had to push lunch back because something came up. No excuses. No over explaining. Just the truth, trimmed down to its essentials.
As he slipped the phone back into his pocket and followed Shiho toward a quieter building, the smile faded ânot entirely, but enough to settle into something more thoughtful. It wasnât regret he felt. More like awareness. choices stacking up already, consequences brushing close to things he didnât want to mishandle again.
With Ino's arm still slung around her Usagi fished for her phone when it buzzed in her pocket. When Shikamaru's name sat atop of the notification she just got she contemplated opening it, unsure if she wanted to with peeking eyes next to her.
But, seeing it was Ino, she had of course already caught the nickname his contact had recently gotten and the damage had been done already. So, she opened it.
It wasn't a nice message, really. But she understood. She could sometimes also not outrun the ever shifting schedules of college.
Worming her other hand from inbetween her side and Ino's she wrote a quick and understanding reply. One that simply offered good luck on his adventure and a rescheduling opportunity for when he was available again.
"Ahw, bummer!" Ino cooed from beside her as she led the two after Choji who had claimed a table already, still unknowing of Shikamaru's cancellation.
Lunch was simple food and laughter. The mood kept light as they all caught up on personal things and eventually split once again when classes were about to start again.
Usagi sat through the last periods of her day in a haze of hoping to get a text back, and doodling on a side canvas while her teammates all worked on their last minute fixes for the game presentation. Usagi's parts were all done and filed, and even the presentation was finished aside from the assets the others still hadn't filed for her to add in. So all in all, Usagi was done with all her work, permitting herself to zone out and do her own thing.
Doodles of nothing in particular became night skies with shapes made out of stars. Horizons with small, old fantasy styled houses and sheds, wells and woods. Some more modern skylines as well, with clouds partially covering the sky and its stars, scribbles of clearing those clouds to show the light.
Another layer held creatures. Some fantasy beasts and woodland animals.
Deer.
They kept appearing as she moved her pen across the surface of her tablet, in all shapes and sizes all up till the moment her last period ended and with it her day in the school halls.
She had been so absorbed by her art, she hadn't even thought of checking her phone until her feet touched the floor of her dorm room.
Shikamaru lost track of time in the quiet corner Shiho had claimed for them, the world narrowing down to screens, notes âand the steady rhythm of ideas snapping into place. She dissected his concept with surgical precision, pulling apart mechanics and themes, testing where symbolims could live without overwhelming playability. Every so often, sheâd pause, adjust her glasses and point out a flaw he hadnât wanted to admit was there âand every time, she was right. Troublesome, sure, but in the best way. By the time they finished outlining systems, progression, and visual language, the project felt sharper and leaner, like something that could actually stand on its own.
Sai joined later, just as Asuma had predicted he would. He slipped into the workflow seamlessly, studying what was already there before adding anything of his own âwhere Shiho refined structure, Sai gave form. Minimalist concepts, visual motifs that echoed emotion without spelling it out, designs that left room for interpretation. Shikamaru watched the two of them work and felt a rare sense of relief settle in his chest. This was the kind of collaboration heâd hoped for without daring to expect.
By the end of it, timelines were set. four days. that was all they needed to produce something tangible âthen Shikamaru would continue from there until something strong enough to present was ready. He thanked them both, meaning it more than he bothered to show, and insisted on paying them for their effort despite their initial protests. Fair was fair. He packed up his things with a clearer head than heâd had all day.
Once outside, the evening air hit him like a reset button. The campus was quieter now, shadows stretching long across the paths, lights flickering on one by one. As he walked, his thoughts drifted âunhelpfully, inevitablyâ back to her, his girlfriend. To the lunch heâd postponed. To the unanswered space heâd left hanging. He pulled out his phone, hesitated only a moment, then changed direction without overthinking it.
By the time he reached her dorm, the sky had darkened fully. He stopped in front of the door, hands in his pockets, feeling oddly aware of himself for someone who usually didnât care. He sent a short messageâŚ
Usagi had dropped her keys and bag at the side table near the door of her dorm, walked into the kitchen and grabbed an apple on autopilot. Chewing away she leaned against the counter, fishing her phone from her pocket to swipe at notifications and see what she missed during those last hours she spent in her drawing haze.
There were quite a few. Yet a lot of them unimportant. Likes and shares of artworks that didn't leave anything for her to read. Some required a quick response, not much of a task to get through all of it aa she munched on her apple.
Clearing out notifications soon turned into aimless scrolling once the last comment that needed replying was taken care of. Words and images sat on her screen but none of them really reached where they should. Nothing stuck.
With the world around her blurring around her phone screen her fingers dragged over the screen in an absentminded rhythm, more automated movement than intentionally moving to the next post to look at. Because, she wasn't even really looking. Not with her mind buzzing about a million and none things at the same time.
Not even the automated background songs or video sounds that played for at most two seconds at a time took her out of that funk. The same three starting notes of the currently trending tune payed on repeat, everyone hoped that by putting the song over their work the algorithm would pick it up faster.
Usagi didn't believe in that crap. Never had, and was never going to.
Scroll, scroll, scroll. It was all the same. Random reels taken from a million different places that had nothing to do with her interest, braindead scrolling until a message popped up at the top of her screen.
ShikaDeerđŚ: Can I see you? I'm outside đ
The message completely pulled her out of her funk, the deer emoji kicking her heartbeat in high gear in the best way possible.
U-Sa-Gii: Omw!! <3
She was already three steps out of the kitchen when it sent, and it took only a few more seconds for her to open the door and find Shikamaru lounging against the wall across from her door, just a little off to the side to be just that little bit of nonchalant about it.
A soft sigh left her at the sight of him. Like the day just became less of a drag in his presence. "Hi, Shika."
Shikamaru looked up the second the door opened, like heâd been tracking her footsteps before she even stepped into view. For a moment, he just stood there âleaning against the wall, hands in his pockets, expression unreadable in that usual, lazy way of his. But the second his eyes settled on her, something shifted.
The long dragged out day, the missed lunch, thr constant thinking, the quiet second guessing âit all seemed to fall into place in an instant. Yeah⌠this is what I was missing. Troublesome how quickly that realization came, and even more troublesome how obvious it felt now.
âHey,â he said, softer than he intended âthough he didnt give himself time to overthink it.
Pushing off the wall, he crossed the distance in a few easy steps and pulled her into him, one arm wrapping around her waist while the other settled against her back. It wasnât hesitant. It wasnât careful either, just instinctive âlike his body had already decided before his brain could argue otherwise.
She fit.
That was the first thing he noticed and the second was how easily the tension in his shoulders finally let go.
His chin dipped slightly ad he exhaled, resting there for just a second before pressing a slow, warm kiss to her forehead. ââŚMissed youâ he admitted. The words slipped out before he could filter them, and for once, he didnât try to take them back. There wasnât any point pretending otherwise ânot after every thing theyâd already stumbled through.
he pulled back just enough to look at her, hands still resting at her sides, thumbs brushing idly against her sleeves like he hadnât quite decided to let go yet. His gaze lingered âstudying, a little softer than usual, like he was quietly confirming she was okay⌠that they were okay.
Then, slowly, that familiar smirk returned âsubtle, controlled, but warmer than before.
âSo,â he said, tone easing back into its usual calm rhythm, âcan I come inâŚâ his eyes flicked briefly past her shoulder, taking in the dim interior of her dorm, before settling back on her ââŚor do you want to go somewhere else?â
It was casual on the surface. An option. No pressure âbut underneath it, his thoughts were already settling into something more certain.
Doesnât really matter where âŚas long as I donât mess this up again.
Where Shikamaru's text made her heartbeat pick up a few notches, seeing him waiting for her washed all of that adrenaline away.
He had that effect on her and she had no clue why or how, only that it was oh so very welcome in her life.
That natural relaxing aura of his put Usagi under its spell almost immediately. So much so that she didn't catch the subtle shift in Shikamaru as she stepped up to him.
He met her in the middle of her stride, the soft 'hey' working its way into her heart in a way that was new to her. Even the simple tone of his voice made her mind and body react.
"Hi."
It was barely above a whisper. A breath being pushed out by the sheer overwhelming presence of Shikamaru pulling her into a hug.
Warm. Soft. Gentle.
Good.
Usagi practically melted against his chest, his breath fanning her skin and his lips pressed softly against her head. Everything from the look in his eyes to the way he spoke, having words only for her had her floating on a cloud almost forgetting the world around them, or that they were still standing in the middle of the hallway.
She could get lost in that moment right there..
..if it weren't for Konan barging through the doorway as if to purposefully ruin the moment, exclaim she was leaving for the night and to "not be gross in the living area." like she wasn't the one doing that most of the time, and then promptly turn down the hall and walk off.
Usagi hadn't answered Shikamaru's question yet, but with Konan's departure she didn't really have to. Stepping aside with one hand loosely holding his and a blush on her face.
"You eh. You can come in." With the gentlest of tugs she padded toward the still slightly opened door and led Shikamaru inside.
Like let me sit your lap with your hands on my waist while I talk your ear off about something stupid that I just feel like telling you about. Let me play with your hands. Let me run my nails along your muscles to relax you. Lay your head in my lap while I scratch your head so you can fall asleep. Letâs cuddle while we watch tv at night in a dim lounge room with only the soft light of a lamp. Let me brush your hair and play with it. Let me literally just exist in your space.
Shikamaru stopped outside her place just long enough to adjust the strap of his bag over one shoulder, posture relaxed like always âbut the way his eyes lifted to her door gave him away. Focused. Anticipating.
He was dressed simply. A black tshirt clung to his frame, plain at first glance, but beneath it a long-sleeved mesh layer hugged his arms, the faint pattern visible where the porch light caught it just right. The contrast worked unfairly well on him âcasual and calculated at the same time. Baggy pants sat low on his hips, comfortable, unbothered, very him. No armor. No rank. Just Shikamaru, off duty.
He stepped up and knocked âthree slow, unhurried taps ans while he waited, a small smirk tugged at his mouth.
Try not to look too good, heâd said. Like sheâd listen.
Then the door opened. And for a split secondâjust a fraction of oneâ he froze. Not outwardly. Not enough for anyone else to notice. But his eyes flicked over her once, quick and instinctive, before settling back on her face. Ponytail. Ribbon. The way her clothes fit like sheâd chosen them with care but not desperation.
âDamn..â he said, the word slipping out before he could stop it. Though, he recovered smoothly, leaning one shoulder against the door frame like he hadnât just been caught off guard. âSo much for my concentrationâ he added dryly, dark eyes glinting with amusement. âyou did that on purpose, didnât you?â
His gaze dipped ârespectful, appreciativeâ then met hers again, softer now.
âYou ready?â he asked, offering his hand like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Shikamaru let out a quiet huff of amusement when she admitted to being nervous, eyes flicking to her with that lazy, knowing look.
âYeah?â he drawled. âCouldâve fooled me. Youâre doing a pretty good job hiding it.â
He watched her as they walked âthe way she laughed, the way she filled the silence without forcing it, the way she bumped his shoulder like it was instinct. It wasnât loud confidence, or practiced charm. It was something easier. Something honest.
Troublesome, he thought fondly. And stupidly cute.
âIf youâve got a profile sheetâ he went on, tone teasing, âIm guessing nervous but tries anyway is listed under strengths.â A small smirk tugged at his mouth. âI respect that.â
The restaurant came into view not long after âit was a modest bbq place tucked slightly off the main street, warm light spilling through its wide windows. The smell alone was enough to make it clear why he liked it. Familiar. Comforting. No pressure to pretend.
He held the door open for her without comment and followed her inside, the quiet hum of conversation and the sizzle of grills greeting them. The waitress recognized him immediately, smiling as she led them to a table near a large window overlooking the street, lantern light glowing softly against the glass.
âBBQof the day is the house special,â she said cheerfully, setting menus down. âComes with sides. Canât go wrong with it.â
Shikamaru barely glanced at the menu. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, elbow resting casually on the table as his attention returned fully to Usagi. âThat what you feel like?â he asked, voice easy, eyes warm. âItâs good. Real good.â A pause, then a faint smirk. âBut if youâve got something else in mind, Iâm not picky.â
He tilted his head slightly, studying her like he genuinely wanted to know.
Usagi felt her cheeks warm up at the compliments that came so effortlessly. It was sweet how he managed to turn those small insecurities into positives.
They walked in such comfort the trip seemed over in an instant, and the restaurant of choice was a very pleasant surprise.
A smile spread on her face as they walked in and Usagi could smell the grills from the front door. She wondered if maybe she had mentioned before that she loved this type of food, or if Shikamaru went and asked someone about it.
Either way she eagerly followed along towards their table and listened to the offers.
"House special sounds good. I don't have anything specific in mind and I trust your judgement." Usagi smiled kindly at the waitress taking their order who continued on taking their drink orders as well before making her way off again, leaving the two sitting across from one another.
"I'm happy to hear you're having a good time already." Leaning down with her chin resting on her hands she cast a kind glance over at Shikamaru lounging in his chair. "I'm enjoying myself as well."
Conversation flowed naturally while they waited for their orders, only pausing to accept their drinks and thank the server before falling back into it seamlessly. It flowed from simple things, day to day life to wacky memories and random facts. It held no logic to any outside viewer but to them it all felt natural.
Only when the food arrived did the talking die down a little in favor of eating.
Shikamaru watched her for a second longer than necessary when she said she trusted his judgment. âThat⌠did something to him. But he wouldnât admit to it âat least not yet.
When the food arrived, he glanced at her plate first, then at her face, a smug little look slipping through. âTold you,â he said, tapping his chopsticks lightly against the table. âI donât steer people wrong. Remember that for future reference.â
They ate for a bit, silence settling in comfortably. Shikamaru took his time, then looked at her again, chin resting against his knuckles. âYou know whatâs funny?â he said. âMost people are trying way too hard on first dates. Asking the right questions. Saying the right things.â A pause. His eyes flicked up to meet hers. âYouâre just⌠being you.â
A faint smirk.
âAnd somehow thatâs working out very well for me.â He took another bite, then added casuallyâtoo casually, âso. hypothetically. If I were already planning a second dateâŚâ his gaze lingered on her, teasing and knowing. ââŚwould you pretend to be surprised? Or should I skip the suspense?â
There was warmth in his eyes when he smiled again. âDonât answer yet,â he added. âI like watching you think about it.â
Usagi thanked the server when their food arrived. The table quickly filled with plates of meats and various sides making her eyes widen at the selection.
No time was wasted and soon the sizzling of meat was the only noise shared between the two. That was, until Shikamaru's voice had her look up, brows raised in show for him to continue.
"Hmhm." She mumbled around her good before swallowing. "I suck at acting. Being me is easiest. Also, why make a date sound like a job interview instead of a fun time together? That's weird.." To punctuate her sentence she took another bite.
It was only when the words 'second date' fell so casually from his lips that she stopped mid-chew.
"Hm?" It was almost inaudible, but her eyes spoke for her. As she listened to what he had to say she felt her face heat up, pink creeping up her skin at the simple mention of him already thinking of another date while this one had only just started.
Like he asked she didn't verbally answer, opting to first finish the bite she had now continued to chew on followed by a large gulp of her drink to settle the sudden emotional heatwave crashing over her.
"I'm happy you chose this place, really." With a smile that said 'here, didn't answer.' she poked her chopstick through a tender piece of meat on the grill, taking it to her mouth before stopping once again to speak.
"How did you know I liked this kind of food? Can't remember mentioning it before."
Shikamaru caught everything. Even without trying he was always able to read his surroundings âspecially body language and Usagi wasnât the exception.
The pause mid-chew, her quiet little âhmâ and the way she suddenly reached for her drink like it might save her from the heat creeping up her face. His smirk deepened âslow, satisfied, but not cruel. Just amused in that quiet, knowing way of his.
Yeah, he thought. Definitely heard that loud and clear.
He leaned back slightly in his chair, watching her with half lidded eyes as she dodged the question with that sweet little smile.
âMm,â he hummed. âNice deflection.â a brief pause followed, his gaze lingering on her just long enough to make it clear he wasnât fooled. âBut Iâll take it.â There was still warmth under the teasing âhe wasnât disappointed in the lack of answer, just entertained by how she had handled it.
At her question, though, his expression shifted slightly. Still relaxed, still him âbut a bit more thoughtful now, even if the smirk never fully left his lips.
âYou didnât say it,â he admitted, lazily turning a piece of meat on the grill with his chopsticks. His eyes flicking back up to her. âBut you dont strike me as someone who enjoys stiff, overpriced places where you have to sit straight and pretend your not hungry.â He tilted his head slightly. âYou like things you can actually enjoy. Good food with no pressure.â
His chopsticks tapped lightly against the edge of his plate as he continued. âAndâŚâ he added casually, âIâve seen what you pick when youâre not thinking about being watched.â
âI pay attention, Usagiâ a quiet truth, spoken simply. Then, just as easily, the teasing slipped back in. âBesides,â he added, resting his chin against his hand again, âI had a feeling if I got this right, youâd trust me a little more next time.â
A small, knowing smirk followed.
âWhich, judging by that earlier answerâŚâ his eyes flicked over her briefly, amused, âits already working.â
"Hmhmm." Usagi nodded along as she chewed her food and swallowed.
"Please, keep me far away from fancy places like that. I'd need a detour past Ichiraku on the way home to feel full after those overpriced bites." Laughing at herself and the mental image of her in an uncomfortable outfit picked only to match the snobby restaurant, sitting on a bar stool at the ramen shop slurping away and complaining.
"We should go there some day, nice and simple." It came out so casually, not even a thought of how it might have sounded.
A simple statement of an unfiltered thought, nothing more, nothing less.
He pays attention, he said. He really did. And with every little detail of it that came to light it became more and more clear to her that even with her what seemed to be age old adoration for the guy, she paid way less attention than she thought she did.
"I eh.." Averting her eyes a little she pushed around some food on the grill. "I appriciate the eh, paying attention thing."
Usagi wanted nothing more than to keep the light, comfortable conversation going, but her mind kept running back to the confession of Shikamaru already actively thinking of a second date.
There was something about the confidence with which he carried these statements. It made her feel.. seen.
Again, 'next time' made its way to her ears and it made heat rise to her cheeks faster than any of the table grills ever could.

Usagi, being in the same age group as the main Konoha gang started the academy in the same year and got to know most of the other students at a surface level.
Seeing she struggled with proper chakra output she quickly became friends with Lee, who excitedly introduced her to Taijutsu to balance out her strengths and weaknesses. While she is nowhere near his level of strength, Usagi does maintain a training schedule she barely ever slacks off on.
With her mother being a fire users and her father working as a chef Usagi developed a love for food and helping in the kitchen, using her limited chakra control to produce small fires for grilling. Her love for grilled food led her to become good friends with Choji, trading home cooked meals, trading recipes and even going as far as planning events with both families that lasted during their shared academy time.
She had always admired students from larger, more known clans with their specialized jutsus. they were all so different from the base elemental users. She didn't have an affinity for anything but fire, nor did she have fancy eyes so her focus went to the things the could get her hands on.
Weapons.
She spent time with Tenten to learn about summoning scrolls and patterns that led her to slightly better her chakra channeling and eventually to get the most familiar weapon sigils tattooed on her arm for quicker access. Her weaknesses made her feel like she had to excel in the things the could do, which was summoning smaller weapons that she practiced to the point of passing out from exhaustion on more than one occasion.
Usagi stayed in the same grade as the group up till the written test during the Chuunin exams where her team failed and and she was left to observe from afar. When during the fighting round the attack on Konoha began she, somewhere deep down, felt glad they failed and decided she would continue on as a civilian but still keep up with her training.
