i'm a new(ish) hockey fan, and the primary teams i follow are: San Jose Sharks, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Victoire, Syracuse Crunch, and PWHL San Jose. (with an obvious Sharks bias, bc of course, i'm a trend following stereotype.) and somehow, i've accidentally become a fan of Bay Area sports. (i am not from the Bay Area. i'm nowhere near it, actually.) so some other teams i may post about are: SF Giants, WPBL San Francisco, and MLV NorCal. i'm the biggest goalie enthusiast to ever exist, the goalie can do no wrong in my eyes.

In the aftermath of William getting into a fight on the ice in Kiefer's honor, Kiefer checks up on him to make sure he's okay, chastising him for move. Neither of them expect William to be so touch-starved that a little concern from a teammate works him up this much. William feels nearly pathetic, with it.
Kiefer finds a way to take care of William.
Okay, so their story starts in Saginaw, Michigan. Over the summer of 2024, Igor Chernyshov gets drafted to the San Jose Sharks and taken by the Saginaw Spirit in the CHL Import Draft. He mightâve tampered his way to Saginaw because his agency Gold Star has a pretty strong connection with that OHL team but this is all speculation. However, he gets shoulder surgery that summer and spends the fall and most of the winter recovering from it, so he doesnât start playing with Saginaw until early 2025. (He was spending time with the team during rehab tho iirc)
Now, during the 24-25 season Michael Misa was in the midst of having an INCREDIBLE draft year with the Spirit. He ends up tying Patrick Kane for most goals by an OHL draft eligible (62) and leads the league in scoring (134). However, he was just snubbed from the 2025 WJC team for Canada and had just been named captain of the Saginaw Spirit, so there was a lot of pressure on him. In January, NHL Central Scouting had him third for North American skaters, and until that point, he wasnât considered to have fully met the expectations that came from his exceptional status. His draft year was his breakout and âprove itâ year.
Enter Igor Chernyshov: he plays his first game with the Spirit and on Misaâs line on January 30th, and they score mere seconds into their shift. At this point, Igor barely speaks English and is relying on Spirit teammate Dima Zhilkin to translate for him, but his chemistry with Misa is undeniable. The Chernyshov-Misa-Epperson line along with Zayne Parekh on the blue line absolutely terrorize the OHL for the 20 something games they play together. (Here is a thread for every goal Igor and Michael both registered points on while on the Saginaw Spirit) This raises Misaâs draft stock and also makes Sharks fans warm up to him due to their chemistry.
During the predraft interviews, Misa is practically gushing when asked about Igor. His roommate at the combine Malcom Spence even leaks that Misa is hoping to go to San Jose. This praise of Chernyshov continues in post draft interviews as seen in this compilation I made of Misa being asked about him in interviews.
The Sharks clearly notice their chemistry too, as theyâre put on a line together for Prospect Scrimmage in July and Rookie Faceoff in September. During Misaâs conditioning stint with the Barracuda, they were put on the power play together. While they havenât gotten a ton of NHL opportunities on a line together, they did contribute on two goals during one of the games they were on a line together.

William was born 10/12/02, in Haninge, Sweden to Christian Eklund and Mia Lundell. His father Christian played various levels of junior and professional hockey in Sweden and Germany from 1994-2011. Christian primarily played with DjurgĂĽrdens IF, a Swedish Hockey League team based in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother, Mia, used to be a figure skater. Currently, she enjoys skiing and takes her sons along with her. His paternal grandparents names are Anders and Sarina.
Christian Eklund goes by the nickname Fimpen (translates to "cigarette butt") and has a pretty significant social media presence (podcast, youtube channel, etc) making hockey and travel/food content. He retired due to a neck injury, and describes himself as a gritty, physical player. All of his content is predictably in Swedish, but he seems to have a sense of humor and is a very big jokester personality type.
amusing tidbit: Mia seems to be good friends with Will Smith's mother. They posted a video to a popular TikTok trend recently.
William's main nickname is Eky/Ekky (the SJS account spelt it as Eky on their 2025-56 nickname guide, but I've seen both used by fans). He also jokingly gets called Slippery Pete now and then, due to his play style. Brent Burns has called him the Gecko because he "slings around like a little lizard".
William's younger brother, Victor Eklund (four years younger than him), is currently under contract with the New York Islanders. (drafted 16th overall in 2025) Victor spent most of the 25-26 season playing for DjurgĂĽrdens IF in Sweden, though, with a couple of games with the Bridgeport Islanders and one game with the NYI that was his NHL debut late in the season.
His parents divorced when he and Victor were seemingly quite young, and both have since remarried.
On his mother's side, William has two younger brothers, Elton Lundell (13) and Edvin Lundell (10), both of whom are currently in Swedish junior hockey programs.
amusing tidbit: Edvin seems to be a large Connor Bedard fan and has posted several Bedard edits on TikTok, as well as other general hockey edits. He has no edits of his brother.
On his father's side, William has a much younger brother named Frank (~7 yrs old), and a younger step-sister. (~19 yrs old)
William is deeply loving of Victor, and has been his number one supporter through Victor's journey into the NHL. Though they scuffle and shove each other around when they play hockey, it's a strong brotherly bond.
his hockey career
Similar to his father, William spent the entirety of his Swedish career with DjurgĂĽrdens IF. In the 2018-19 season, he played 13 games with their U20 team. He started the 2019-20 season on the U20 team, but moved up to the SHL team in January at 17, playing a COVID-shortened season with them. In 2020-21, he played a full season with the SHL, recording 23 points over 40 games.
As a kid, he rounded up the neighborhood kids to constantly play road/land hockey with. Sometimes guys ended up in bushes.
In 2019, William played in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup (an U18 hockey tournament) for Sweden, and got bronze.
He was named the SHL Rookie of the Year *and* Swedish junior player of the year in 2021. He also won the E. J. McGuire Award of Excellence the same year, which is given to an NHL draft prospect who displays character, competitiveness, and athleticism. (Michael Misa won this award as well in 2025!)
In 2021, William was drafted 7th overall by the San Jose Sharks. (sadly, he got a COVID year draft and thus it was done over video call.) William was considered the top international prospect going into the draft, however, Swedish defenseman Simon Edvinsson went 6th before him.
He made his NHL debut on October 16th, 2021, recording an assist on the GWG. After nine games, he was sent back to DjurgĂĽrdens IF for the remainder of the season, with the on paper reason being worry that he was too young to keep up with the pace of an 82 game season. Again in the 2022-23 season, he played only 8 games with the Sharks before being sent down to the Barracuda. The reasoning this time was to give the Barracuda more strong talent for the playoff push they were going through at the time (whilst the Sharks were one of the worst in the league). However, given both times he was sent down before hitting 10 NHL games, the *real* reason for sending him down was to extend his contract further. (entry level NHL contracts can be extended an extra year, if a player plays less than 10 games in the NHL) William was pissed about this decision both times, because by all accounts, he was more than ready for the NHL, skill-wise.
Since 2023, William has played three full seasons with the Sharks. Despite having to play through The Dark Times (when the Sharks were absolutely terrible) he consistently ranked as one of, if not the strongest winger on the team. Before Will Smith settled into Mack's line, William was the one usually in that spot.
He is currently on a three year $16.8 million contract, that he signed in 2025.
his streak of terrible luck
William has had... just a series of utter unfortunate events that have crowbarred several important chances he had to grow his game. He tested positive for COVID and had to miss out on World Juniors in 2022.
During about the same time, he missed a good bit of time to have an appendectomy as well.
He's had the typical smaller hockey injuries that have taken him out a couple games, but the real big one of his career this far has been taking a skate to the wrist a pre-tournament game for the IIHF World Championship. He had surgery and was out for several months rehabbing the wrist instead of training. This injury predictably did affect his shot (which was a contributing factor to him being lower on goal-scoring this season, despite having good assist numbers) and he's spending this off-season working on his shot. (he did not go to Worlds this year, likely to focus on training instead) William's name was constantly in talks for the Swedish Olympic roster this year, to the point he did *several* interviews discussing the Olympics in a way that implied he was a sure bet to be on the team. He ended up not making the team, something he had a chip on his shoulder about, and the biggest contributing factor was his injury giving him a pretty rocky start to the season. It's pretty likely that William's stats would be even higher this year, if he hadn't spent so much important time in recovery.
some fun highlights
William got his first (and currently, only) hat trick on April 6th, 2024 against the Blues. The final score was 3-2 in overtime (meaning he scored every Sharks goal that game). This delightfully happened on hat night in the Shark Tank, so extra fun hats got tossed for him.
On March 12th, 2026, William scored undisputed the Goal of the Year⢠against the Bruins in a 4-2 win. He batted his own rebound out of the air when he got tripped by Swayman.
The PEAK shenanigans William got up to was against the NY Islanders on March 7th, 2026. When a fight broke out in front of the Sharks bench, William STOLE Bo Horvat's stick and chucked it down the tunnel (with an equipment manager acting as his partner in crime). This led to Horvat arguing with William and flicking his visor (to which William gave him almost no reaction, arguably making it funnier), which got Horvat a 2.5k fine. William is of course a perfect angel who has "no clue what happened to Horvat's stick" and doesn't know what you're talking about. Horvat also finds the interaction pretty funny in hindsight.
amusing tidbit: as aforementioned, Victor Eklund is under the NYI and has played a game with Horvat, getting his first assist on one of Horvat's goals. This led to them playfully arguing over who deserved the puck, Horvat insisting it go to Victor. Bo Horvat cannot stop losing important equipment to the Eklund brothers.
another tidbit: William's dad, Christian, posted a video trying several times to recreate The Goal. Take that how you will.
friends/teammate relationships
By far, the stand-out friendship for William is Fabian Zetterlund, to the point Zetterlund seems good friends with William's father as much as William. They were incredibly close on the Sharks, and describe each other as family. When Zetterlund got traded, William was absolutely destroyed about it. They found out together. Zetterlund has said that the thing he misses the most about San Jose is William.
He's good friends with Alex Hotlz, they grew up together, and play Fortnite together. (William seems to play video games a lot when he's just lounging around, such as FIFA. He's excited for GTA 6.)
Rasmus Sandin is also close to William and Zetterlund, all three of them vacationed together in St. Barth during the Olympic break, with Swedish skier Lisa Hornblad.
He has a group of childhood friends from Sweden who showed up to a game to support him, once! He's trained in Sweden with a variety of Swedish players in the NHL.
Of players still on the Sharks, William seems pretty close to Alex Wennberg, hanging out with his family enough that he's been referred to as the "fun uncle" of Wenny's kids.
William is, of course, close to most of the younger players on the team (Mack, Smitty, Misa, etc) and they all rib each other on Instagram a lot with inside jokes that are very cute.
his personality/demeanor/play style
William is a left winger, currently on the second line of the Sharks. He's in the top five point scorers for the Sharks for all three of his full seasons. He's a pass-first playmaker, overwhelmingly higher on his assists than his goals. As his nicknames suggest, he's a very slippery/agile skater. As far as NHL players go, he's on the smaller side (if you don't count Cagnoni being called up, he was the shortest of the 25-26 roster at 5'11) and has *very* strong puck handling skills making it easy for him to slip in, grab the puck, and absolutely book it. He has a very high hockey IQ and hockey vision, and is great at faking out the opposing team.
He's a very different type of player than his father and Victor, both of whom are more of tough grinder types, while they both describe William as a slick sort of player.
Further, unlike his father, he's not a physical player. This doesn't mean he's not a fighter! William's most notable scuffles involve throwing hands to protect his teammates. His first fight on the Barracuda was against Gawdin after a hit on his teammate, Brandon Coe got hit. He scuffled with Moser when Macklin Celebrini got hit. He scuffled with Marchessault when Fabian Zetterlund got hit. He and Mack *both* fought Wotherspoon when Will Smith got hit pretty bad. And of course, he had his big fight with Toivanen when they just seemed to piss each other off.
Despite the fighting, it is a nearly unanimous decision that William is terrible at chirping. All bite no bark boy.
His position in his family is... interesting. William is self-described as "more mature" than the other young guys on the Sharks. He's an oldest brother, who faced a *lot* of parenting responsibilities shirked onto him of having to help raise his younger brothers, particularly on his dad's side. This whole interview is full of interesting tidbits that constantly describe him as more mature, self-sufficient, stoic, and a quieter guy in the locker room. I'm not going to call it parentification, but I'm also not... not going to call it that. He has described teammates like Misa as reminding him of his younger brother, Victor, and I think that really shapes how he interacts with them as a leader sort of figure.
William once got a "best babysitter" award from sharksmin, and described how many teammates he's babysat for. I think this is an interesting thing that he seems universally trusted around children, and a lot more comfortable in his maturity and leadership than other guys his age.
In the above video, he also refers to hanging out with willmack as babysitting. He was definitely joking, but it is interesting how he calls Smitty a "kid" despite them being almost the same age. He sets himself apart from the younger core of the Sharks, and guys who he seemed closest with as true peers all have been traded.
He's still a fun person to hang around, and is self-described as a pretty positive guy. As seen with his above shenanigans, he is absolutely a shit-stirrer at heart, just not the loudest about it. (can't be an oldest brother if you're not occasionally evil) He has fun pre-game routines with other players (my personal favorite is how he likes to charge Mack before games) and seems like a pretty key part of the Sharks locker room, as a hype man and protector of teammates.
facts i find interesting
He has described his music taste as Swedish rap, and mentioned liking artists like Swedish House Mafia and Avicii.
He rents a place in Campbell, California, near Santana Row. He drives a BMW X3M in California and a Volvo XC60 in Sweden. He's weirdly into SUVs.
His favorite player growing up was Nicklas Backstrom.
Fogo de Chao is one of his favorite food spots in San Jose.
Pretty Woman is one of his favorite movies.
He likes lavender candles.
In the Barracuda, William roomed with Jasper Weatherby, who once accidentally climbed into his bed in the hotel room.
He is, of course, best friends with Sharkie.
He's a more casual fit kinda guy on game day (tho he breaks out the occasional suit) and once got chirped at by the announcers for dressing so casually on picture day.
He has no real reason for wearing #72, it's just the number that was given to him and he stuck with it. (he has occasionally worn #27 when he couldn't wear 72, and Victor currently wears #73, and one of his younger brothers wears #71, so it seems the number has gained significance to him atp)
Of course, he is very known for his love of Swedish candy, which his grandparents bring over for him often, and is often given to him by fans. Black licorice is one of his favorites.
In some fics I've read, I see Will or Willy used as nicknames for him. Neither of these are names he's ever identified with, nor would really make sense for a Swedish William to use. In this SJS video, you can see how he pronounces the Swedish nickname for William, which is typed as Wille.
William is the longest tenured player on the Sharks, besides Mario Ferraro. (Goodrow played on the Sharks before William, but got traded a couple times before returning) If rumors are to be believed, Ferraro likely won't resign during his free agency, which will officially crown William as Longest Standing Shark.
As of current, there aren't any ships for William on Ao3 that have broken 25 works but the four "big" ones (if you count having more than a dozen as big) are: Luke Hughes, Collin Graf, Thomas Bordeleau, and Fabian Zetterlund. Bordeleau and Zetterlund are ofc both ex-teammates William was/is close with who've since been traded, Graf is the current fandom fave for a young Shark to pair William up with (often to bring balance to willmack and/or samisa shipping, a la "pair the spares") and to my best understanding, Hughes started out as a crack ship on TikTok for fun to pair up two popular(ish) hockey guys of the same age group that just took off, to give Hughes a ship to balance out shipping his brothers with their common pairings. (there's no evidence these two have significantly interacted) I think the main reason William hasn't had much rpf presence is bc of his positioning in the Sharks rebuild. He hasn't had very many teammates who've lasted more than a couple years to build interesting narratives out of, and his linemates have shifted around as the team works out what the second line should look like and what center best keeps up with his play style. I personally find the Greky shipping to be the most fun even if they don't play together on the same line often, but there are a lot of players he has good chemistry with!
