Dr. Alvarez stripped off the glove and reached for another. When she spoke again, her tone was even, but there was steel in it now.

“Listen to me carefully. Your son is still tolerating labor. The tracing is reassuring enough that I can give this a little more time. But this is a large baby, and if I keep feeling head without meaningful descent, or if your vitals worsen, or if his heart rate starts showing distress on the monitor, we stop and go to emergency C-section. I will not let this become unsafe.”

He nodded too quickly, almost frantic, breaths coming in short, ragged pulls.

“So I need him out now,” he said, voice hoarse.

“I need progress now,” she corrected. “If he gives me that, we keep going. If he doesn’t, I make the call.”

Another contraction was already gathering. His whole expression changed before the pain even fully hit—eyes widening, mouth opening, the first low groan already starting in his chest.
