bit of both! in-universe, the placement of the star marks do have a meaning, but the cats aren't really aware of it (though there may be rumors). troutstar's mark is on her throat, meaning compassion. flightstar's is above one eye, meaning he's insightful. pansystar's is on the back of his head, indicating he acts with his heart and not his head. almost all leader marks will be on or near a cat's head, but it's possible for them to be anywhere on the body
