"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
couple days ago i tagged along with my brothers and sister who were watching Spider-Man 3 (2007) and watched like, the whole thing except for the first 30 minutes of it.
Who told me that this movie was bad??? It was fantastic. Masterpiece
I mean it wasn't a good movie but it was amazing
What am I saying
In some ways that are very noticeable it was not a "Good Movie", but according to an idea of a "good movie" which is based around how embarrassed you are to be watching it
The action scenes were very creative and engaging, and interacted with the surroundings in interesting ways. All the character arcs were really well done. It had real emotional depth and drama. It was tightly plotted as well.
There was A Something that is definitely missing from MCU and I'm struggling to put my finger on what it is.
I had the same experience when I watched that spiderman trilogy a few years ago. The conclusion I came to is that what the MCU is missing is Saving People as a general motivation.
like, this is most obvious in Homecoming, where Peter wants to upgrade from the baby heroing of stopping street level crime to fighting space gods, and the progression of his arc is him gaining the experience to get that “promotion”. The implication is kinda that stopping a bus from crashing is kinda lame, cuz you only save like, what, twenty people?? And if you fight a space god, you save millions of people. There’s no point in helping someone carry their groceries or saving people in a burning building, because the numbers are too small to mean anything. What’s the point of saving anyone if you can’t save everyone? If you’re not incredibly powerful, you can’t make a real difference.
And I think this is the MCU’s disconnect from the superhero genre. We’re not watching people who have a passion for helping others and using their abilities to alleviate suffering—we’re watching people win glory in their personal epics. The soap opera of gods and giants. That’s not a bad type of story, but it lacks one of the core emotions of superhero stories—the fantasy of being able to make a tangible difference. This extends into the MCU’s unwillingness to disrupt the status quo, as described in this excellent video by PopCultureDetective. (One example of his that really stood out to me is how in Age of Ultron, Stark and Banner’s attempt to use their superhuman genius to create something that will benefit all humanity is framed as foolish, dangerous hubris.)
This incongruence is most obvious when comparing Spiderman movies, because the core of Spider-Man’s character is “great power, great responsibility”. The thing that makes Peter Parker stand out is how no matter how broke, lonely, or even powerless he is, he still tries to use what he has to help the people he can.
I think it’s also noticeable how the MCU superheroes don’t really have Helping People as their Job. Like, whatever they’re doing in between movies, when we’re not watching, when there isn’t a massive problem to solve, they don’t have Rescue as their day to day Job the same way most superheroes do. Plenty of them have Beating Up Bad Guys as their Job, but that makes them more……soldier than superhero. More military than first responder.
Anyway, that’s a huge ramble, I’ve just been thinking about this for like years trying to figure out why the MCU made me so uncomfortable.
Yes! This!

Every couple years we switch up the clownfish pairs in broodstock and this week we just retired a bunch of the older males and added new males. Some of those pairs already had eggs when we made the switch and I assumed the new males would just ignore them and let the female take care of them, but I have now seen several of the new males pick up where the old males left off and start actively tending to the eggs. They saw unattended eggs and went “alright I guess these are mine now”
you gotta get them a "the father that stepped up" coffee mug or something
3DS found with erosion and barnacles found while diving
some octopus had 900 hours in Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and you just fuckin stole his 3DS
Female one btw
okay this is really fascinating to me bc I feel like what they're each picking up from each other is "this woman fails to meet the standards of hetero womanhood" - none of them look like the lead of a romcom, none of them look like an instagram model. passing each other on the street they won't look that closely, but when scrutinizing the image, they pick up on these "failures" and interpret them as deliberately signaling disinterest in male attraction. the secret of course is that no one can meet these standards because they're fake; instagram models and movie actresses are staged and edited.
of course the creator probably got some "straight" responses and edited them out but it's interesting right? that wearing a leopard print top or being the "wrong" body shape pings whatever passes for a gaydar on straight people? that women in t-shirts without a full face of makeup are not performing enough femininity to be "real (straight) women"? the unprompted transvestigation is not unrelated from the distinction of who is a real straight woman.

if youre in the US (especially the northeast + michigan) i would avoid bagged salads/greens and generally wash your produce very thoroughly unless you want the diarrhea parasite
Michigan is experiencing its largest outbreak of a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea. Nearly 1,000 people have been diagnosed
this is not life-threatening, but also who wants weeks of diarrhea and a fucking parasite in them lol. if you suspect you've already had this and it's passed, i would see a doctor. you might need an antiparasitic anyway. if you're actively sick, see a doctor and they might be able to prescribe medication to help you get over it faster.
try to avoid eating raw vegetables, scrub fruit with a produce brush and rinse thoroughly with water. again, don't bother with premade greens or bagged salads. if you buy lettuce, remove the outer 2-3 layers of leaves.
there are UNVERIFIED rumors that the greens have been linked to a company that sources to taco bell. some locations have been actively pulling fresh ingredients like lettuce, avocado, and pico de gallo to mitigate the threat, so i would avoid any products from them just in case. considering how vast supply chains are, i'd be wary of any fast food greens in general for now.
also note this is a PARASITIC infection. most diarrhea-causing pathogens you expect to contaminate your greens are bacteria (e.g. e. coli and salmonella), which are a different domain of organism altogether. cyclospora is a protozoan, which is bigger and more complicated than a bacteria (for reference, malaria is also caused by a protozoan). bacterial diarrhea can be dangerous, but you might also expect to weather it and survive unscathed. do NOT fuck with PARASITIC contamination. you should be scared of this one!
Another note: YOU CAN'T WASH IT OFF!
Only high temperatures will kill cyclospora. It resides in what is like a shell, which is highly resistant to water and most cleaning chemicals. The substance it uses to cling to food is so strong we don't even fully know what its limits are. It may be best to avoid fruits and veggies you can't cook. Scrubbing only works if done hard enough and on foods with no hiding places (Like cucumbers and grapes). Peeling the skin off is your best bet at avoiding it however, scrubbing is not guaranteed.
Thank you OP for posting! Usually washing does work on most sicknesses, just not this one.
me: im disabled and have limits
the smartest most intelligent guy in the world with the most hugest dick ever like so big, like the biggest dick ever, man and also soooo intelligent and thoughtful and just so so intelligent: have you tried pushing yourself?
from my own experience and also from what i hear from others, the issue seems to stem from a fundamental misunderstanding of how i know my limits. i know because i have discovered and tested them. i push them sometimes, carefully. and occasionally i get ok results or at least nothing bad happens. but sometimes something does happen, so i MUST respect my limits.
but when i talk about disability to abled people, they assume its just a bad attitude. like ive defaulted to a "i cant" attitude. and that stems from a fundamental mistrust of disabled people, and the cultural grift of acting like bad things can only exist in the mind. yes i know this is old news. anyways.
