Valeria Luiselli, from Faces in the Crowd (tr. Christina MacSweeney)
[Text ID: It’s a ghost story. Is it frightening? No, but it’s a bit sad.]
Saiba, 1858
“In my heart I love her all the time.”
— F. Scott Fitzgerald / The Great Gatsby
When Bukowski said “We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.”
E. E. Cummings, The Complete Poems: 1904-1962

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”
Pablo Neruda, 100 Love Sonnets
"You can't love someone unless you love yourself first". Bullshit.
I have never loved myself.
But you.
Oh God, I loved you so much
I forgot what hating myself felt like.

don’t say that you love me
i’ll take it too far
an innocent splinter
turned permanent scar
tell me i’m wicked
unlock the bell jar
just don’t say that you love me
i’ll take it too far
30 September 2020
you told me one hundred and eighteen items
compose the universe
and we are all them, and they are all us
that water was one away
from turning poison, and likewise
oxygen two away from deadly
and i’m certain if i could have anything in the world
it would be those two atoms
so i could say i took your breath away

29 September 2020
i used to count the days in
steps taken, in
glances stolen, in
words pricking my ears
measured warmth of the sun by
the minutes she revolved around me, in
the fiery intimacy of her arms on
my skin
and of the moon who watches over
her beloved earth amid
the stars, gave no courtesy but
locked eyelids and wandering dreams
the world twirls rapidly like
a top on the pavement and
i am the child whose joy is
its purpose
spin, spin, spin for me until
i become the gravity. despite
the force acquired, found, below
i fall—down, down, down
i mark each day out
now in air exhaled out,
in hands stretched out,
in thoughts beyond their maker
