labor abuses are still happening and it is worse than before because when you had a 22-episode seasons you had more workers and those workers had robust unions. you also had stability and consistent work. and because of the consistent work, your employer was more obligated to provide you with benefits. the television landscape had syndication which meant residuals, which is money you will get for the rest of your life. dante basco is on tiktok doing residual check lottery to show how much he gets from working on shows in the 90's that are still paying him today. this doesn't exist for current industry workers.

the current system still has obscenely long hours and poor pay, but the studios and the streamers like it because it costs them less money to make. there's no consistency in crew or in the writers room because every contract is season by season and you have to wait years in between. you might not even work on that show again because your gigs keeping yourself afloat that you're doing in the long hiatus may conflict. which works in the favor of the holder of the purse strings because you can't ask them for more pay if you're unable to renew your contract.
