I recently achieved a major financial goal without realizing it, and it feels very alien.

Because of my career title, people usually assume I’m a lot better off than I am. But the thing is, I worked very low wage nonprofit jobs in my 20s before law school, then I was in school (and debt), and then I made less than the salary of a first year teacher in my area for several years as a public interest attorney.* Oh, and I took the bar thrice, failed it twice, and moved cross country twice in a two year span.

Anyway, this is all to say: I was entirely, 100% broke at 31. And now I’m not at 37, and am in fact pretty secure and on track to become very secure, even if I can’t afford to buy a house any time soon. But I don’t know how to shake the sense of precarity that I have lived with throughout my adult life, and I don’t know if I ever will.

*Which, to be clear, no regrets because the work and the people were amazing. But it wasn’t sustainable financially.

Sparrow, my girlfriend’s delightful pet, with whom she often plays or holds to her chest, to whom she gives her fingertip as you peck away, and whose sharp bites she is wont to provoke whenever it pleases the object of my glistening desire to play some dear little game (it’s a small relief for her longing, I think, so that her profound passion might quieten down). Oh – if only I could play with you as she does, and alleviate the troubles of my melancholy mind!

Here, Catullus considers Lesbia’s pet sparrow in a playful and charming poem. In true Catullan style, there is an acute corporeal focus at the start of the poem, with a decidedly erotic description of Lesbia’s play with her pet bird. Indeed, it has been suggested that passer (sparrow) might be directly representative of the genitalia of Catullus or even of Lesbia, but I’ll leave it to you to decide how explicit you think Catullus is being here!

I’ve spent a not small amount of time thinking about how the small classical high school I attended was founded by right wing ideologues, presumably with the aim of teaching Latin to raise up good traditionalist Catholic republicans.

Anyway, like 70% of the stuff we read was poetry about some guy’s mistress’s sparrow which was also maybe actually his dick, and I just think that’s beautiful ❤️.

Coming up for air after a month with a lot of transition! Wrapped up old job, went back to family cabin in Pinetop, went to Phoenix, came back home, Loretta ran a corgi derby, I ran a sprint triathlon, started a new job in a big fancy skyscraper up on Bunker Hill. Crashing at home for the first time in a minute and wow am I tired!

Sometimes I get really homesick and sad about the thought that if I have kids, they probably won’t grow up in Phoenix. But then I remember that Phoenix has changed, and that Phoenix of the 90’s doesn’t exist anymore, and if it does, it’s in Tucson or Albuquerque these days. Anyway, you can’t step in the same river twice, etc., etc.

Watching Eddington and I can’t explain how thoroughly and utterly true this movie is to the rural Southwest, specifically eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. If you’ve spent any meaningful time in somewhere like Show Low or Globe or Las Cruces or Silver City it’s a weird and perfect period piece.
