Tips for Making Life Work
1. Focus on doing one thing at a time. Tackling multiple activities may seem more efficient, but giving one task your complete attention is actually more productive in the end. It also cuts down on your levels of stress.
2. Slow down and enjoy the journey. Whatever youâre doing is important right now. Donât wish that it was over â and try and make it fun.
3. Stop being such a perfectionist. Donât stress out over details and impressing everyone.
4. Learn to delegate to others: take the pressure off yourself. Perhaps other people wonât do the job as well. But thatâs how people grow â so why not give them that chance â and spend your own time doing things that youâd prefer to do.
. Donât always be waiting for the other shoe to drop. Lots of people spend their lives terrified of what might happen â and most of the time things work out to be just fine. Thus, theyâre worrying for nothing when they could be having fun!
6. Focus on what you have, not what you wish you had. All of us have things we can be grateful for. Not everything is awful âand lifeâs not always bad. And if you change your focus to what youâre thankful for, youâll find you feel much happier, and worry a lot less.
7. If things go wrong, just shrug your shoulders and smile. Remind yourself that life goes on - so donât wreak your life wishing things were different or regretting what youâve done. Also, things might work out next time. Tomorrowâs a new day.
âRelationships will not always be 50/50. Most days, they will be. But there are going to be bad days. A relationship without bad days is almost impossible. There might be days where you will only be giving 30%, and he will have to make up for the other 70%. There may even be days where youâll be giving your all, the full 90%, and he will only give you back the rest of the 10%, but the next day might be perfectly 50/50 again. Relationships are about teamwork; about constantly supporting each other no matter what it takes. There will be days where the job of supporting the other will fall completely on you, and there will be days where all you can do is sit there and be supported. The problem arises when the role of the supporter is played consistently by the same person.â

Stop Romanticizing Mental Illness
Depression is not: staring wistfully out the window and singing softly to yourself
Depression is: having bad breath because you donât have the energy to brush your teeth even though you know itâs bad for you
Anxiety is not: a cute little stutter and smile when presenting in front of the class
Anxiety is: crying so hard that you throw up and lay on the bathroom floor shaking and exhausted because of the way your friend said âokayâ before they hung up
Bulimia is not: a fat kid who isnât dedicated enough to go full anorexic but is still trying to lose weight
Bulimia is: a raw throat and puffy cheeks from vomiting so much, and smelling like cinnamon bile because you tried to cover up the smell with a stick of gum
OCD is not: re arranging the books in your bookshelf so that they all stand in order from shortest to tallest
OCD is: digging holes in your skin with your nails because thereâs something there that shouldnât be and no matter how deep you dig at that spot you canât get the badness out
Anorexia is not: a beautifully willowy girl refusing a cupcake, and instead eating a salad
Anorexia is: wiping ranch off of a lettuce leaf because you canât eat that otherwise youâll be even more fat and disgusting and everyone will hate you
Self injury is not: your lover kissing your scars and telling you that youâre still beautiful
Self injury is: being afraid to look in the mirror because your own body is a constant reminder that youâre not strong enough and would rather bleed than feel
please stop romanticizing things that ruin lives
Right now, Iâm sifting through 50+ applications for a new entry-level position. Hereâs some advice from the person who will actually be looking at your CV/resume and cover letter:
âYou must include a cover letterâ does not mean âwrite a single line about why you want this positionâ. If you canât be bothered to write at least one actual paragraphs about why you want this job, I canât be bothered to read your CV.
Donât bother including a list of your interests if all you can think of is âsocialising with friendsâ and âlistening to musicâ. Everyone likes those things. Unless you can explain why the stuff you do enriches you as a person and a candidate (e.g. playing an instrument or a sport shows dedication and discipline) then I honestly donât care how you spend your time. I wonât be looking at your CV thinking âhuh, they havenât included their interests, they must have noneâ, Iâm just looking for what you have included.
Even if you apply online, I can see the filename you used for your CV. Filenames that donât include YOUR name are annoying. Filenames like âCV - mediaâ tell me that youâve got several CVs you send off depending on the kind of job advertised and that you probably didnât tailor it for this position. â[Full name] CVâ is best.
USE. A. PDF. All the meta information, including how long you worked on it, when you created it, times, etc, is right there in a Word doc. PDFs are far more professional looking and clean and mean that I canât make any (unconscious or not) decisions about you based on information about the file.
I donât care what the duties in your previous unrelated jobs were unless you can tell me why theyâre useful to this job. If you worked in a shop, and youâre applying for an office job which involves talking to lots of people, donât give me a list of stuff you did, write a sentence about how much you enjoyed working in a team to help everyone you interacted with and did your best to make them leave the shop with a smile. I want to know what makes you happy in a job, because I want you to be happy within the job Iâm advertising.
Does the application pack say who youâll be reporting to? Can you find their name on the company website? Address your application to them. Itâs super easy and shows that you give enough of a shit to google something. 95% of people donât do this.
Tell me who you are. Tell me what makes you want to get up in the morning and go to work and feel fulfilled. Tell me what youâre looking for, not just what you think Iâm looking for.
I will skim your CV. If you have a bunch of bullet points, make every one of them count. Make the first one the best one. If itâs not interesting to you, itâs probably not interesting to me. Iâm overworked and tired. Make my job easy.
âI work well in a team or individuallyâ okay cool, you and everyone else. If the job means youâll be part of a big team, talk about how much you love teamwork and how collaborating with people is the best way to solve problems. If the job requires lots of independence, talk about how you are great at taking direction and running with it, and how you have the confidence to follow your own ideas and seek out the insight of others when necessary. I am profoundly uninterested in cookie-cutter statements. I want to know how you actually work, not how a teacher once told you you should work.
For an entry-level role, tell me how youâre looking forward to growing and developing and learning as much as you can. I will hire genuine enthusiasm and drive over cherry-picked skills any day. You can teach someone to use Excel, but you canât teach someone to give a shit. It makes a real difference.
This is my advice for small, independent orgs like charities, etc. We usually donât go through agencies, and the person reading through the applications is usually the person who will manage you, so it helps if you can give them a real sense of who you are and how youâll grab hold of that entry level position and give it all youâve got. This stuff might not apply to big companies with actual HR departments - itâs up to you to figure out the culture and what theyâre looking for and mirror it. Do they use buzzwords? Use the same buzzwords! Do they write in a friendly, informal way? Do the same! And remember, 95% of job hunting (beyond who you know and flat-out nepotism, ugh) is luck. If you keep getting rejected, itâs not because you suck. You might just need a different approach, or it might just take the right pair of eyes landing on your CV.
And if you get rejected, itâs worthwhile asking why. Youâve already been rejected, the worst has already happened, thereâs really nothing bad that can come out of you asking them for some constructive feedback (politely, informally, âif it isnât too much troubleâ). Pretty much all of us have been hopeless jobseekers at one point or another. We know itâs shitty and hard and soul-crushing. Friendliness goes a long way. Even if itâs just one line like âyour cover letter wasnât inspiring" at least you know where to start.
And seriously, if you have any friends that do any kind of hiring or have any involvement with that side of things, ask them to look at your CV with a big red pen and brutal honesty. I do this all the time, and the most important thing I do is making it so their CV doesnât read exactly like that of every other person who took the same âhow-to-get-a-jobâ class in school. If your CV has a paragraph that starts with something like âI am a highly motivated and punctual individual whoââ then oh my god I AM ALREADY ASLEEP.
Very good post thanks for this.
Excellent advice for building and submitting job application documents.
This is the first good resume advice post Iâve seen on this site. Much better advice than the âlists of active verbs to useâ and âhere are resume templatesâ. Follow this advice.

What iâve learned from college thus far
Stop studying the night before. I have noticed that if i keep forcing myself to learn until last minute (which itâs not gonna happen, you know what you have been processing for a while not just right before they hand the paper sheets) i start doubting myself more
Go with an âi donât care anymoreâ attitude to the exam. This one is my fave. With this i mean letting go of every single worry you may have of failing in that moment (not ignoring your books the whole semester) If you donât care about failing thereâs no tension or stress during the exam, therefore you will be able to think more clearly than under pressure.
Figure out your minimum hours of sleep. I learned that i need at least 5 hours to function properly. Find yours and use it in your favor.
Relationships with classmates. You probably will only see your friends in some classes or just one, dont let this unmotivate you and not attend to lectures!! Everyone is asleep and no one will think youâre awkward for sitting alone. Donât force friendships or try acting like someone youâre not, people can see it and repells them.
Relationships with teachers. Canât stress this enough, if youâre gonna put effort in creating a bond with someone in college, it has to be your teachers. Try getting there early and pick a seat in the front, make questions via email or in person, if youâre shy like me wait until the end of the lecture and talk to the teacher instead of asking out loud.
Learn from failure. Donât waste precious time giving yourself a hard time, it wonât make you any smarter. Pay attention to details and correct them for the next time, thatâs how champs do it AND YOUâRE ONE OF THEM!
Relaxing. I know how guilty you feel when itâs been days and you havenât looked at your notes, but hey we all go through that. Itâs important to disconnect a little sometimes and come back with a %100 battery instead of a %35, am i right? Just donât let the relaxation become 2 weeks or a whole month.
Hope these few tips may help you if you need them âĄ

types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize youâve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if youâre feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you canât seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. itâll help bring you back.
if thereâs something else going on in your life and you canât get it off your mind: write down whatâs going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. itâll help you work things out.
if youâre just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and youâll hit REM and youâll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if thereâs a crash course video online about it or draw out what youâre trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you wonât shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they wonât absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend whoâs not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.
health tips for ppl with periods
okay so I know Iâve been advertising health tips for students but this one is specifically motivation for ppl who menstruate!! I honestly had no idea how MUCH making a few simple changes to my lifestyle made my load not only lighter but I have yet to experience period cramps and Iâm three days in.Â
advice:
have one meal a day be a MASSIVE salad!! In mine I include mixed leafy greens, usually ethically caught tuna, tomatoes, carrots, avocado or a healthy source of fat and hereâs what truly helped my gut DRIZZLING IT WITH A SQUEEZE OF LEMON AND SOME APPLE CIDER VINEGAR!! (honestly itâs crazy how much this has helped my skin, bloating and really everything)
Drink ya damn water!!! Since I started drinking warm water with every meal and heaps in between! My cramps! HAVE PRACTICALLY GONE!!!!!Â
Vitamin C girl! I actually started making âjuiceâ with a third of a grapefruit, half an orange, one kiwi fruit and half a lemon all in a food processor or blender with some ice and water and this has helped my energy levels, fought off a cold, protected me from legit all my sick friends AND HELPED WITH MY PERIOD!
NO PROCESSED SUGAR IN THE LEAD UP TO YOUR PERIOD!!! I see you with your mars bar!! put the mars bar down and get some fruit! I get the temptation but honestly, your body will be thanking you for this one. Avoid processed foods as well and keep it simple, trust me, you wonât regret it.
EXERCISE WHILE ON YOUR PERIOD honestly helps so much, I know you donât feel like it, I know you just want to stay curled up with a heat pack but this will help. Try it out, doesnât have to be anything intense, just get yourself moving for a little bit!
and thatâs all iâve been doing but Iâve gone from having really heavy loads and doubled over in pain for a week a month do being able to function somewhat normally! (p.s. I am not a medical practitioner or an expert and this is just the stuff Iâve figured out works for me. No guarantees it will work for everyone but, i mean, itâs worth a shot!)
push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.
push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.
get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.
stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.
buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.
buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.
strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.
organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you donât want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.
have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.
push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dogâs behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.
message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you donât follow through. push yourself to follow through.
think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.
become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.
lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasnât a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.
This is all really good advice for dealing with long term depression and anxiety. Itâs not gonna magically cure you, but Iâve pushed myself to incorporate a few of these things into my day to day routine and it helps
you know I once googled how very organized housewives kept their homes super clean. And one thing they suggested was, if a task can be done in less than 2 minutes, do it right away.
And I have to think about this very often when depression tells me to delay doing things, if it tells me something is too much work right now etc.
If I can do it in less than 2 minutes I can do it no matter how exhausting it seems.
Thatâs what I tell myself. And it works!
I get more done and after 2 minutes I usually realize the pain doing this thing is not so horrible as my brain suggested. And then I keep going and expand the task and get real work done, holy shit
ThatâsâŚ. actually brilliant. Two minutes is so short, itâs relatively an easy amount of time to FORCE yourself to work on something, even when youâre just completely deflated.
What works really really well for me is to compound annoying tasks that donât require much thought with something actually pleasant. It took a long time to find the actual pleasant thing, but with audiobooks I can actually end up looking for chores to do because I want to continue listening to the book, and it doesnât combine well with anything except the most mindless work.
Thatâs how I cleaned my bathroom top to bottom two weeks ago, after barely being able to pick up empty loo rolls from the floor forâŚwell, months.

*although i did what i did, i always recommend that you consider recovery*
EATING:
- i never ate more than 800 calories a day. (1,000 if i was really fatigued, as i did school sports)
- i always ate breakfast every day
- i kept my lunch under 200 calories
- i kept my breakfast under 200 calories
- i didnât really count calories for dinner
- after school, if i was hungry i always had a piece of fruit as a snack
- i drank 3L of water every day
- drank a cup of green tea everyday
EXERCISE/ACTIVITY:
- i did school sports, i ran track. this would last 1-2 hours. this was 5 days a week.
- at night, i did ab and thigh gap workouts i found on youtube. i did about 2-3 of each and did them twice through.
- i didnt do any extra running on weekends, but i did do the ab and thigh gap workouts
OTHER:
- i never fasted (yes, really)
- i went (and still am) vegan
- if i binged, i would do some extra cardio, but would just get back on track for the most part
- i refused any food offered to me
- i weighed myself and took measurements 1-2 times a week
i lost about 20 pounds in 1.5-2 months this way!
thatâs all i did, if i remember anything else, iâll add it! again, please stay safe lovelies.
