resigned to becoming a weeb for the sake of gaining some fluency in japanese
i’m on the gambling episode now. Decent fight scenes, good story. love the development of the relationship between im han-rin and bong geun-dae. that’s shaping up to be a “she fell first, he fell harder,” which i love.
my main issue with this episode is the treatment of gambling addiction. for those unaware, gambling is one of the most difficult addictions to overcome. people become addicted to the rush of winning and, like geun-dae, become convinced that they can baat the odds on a rigged game. casinos make bank exploiting hubris; a neverending cycle continues on.
then why does this show treat the kids as malicious actors? being young and a man are both noted risk factors for this disorder. this does not excuse the lying and manipulation of others. they were wrong and made bad choices. i just have a problem with their addiction being characterized as “making the choice to gamble again and again.” clearly the writer knows that addiction is not a choice, given the compassion displayed when illustrating the plight of the drug-addicted middle schooler in the previous episode. yet, the kid bewitched by flashing colors and light does not get the same treatment.
i feel for the parents they have endured great hardships due to their son. i hope we see these characters again, for a brief glimpse of a better life.
started watching teach you a lesson. i don’t have the words to fully explain this, but the premise feels so conservative to me. instead of addressing systemic issues that led to these violent, manipulative actions from children, the erpb simply drop in, “punish” the bad actors, and sashay away. in the end, only the legal code changes into a more punitive and unforgiving framework for policing behavior.
idk, it all feels very carceral to me.
now, don’t misunderstand me, i’ll probably keep watching. it is satisfying to see a bully get what’s coming to them. i like all the characters and their interpersonal dynamics. it’s not a bad show, technically speaking. i think i’m too woke to fully get into it.

lately, watching kdrama feels like viewing a glamorous dinner party from my makeshift shelter in the homeless encampment across the street in gilded age new york city. where are all the normal people who live in normal apartments
Panjin Red Beach is located in the north east of Beijing and is appropriately called this due to the seaweed which turns to a bright red colour in Autumn. It has become known as the “home of the cranes” and is the home to 260 different types of birds, including the endangered Crown Canes and Blacak Beaked Gulls, and 399 different types of wild animals.

Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

anytime i see chemistry between two coworkers, i think of that video by @/vanessadomslife on tiktok where she says that creative chemistry is often mistaken for romantic chemistry.
i’m watching grande maison tokyo on netflix and i can’t help but notice the chemistry btw obana and rinko. they work so well together but seem totally uninterested in each other outside of their shared interest. i really believe that vanessa was onto something here
everything you're debunking i'm rebunking it
