“Doesn’t sound like you’re all too fond either.” Sylvie noted, not that she blamed the woman. Having a loved one in danger or being the loved one in danger sounded like frustrating crime. “I suppose they do, if anyone wants something bad enough they make it happen.” She knew from personal experience how easily that could occur. Or not so easily, but stubbornly. “Superman… I think I’ve heard of that one, actually.” A news report it’d been, though Sylvie didn’t remember the details only his name attached to it. “A positive relationship I’m inferring?”

Lois smiled faintly and shrugged. “Yeah, I could definitely do without it,” she murmured. “I’m sure when people see it on the news, it looks very cinematic and all. But honestly, it’s a lot of down time, and then it’s really, really stressful, and there is basically no in between.” She smiled when she said that she’d heard of Superman. “He’s one of the big ones,” she agreed mildly. Lois laughed a little. “Absolutely,” she said. “He’s a good man, apart from being, you know...” Lois smiled a little. “Super.”

“I don’t really read newspapers. Sorry.” Billy said sheepishly. He should probably be more aware of events going on in the world, but it was hard enough learning the entire world of magic with Strange. “Thank you for the understanding. I don’t really know what i’m doing.” Billy said with a laugh. “Not with the- whatever, or in life.”

Billy was lucky that she decided not to pry, since the last thing he needed right now was the Avengers knocking at his door. Even though it would be cool to meet the Avengers, they probably wouldn’t be too happy about him doing small miracles in the streets of Gotham. “Have you been here long? I just moved here.”

Lois gave a dramatic little gasp and put her hand over her heart, as if wounded, before she flashed Billy a smile. “It’s okay, journalism is in transition,” she said, with a grin. “I also have a blog, because I’m with the times. My editor Perry just refuses to publish an online edition. He says if people want the news, they’re gonna have to pick up a paper. I’ve tried explaining to him that it’s not 1974 and he isn’t Bob Woodward.” 

She thought about it for a second. “I’ve been here for...a couple years now, I think? Around there. Honestly, living in Gotham, you really kind of latch onto the idea that time is a social construct. It all kind of blends together.” She paused, frowning a little. “Not to be the mom friend, but how old are you, anyway?” He looked a little young to be living on his own.

           Jon sat on his mom’s couch, eyes fixated on the carpet that lay across the floor below. He chewed on the inside of his cheek to keep his smile at bay, thinking about his date with Dory. It had gone so well, and he couldn’t stop thinking about it. The next one had to be just as good if not better, so he came to Lois for advice. “Grandma said I could bring her back to the farm, but I want to do something different. It went well, but it doesn’t feel right to repeat it.”

Lois couldn’t help but grin as she watched Jon consider the matter at hand. She knew him well enough to know that he was struggling to keep a smile of his own at bay -- on top of which, he looked particularly like his father when he did that. She thought about it for a second. “Maybe you don’t really have to take her anywhere,” she said. “I’m sure she just wants to be around you. Take her to a rooftop and have a picnic overlooking the city. Bring her favorite foods, but make the dessert something you love that she hasn’t had before, so she can try it with you.”

The snort was intriguing, did this woman not think well of those so called superheroes? Sylvie wondered if they deemed themselves the name or if it was chosen for them. “That sounds tedious.” She frowned. “If kidnapping a loved one was an effective strategy I doubt any heroes would be left. I suppose this is why some insist on masks?”

Lois laughed at the woman’s blunt words, shrugging her shoulders. “It’s pretty damn effective when it’s your loved one,” she said. “Or when you’re the loved one, believe me. I have personal experience.” She shrugged. “I guess,” she said. “People have a way of finding out that kind of information anyway, though. Most people don’t know Superman’s real identity, but they know I’m connected to him.”

Lara sighed and put her face in her hands. She didn’t know why she was so nervous. She looked back at her mother and smiled a bit, “Sorry, sometimes I tend to beat around the bush when I’m nervous. I’m your daughter. From the future. I followed Jon and Jordan here ‘cause they were taking so long and I– Well, I wanted to see my dad again.”

Lois’s eyebrows shot up as the young woman spoke. “My--?” She tried to gauge how old she was in relation to how old the adult version of the twins were, but she supposed that was a losing game. She could be from any timeline or universe. “I don’t know where he is,” she admitted. Assuming Clark really was this girl’s father, and she was her mother. “Last I heard, he was doing some superhero-y stuff in space.”

Linda winked at Lois, glad that she was now able to enjoy her chocolate milk. Wrinkling her nose, Linda looked at the 90s looking computers. It was a little worrying that Gotham seemed so behind with technology. Maybe she shouldn’t have moved here, but she couldn’t let herself get into that mindset. She needed to stay positive if she was going to survive in this grim city. “Maybe we should do an article on that,” she suggested, sipping her drink. “Without us, the billionaires wouldn’t be getting any recognition. It’s time they gave back. They’re sitting in huge mansions, drinking their champagne for breakfast, while we have computers that aren’t even worth stealing. That’s why the baddies here never target this place.”

Lois giggled as Linda winked at her, happily taking a sip of her chocolate milk. She hadn’t given the stuff much thought since she was a kid, until having the twins, but they were both feral for choccy milk as they called it. And admittedly now she was pretty feral for it, too, having gotten into the habit of drinking it with them. She grinned as Linda spoke. “Yeah, we can post it on my blog,” she said. She paused, and in a stage whisper, she added: “It has a higher readership than the Gazette, anyway.” In a normal voice, she went on: “Plus that way Perry can’t give himself an ulcer yelling at us. His HMO has really gotta be screwing him over by now.” She laughed. “Yeah, it’s a little insulting, isn’t it?”

Lara felt bad for impeding on her mother’s time with her brothers. She almost lost her nerve, but it was so nice to see her like this. Full and happy. “I… uh… Yeah. And… you?” She said with a nervous smile. She looked down at her little big brothers and shook her head. “It’s weird. Seeing them like this. Have they met their younger selves? Or would that mess up the time stream…?” Lara had a habit of rambling when she was nervous.

Lois raised her eyebrows, shooing the twins behind her with one hand. “Who are you, exactly?” she said, folding her arms across her chest. This day had clearly and suddenly changed into something unusual, and she personally was not a big fan of surprises. “And how do you know about time streams?”

What a tiny child. baby? Toddler? Rita didn’t know the small humans enough to know which one this was. The closest she’d known to a child was Garfield and he was pretty old when he initially came to the manor as well. There was another one, probably the same age as the first, standing by. Very mature of the little one. “Don’t mention it.” Rita waved off the apology. It was something Rita wished someone would have done for her back in the day, those certain days when she just needed to be alone and didn’t want fame on her shoulders. “But you have a sleepy one. I understand.” Rita spoke and offered a small grin. “Hello Lois, Jordan and Jon. I am Rita Farr, and the pleasure is all mine.”

Lois rubbed Jordan’s back as he settled more comfortably into her lap, and she hauled Jon up into the free chair next to hers. She always felt better with him in her view, with the both of them in her view. Jon certainly had no problem taking care of himself, even at two years old, and she knew he would do anything to protect his brother -- even at two years old. Still, she felt better this way. “Rita Farr?” she repeated, wondering why the name struck a bell in her memory. “Oh! Like the old Hollywood actress? I loved her movies growing up.”

Garth surfaced near the Gotham’s pier, trying to shake the water out of his hair as he walked onto shore. This ‘rising from the depths’ thing was always awkward, always included him trying to play it cool while walking out of the ocean, and never managed to look good. He shook his arms, knowing it was a matter of time before he was dry again, but just hating the feeling of whatever residual Gotham grime coated his body. Garth made a face as he looked up, making eye contact with someone on the rocky shore. 

“Just going for a light swim. In the middle of the night. No big deal.” He said with an easy smile.

Lois just looked at him, her eyebrows slightly lifted so that her expression was one of mild incredulity. “Uh-huh,” she said. “Right.” It wasn’t like he was the first Atlantean she had met, by any means -- although she supposed there were other people who could easily rise out of the water like it was no big deal. She was fairly certain that both Clark and Diana could hold their breath underwater for a very long time, and they both had pretty good stamina. So it wasn’t particularly unusual for her to interact with someone who could clearly survive beneath the depths, but at the same time, the water in the Harbor had to be absolutely foul. 

“You should probably shower,” she commented dryly. “At least three times, I would say.”

“Leave that poor woman alone.” Rita proclaimed. She didn’t often involve herself in altercations but with it going on right before her eyes she couldn’t sit by and simply watch. Plus she was somewhat bored. The young man had been bothering the woman who was there with not one but two little tiny children. “Would you like me to call the authorities?” Was Gotham PD 911? Rita didn’t know but the threat seemed to do the trick and he stopped hassling the woman. “What a barbarian.” Rita sniped with a glare in the retreated man’s direction.

Jordan was in Lois’s lap, hiding his face against her shoulder with his arms around her neck, and she had Jon anchored against her side, where he was standing by her chair. She had been sitting at an outdoor restaurant when the guy started harassing her, recognizing her from the paper. “Thanks,” she said, absently running her fingers through Jordan’s mop of curls. “I would have torn him a new one, but...” She smiled and gestured to her kids. “I’m Lois Lane,” she said, with a little smile. “This is Jordan, and Jon.”

Lois admitted that Diana could convince her to do anything, and a soft laugh left her lips. “I promise to only use my powers for good. I do think you should work from home today, though. I could fly us somewhere fancy for lunch,” she said, trying to sweeten the deal. She wanted to spend as much time with the other woman as she could. Diana was going to miss her terribly while she was away. Reaching up, she ran her thumb over Lois’s lower lip, which was jutting out. “I will be back before you know it, love. It will be a solo mission, yes. I can handle it, there is no need to worry the others. It’s more of a me problem, anyway. Cleaning up my own messes is important to me,” Diana frowned, then stood up from the edge of the bed, planting a kiss on Lois’s lips. ”Everything will be fine.”

Lois laughed softly as Diana spoke, knowing already she would say yes without Diana having to add a fancy lunch to the mix. She was happy just to spend time with her, no matter what they were doing. “Well, I would have said yes even if it was just PB&J on the menu, but since you threw in a fancy meal, I can’t say no,” she teased. Her concern only grew as Diana spoke. “What mess? Can I do anything to help?” she said, wrapping her arms around Diana’s waist and leaning up to kiss her. She was a little worried with how vague Diana was being. She wondered if Diana wasn’t telling her everything in order to spare her concern, but that was only making her more concerned. 

“So the…” Sylvie pondered for a moment trying to remember the proper title. “Superheroes, I heard they’re ‘important’ here?” On Midgard, it appeared. / @fallengothamhq​

A light snort fell from Lois’s lips as the woman spoke. “I guess important is the right word, yeah,” she said. “Sometimes people show how important the superheroes are to them by, you know, kidnapping their loved ones or robbing a bank to get their attention. But sure, they’re important.”

“Was I that obvious? I’m sorry,” Diana chuckled, watching as Lois did a twirl in front of her. “You cannot blame me, though. You look beautiful all the time, but there’s just something about you in a tailored suit…” Leaning forward as she sat on the edge of their bed, she reached for Lois’s hands, pulling her towards her. “Must you go to work today? You could just stay here with me and do more twirls,” Diana teased, kissing the back of her fiancée’s hand. “I have some business to take care of for the League soon, I will be gone for a couple of days.”

Lois flashed Diana a grin, letting out a little squeak as Diana pulled her closer, making her smile even more brightly. “Well, I do try to impress sometimes,” she said, with another grin, gazing into Diana’s face. She adored the woman in front of her and she frankly could just stand there and look at her all day, if she was allowed. “Mmm, I think at the very least you could convince me to work remotely,” she said, laughing softly. “You could probably convince me to do just about anything.” She added the qualifier more for her own dignity than anything else. “Oh.” A little pout touched her lips, though it quickly turned to a frown of concern. “Is everything okay? Are you gonna be by yourself?” She didn’t like the idea of Diana being out there with no one to watch her back.

“I don’t want you to see me like this. For anyone to really. I feel like an animal on display.” He sighed placing his head on the door. It was degrading. But at the same time, I think that way Jade’s point. Making him face the consequences of his actions. Rehab was “easier” when you were thousands of miles away and didn’t have to look at the faces of the people you let down. The guilt was worse than any other withdrawal symptom. “I think I’m coming off the other side of it. I still get shakes sometimes though.” He sighed. “How’s Lian? Has she noticed? Is she okay?” he asked.

Lois gave a little shrug as Roy spoke. “What I’m seeing is you working through your problems,” she said. “I can’t imagine how rough it is, but you’re doing the right thing, for you, and Lian, and everybody who cares about you.” She offered him an encouraging smile as he went on, nodding her head. “Is there anything I can do?” She smiled a little. “She’s okay, I think,” she said. “I hope hanging out with the twins helps. God knows they love it.” 

“O-Oh the books? Yeah they’re pretty cool.” Billy said, adjusting the books against his side so they wouldn’t be in any danger off falling out of his arms soon. He knew what she was probably referring to the small miracle he had just performed in broad daylight, but hopefully avoiding the topic would make her abandon it. It probably wasn’t his smartest move he’d made, but at least it was small enough to brush over. Hopefully.

“No, no. I’m sure. I’ve definatley seen your face before.” and Billy didn’t forget anything related to comics. He furrowed his brow a bit as he racked his brain. But, unhelpfully, most of his knowledge of obscure character appearances had been replaced with magic knowledge. “Nevermind. You won’t tell anyone about the…spill, right?”

Lois couldn’t help but smirk at the clear attempt at subterfuge, but she wasn’t going to press him on it. She was a journalist, true, so it was her job to pry, but the kid reminded her of her own sons. Maybe she was getting soft, but she got the feeling that he wasn’t some nefarious weirdo. She had met plenty of those and had a good nose for them. 

She raised her eyebrows as he spoke. “I’m Lois Lane, if that helps,” she said dryly. “Reporter for the Daily Planet, currently at the Gotham Gazette?” She didn’t expect for her name to ring bells at random, but it had seemed like she was familiar to him somehow. She gave a little laugh. “My lips are sealed, promise.”

Kon knew that everyone who loved him were on edge about losing him again. It was hard to forget his death, and the brutal way in which he’d died. He should’ve been more thoughtful and remembered that those around him needed plenty of reassurance. “I’m sorry, ma. I should’ve told you I was visiting grandma and grandpa. Things with Cassie got to me — I just needed to clear my head for a couple of days.” Reaching across the dining table, he took Lois’s hands in his own. “I’ll always come back home. No matter what happens, I’ll always make it back to you and my brothers. Family sticks together.”

Lois bit her lip, her fingers twisting and untwisting together nervously on the tabletop, only stilling when Kon reached across to take them. She was the type of person who didn’t like to give in to her emotions -- she preferred to just keep moving forward, to look after others, rather than make a scene (which sounded ironic considering how often she flagrantly risked her life, but that was for work). “It’s okay,” she said quietly, offering him a bracing smile. “Martha told me when she called to speak to the twins.” She frowned a little. “Is everything okay now?” Lois gave his hands a little squeeze as she spoke. “Family sticks together, always.”
