mcat study tips on vacation.
The semester’s over and you are [finally] on vacation!
*Insert happy dance.*
Then you realize you have to study for the biggest test of your life yet -- the MCAT.
So how do you balance vacation and studying? Read on for some tips!
1. Make flashcards. These handy-dandy cards are incredibly easy to make and take with you! And, as an added benefit, physically writing things down on paper will help you remember/memorize facts better.
2. Make a schedule. Treat MCAT-studying as work; in other words, set time aside to solely focus on your studying. This could be an 8AM to 5PM type-of schedule, after that, you are done for the day! Time to relax, stretch, and hang with friends!
3. Give yourself a one-week break! You deserve it. Take a break to do NOTHING MCAT-related; it will allow you to recollect thoughts, relax, and -- most importantly -- motivate you to keep going.
4. Shopping and waiting in a long line? Study! Make use of your phone and download some MCAT-study apps to kill time in the most effective manner. ANY studying is better than NO studying.
5. Take your studying outdoors. Who says you have to confine yourself to your lonely bedroom to study for this monster-of-a test? If you have allowed yourself enough time to study for the MCAT, you may as well make the most of summer and do some studying on your porch, beach, park, coffee shop, etc. A change of scenery is always nice!
Cheers and happy studying, Janine.

what it’s like to be “pre-med.”
Scary. Just kidding; being “pre-med” means you have embarked on the very long, but grateful journey of serving humanity. So pat yourself on the back – congrats! But, let’s get a little more detailed here: what is “pre-med,” really? Continue reading to find out about my experience studying [pre] medicine … 1. You learn to LEARN every waking second of your day.
Seriously, the learning doesn’t stop. In order to be a successful pre-med student – and later, medical student – you need to condition yourself to learn every moment you can. Courses are hard, and they do not get easier, therefore learning to study well is a vital skill to have.
2. Coffee becomes its own food group.
I am pretty sure I didn’t start drinking coffee until the beginning of my Freshman year in college … which makes a lot of sense. Long hours studying in the library just calls for coffee – it’s natural. Therefore, if you are a high school student thinking you’ll never be one of those coffee-obsessed college students, just wait and see.
3. “Science” will be your middle name.
Throughout your pre-med career, you will take many, MANY science courses, ranging from general chemistry to biochemistry. If you are not a big fan of science but are still interested in becoming a physician, no problem; like many others, you will make it work.
4. Eating at odd hours will become a norm.
This is actually something that resonates with all college students. College/pre-med life is very different from “regular” life, in that greatest priority is set on studying, learning, and going to classes, and everything else comes after – this includes eating. However, it may come with good news that you will become a pro at packing your snacks and lunches to-go.
5. You will fall in love with medicine more and more.
As a pre-med, you will inevitably fall in love with medicine. All of the studying, sleep-sacrifice, and exam-taking will pay off. This, in my honest opinion, is the greatest feature about this track.
If you have a heart for humans and health, are willing to spend a lot of time learning, and are passionate about the overall medical field – this is the right path for you! Are you currently a pre-med or planning to embark on the journey? Share your thoughts and experiences!

mindfulness in the medical world.
By Janine Wolf
Mindfulness is becoming very ‘trendy’ nowadays.
And with good reason. We, as a society, have reached a shifting point in the seemingly endless cycle of stress, rush, and – well – un-mindfulness.
I was watching a TEDx video entitled
“The Practice of Mindfulness”
by Diana Winston (from UCLA), when I realized how the seemingly simple act of being mindful is incredibly vital to being a physician.
Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of your surroundings. Winston mentioned how, at many times while we’re driving, we tend to switch to “auto-pilot.” As you may imagine, that’s very dangerous.
But, have you ever thought of physicians, surgeons, etc. going on “auto-pilot”? That’s dangerous, too.
She mentioned her child’s practice of mindfulness. She would stop and stand in the middle of the road gazing at something utterly mesmerizing in her eyes. She was captivated.
Children, according to Winston, are excellent at being mindful. For all we know, they could be staring at leaves rustling in the wind or listening to water dripping from the faucet – but that’s just it! They master a, sort of, connection with the world that we, as adults, have lost over the years through education and experience (oh the irony).
So, how does this all fit into the grand scheme of being a doctor?
A doctor needs to possess the ability to be present with their patients; in order to figure out the best solution for each of their cases, you need to truly listen and be.
I believe this is why the new (2015) MCAT received an added psychology/sociology section; it comes from the ultimate goal to cultivate mindful doctors and physicians who are, not only smart and quick, but have the ability to resonate with humans.
“Mindfulness” can give modern doctors the edge that may have been absent in the past.
And, because this is a site for millennials, here are some of the top mindfulness apps to download:
1. HEADSPACE
2. The Mindfulness App
3. Buddhify

tumblr seems appropriate.
That’s right, I am moving “THE YELLOW WOLF” to Tumblr.
In order to stay true to TYW’s goal to instigate communication among millennials in medicine, what better platform to use other than Tumblr?
Here, I will share with you stories, pictures, gifs, videos, … and most importantly – inspiration.
Welcome to “a blog for the millennial doctor.”
Cheers, Janine.
