I’ll probably never get around to posting this fic, but I really like this snippet. As the self proclaimed #1 Luffy fan, sometimes I forget how much I love writing Ace and Sabo interactions.
The kid was persistent. Annoying, but persistent. Ace would give him that.
When Sabo arrived at their usual meeting spot, he raised an eyebrow at the disheveled state of him.
“He’s fuckin’ tenacious.”
“Whatever. We’ve got work to do, so don’t fall behind.”
“Yeah yeah. Like hell I’ll fall behind you from this.”
There was no heat behind their banter, and the stress of Dadan, the bandits, and that weird kid faded away in his friend's presence.
They were about to move out when they heard it.
“Ace! Where are you?! Ace!”
They took cover, sharing a look.
“I thought you lost him?” Sabo whispered, voice tinged with frustration.
“I did!”
“Obviously not well enough!”
Sabo shoved Ace’s arm. “Get rid of him!”
“What? No way! I’m not going down there. He’ll just stick to me!” Ace shoved back, the sound of the kid’s shouts getting closer as they quarreled.
“You try losing him then bastard–”
Sabo tilted sideways dangerously as he moved to retaliate against Ace’s latest attack, their grip on each other sending them both plummeting toward the ground. They landed with a thud, Ace’s head screaming as he tried to orient himself. Sabo was under him, metaphorical birds swirling around his head.
Shifting away from his idiot friend, Ace’s eyes found the source of his headache staring at them with starry eyes.
“Ace! You came!” The kid beamed at them. “Awesome! Is that all treasure up there? What’re ya saving for?”
“Shit. Sabo, get up. We gotta deal with this thanks to you.” He stood, kicking Sabo’s stomach.
Sabo groaned, finding his way to his feet and getting in Ace’s face. “How is this my fault? And you don’t have to kick me!”
“Oh! Is this your friend? Hi! I’m Luffy!”
“Shut up!” Ace and Sabo shouted in unison.
