POV: After another exhausting day at work, you and your coworker try to catch up on the World Cup replay, only to fall asleep halfway through.

There's a picture of the squad from the night Olivia and Brian threw a fancy dinner party. Rollins was at a meeting. Nick is there. His smile is bright, genuine, warm. Olivia, Brian, Cragen, and Warner are also in the picture. As Rafael understands it, Cragen's wife had taken it.

It hangs on the wall of Olivia's apartment. At the time of the party, Rafael had a prior commitment and couldn't make it. He doesn't think he would've gone regardless. It seemed like a night for the squad.

It was taken at a time when he wasn't close with Nick. When he hadn't slept in the same bed as him, felt Nick's mouth on him, heard Nick's voice whisper to him in the dead of night, smelled Nick's aftershave, tasted the salt on Nick's skin.

Rafael finds himself looking at the picture every chance he gets, at Nick in the picture. At his smile. He looked so young even though he was just shy of forty at the time. He knows that Nick is a different man in the picture and yet he is also still the man that Rafael loves.

During Nick's next visit, Rafael takes him to Olivia's for dinner. He holds Nick's fingers as they walk to the picture. He looks at Nick then looks at the picture then back at Nick. Nick follows his line of sight and sees himself. He smiles just like he is in the picture.

Rafael cups Nick's jaw. He brushes the corner of his mouth with the pad of his thumb.

Nick gives Olivia his camera. She knows what to do. She takes pictures of them: Nick kissing Rafael's cheek. The two of them hugging. Laughing together. Foreheads pressing together. Doing the prom pose with Rafael spooning Nick. Laughing at the height difference.

nick loves praise, takes on so much responsibility outside of their home it only makes sense that he’d pass the reigns to rafael the second he feels comfortable enough to be so vulnerable. raf has zero objections to this, naturally. but as everyone knows, raf is a bit of a slut. a shameless one that despite his love for pushing nick around and bullying him to his knees still loves a bit of manhandling, choking, whatever tickles his fancy really.

one night after a particularly brutal case, nick comes home anger tight in his shoulders and an attitude not even cuddles and raf’s special hot chocolate could smooth out. typically some heavy petting and special treats get him straightened out, floats him up to that happy places where he’s all suggestible and sweet. but he’s too worked up with a whole lot of displaced anger — he always gets like this with domestic cases. raf suggests taking his anger out on him, and he can see the full body shiver that takes over nick the second it leaves his mouth. but then this little grin quirks at his lip. “maybe I can try? just…just give me orders, please?”

raf pulls nick to cage him against the wall, still takes the lead with all the smooching but he guides his hands to grab at his chest and then his ass; nick’s delighted to feel how much flesh is hiding under those slacks. they take it to the bedroom before they start fucking like animals in the hallway, nick on top, hands either side of raf’s head. this isn’t an unusual position, honestly. raf loves when he rides him, watching the way the muscles in his thick thighs tense as he grinds down on him and the way his face falls into his chest when it gets too much, slobbering all over him. he has to remind himself that’s not what they’re doing here.

clothes are in a pile on the floor quicker than usual, because despite nick’s apprehension to returning to a side of him that never quite felt real, he’s desperate and eager to get all this fizzing out from under his skin. to raf’s surprise, he’s already prepped. the squadroom showers have seen things it never should but he doesn’t regret it, not one bit, especially when he sees raf’s face as his fingers glide inside him with ease. “couldn’t wait for me hm?”

nick’s not really sure where it comes from, but a hand surges forward and wraps around rafael’s throat just slow enough for him to finish his sentence; turns out he doesn’t really need instructions at all. this is where he wants him: impulsive, snappy. all he can do is grin up at him as the familiar feeling of his head starting to swim sends his blood warm. nick obviously doesn’t need any prep, but raf works two fingers in him like his hole was still virgin until he gets impatient and throws his hand from between his legs, promptly lining himself up and impaling himself on rafael all in one go. raf’s hands come up to grip his hips instantly to try hold him still, slow him down because as horny as he is he doesn’t want this over too fast (and secretly, just to get his boyfriend more angry). nick slaps him once on the cheek. there’s hesitation in the way his arm retreats, a glimmer of fear in his eye but the guttural moan he’s only heard from raf a handful of times tells him he’s being good.
