Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in clueless (1995)
things people do in real world dialogue:
• laugh at their own jokes
• don’t finish/say complete sentences
• interrupt a line of thought with a sudden new one
• say ‘uh’ between words when unsure
• accidentally blend multiple words together, and may start the sentence over again
• repeat filler words such as ‘like’ ‘literally’ ‘really’ ‘anyways’ and ‘i think’
• begin and/or end sentences with phrases such as ‘eh’ and ‘you know’, and may make those phrases into question form to get another’s input
• repeat words/phrases when in an excited state
• words fizzle out upon realizing no one is listening
• repeat themselves when others don’t understand what they’re saying, as well as to get their point across
• reply nonverbally such as hand gestures, facial expressions, random noises, movement, and even silence
Excellent sticky note for dialogue writing in fiction.
All of this. I get a lot of compliments on my dialogue and this list pretty much covers what I do (but some of it, I didn’t even realize I did, lol). I highly recommend reading your dialogue aloud (or imagining it in realtime like a movie scene) to see if it feels natural, which is what I do when editing.
my cat is such an asshole but he is so affectionate...it’s like he knows he can do whatever he wants as long as he snuggles up to me later

trying to enjoy the simple life, which i used to love and binge watched when i was like 16, and i just cant! i hate exuberant wealth! its gross!
i have no plans for the evening and my roommate will be out all night so i have the house to myself, a whole tray full of pulled pork sliders from an event at work today, and the whole internet at my disposal. but i really wish i wouldve stopped for some wine before i got home because now im sat on my couch and i dont wanna leaaave
ya ever think about how maybe some media you consumed when your brain was developing hardwired you to think the way that you do now? i think that about vonneguts writing which i think i started reading when i was 15. maybe a bit too young (but i always read whatever the fuck i wanted and no one really seemed to check up on me) but i really think it made me the person i am today
kinda interesting to think about. in a lot of ways, i feel like i raised myself. i was alone a lot of the time, reading. i feel like the things i read and the shows i watched and the music i listened to made me who i am, maybe more than my parents. it’s sad, but i think most of the good things that i like about myself i got from things i discovered myself, and most of the anxieties i got from my family.
i forgive them for it. i think i would have done whatever i wanted anyway. i had the internet, and it led me into a world of impossible to quantify knowledge. i could learn about anything, and so i did. i spent so much time as a kid staying up all night just reading. maybe i’m misremembering it. but i know whenever i had a question about something, i googled it. my mom never gave me a sex talk...i read about it online. i don’t think she could have known that was what was going to happen. we didn’t have that sort of understanding about the internet back then. and they tried to stop me lol. they’d turn off the internet at night. but i’d just load up pages and pages of things to read later (mainly fanfiction...how on brand)
i’m happy for it. i think it gave me a better understanding of the world, in sort of a modern setting. what an interesting world we live in! glad i grew up now, and not in the past or the future. feel like i’m in the perfect precipice of too much technology and not enough.
