I think every aspiring scientist in some point of their education should have to teach a college level class to elementary school children, while making it fun and understandable for said children. Being able to communicate complex ideas to all age ranges is extremely important for science literacy. It’s paramount that a scientist is able to explain their field to anyone who wants to learn. A lack of science communication in the past years has been a factor in many people choosing to ignore and reject science. Science is not exclusive to professionals. Science belongs to us all.

Not only that, but children are smarter than what many adults think. It’s also important to not overly dumb down science to the point where it’s boring to them. I am an average intelligence individual, and by the time I was in middle school I was able to explain the most fundamental concept of the theory of relativity to my peers. It’s not because I was smart, but because I was passionate about the topic. Kids can understand things if you teach the subject in an appropriate way. I was able to teach my nieces multiplication and division at ages 6 and 7. Not because they were some super smart whiz kids, but because I taught them in such a way that they could understand. Knowing complex science topics does not require you to be smart, it requires you to be taught at a level that you can understand and that you can build on. Any one of us can be Einstein.
