Directly addressing the "criticisms," Serkis went on to say that “The Hunt For Gollum” "is somewhat acknowledging that," but won't necessarily be incorporating any of the feedback. I expect very little, if anything, will be said about her Judaism, but that, too, was a fundamental part of her humanity, her desire for stillness and comfort, her longing to find a home, her unseen depth. her Jewish identity was denied her even at her own funeral by those who circled her life yet never seemed to truly understand her, and I feel the least we can do to honor her, and to uplift her spirit and delicate heart, is to insist that this part of her is recognized.

Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
