I love a John Walker who is incredibly socially clueless and has no idea what information would be important to share to people growing close to you.
Example! Once, John randomly packed up some stuff and left for the weekend. The team thought he was going on a solo mission, and upon return when they asked how it went, he was like: "Lol, no I wasn't on a mission. I was in Georgia for me and my mom's (Mrs. Hoskins) birthday. It's on the same day." And the whole team is just looking on in pure HORROR because they just realized they had NO idea what John's birthday was because he NEVER brought it up so they didn't GET anything for him 😭
Or how about the time the team realized how much they LIKED having John around when they brought home some Chinese food? Bucky plopped John's plate of orange chicken down in front of him, which he was VERY picky about when ordering. John took one bite and almost immediately, his mouth started to swell.
After everyone panicked like hell for a good while (Yelena saved the day when she realized that that thing John kept in his pocket that everyone genuinely thought was something for smoking was actually JOHN'S EPI-PEN)
Turns out, he's so picky about his Chinese order because he is deathly allergic to all things sesame and didn't think to bring it up!
The team sat John down after this incident and made him talk about himself for over an hour. They also go to a different Chinese place now and birthdays reside in all calendars in the tower.

The thunder twins cutting and dying their hair at home with varying levels of success, dancing around each other in the bathroom and making a mess, trading stories, laughing, crying, both filmed with the brim with bittersweet nostalgia.
I'm a member of an advanced photography training community. My mentor creates challenges to help demonstrate certain concepts.
This one required shooting a pop-art-style egg photo to show how specular highlights change with hard and soft light.
This was the example image I was to emulate.
A specular highlight is just a direct reflection of the light source.
With hard light, specular highlights are perceived as brighter. To get hard light, the light source must be smaller (or more distant). So the reflection is smaller, but also more concentrated in intensity.
With soft light, the light source is much larger (or closer). So the intensity of the reflection is spread out over a larger area. So it is perceived as dimmer.
Think about looking directly at a flashlight versus shining it against the wall. The same number of photons are involved, but your experience of them is vastly different.
If you are shooting someone with glasses and the light is reflecting brightly, you can move your light much closer to reduce its apparent intensity.
I worked for 10 minutes at a time over a period of 4 days. I got some fake eggs so I wouldn't have to spend energy cooking. Frustratingly, they arrived with a matte finish. They would not take on a specular highlight at all. So I ordered some automotive clear coat and sprayed the fake eggs on my deck.
You may have noticed my context-less egg art on my deck railing in another post. It was drying in the sun.
The clear coat worked well, so I proceeded to glue the egg to some colored construction paper and tape it to the wall in my kitchen.
I don't have a top-down rig to shoot things from above, so I felt this was a creative and low-energy solution.
A bonus aspect of the challenge was to create a Photoshop composite in which I retain the shadows from the hard light example and the gradient specular highlight on the egg yolk. I can't decide if I like that or the soft light version better.
It feels nice to have accomplished something creative. I am struggling so much with boredom as I recover. And doing anything productive is physically challenging. But I've got my birds and now my egg.

in another universe, we are on the road trip that we were looking forward to. your hand is on my thigh, and my hand is caressing your hair while i ask you the silliest questions in an attempt to know you at a surface level. we reach our hotel, get in the bathtub, and talk even more endlessly. you look at me so lovingly to the point where i get red from embarrassment. we slow dance in the kitchen like we have always wanted; to no music, just to the sound of our breathing, or even our hushed giggles to not awaken a sleeping city. we are content, we are happy, and we are where we always wanted to be.
Recently started thinking about Allison Hargreeves again, here’s my ted talk on why she’s an incredibly complex, flawed character and a well-written example of a redemption arc with a character who has made irredeemable decisions.
If Allison Hargreeves has one fan, it’s me.
If Allison Hargreeves has zero fans, it’s because I remembered that umbrella academy seasons three and four exist lol
Allison’s immensely abusive childhood instilled in her that her value was measured by her ability to leverage her superpowers, which include warping reality and overwriting other’s autonomy. Allison carries that over into adulthood and effectively builds her life around it — until the gravity of what’s she done hits her, and it’s not the legal ramifications that give way to this heavy realization.
In S1, when she’s driving through the night in the effort to protect Viktor—if i remember correctly also the first scene we really see Allison alone with her thoughts—she’s overwhelmed with shame, knuckles hard on the steering wheel as memory after memory of her sins hit her, one after another, non-stop, relentless, choking her with that kind of guilt that makes it hard see past your tears or even breathe.
In that scene, the last memory Allison has of using her powers lingers on her stricken expression, her words inescapable, echoing:
I heard a rumor you were in love with me.
She knows that what she has done is unforgivable.
She participated in her father’s abuse of her sibling.
She perpetuated the cycle of abuse on her daughter.
She effectively stole much of her ex-husband’s life—and worse.
And yet she keeps driving.
Even when she hates herself, when she knows the people she wants to love and help either justifiably distrust or are unsafe around her in the wake of her choices, she keeps moving forward.
There’s no guarantee that she’ll be able to save Viktor, or that he’ll even believe her, or that telling him the truth won’t cause more harm to Viktor and their already strained sibling relationship.
There’s no guarantee that she’ll regain visitation or custody of Clair, or that her daughter will forgive her once she understands the magnitude of her mother choosing to use her powers on her.
All she can do is try.
And she works hard to do right by the people she has hurt, even if it may never be enough to change their view of her, and then to the new people that come into her life, even if they may never know the efforts Allison is making to be better than what she was.
In S2 she is thrust into a traumatic situation where her siblings are missing and she is immediately dehumanized, harassed, and narrowly escapes an attempted assault.
Trapped and without her loved ones in the 60’s US deep south, she has every reason to rewrite reality around her.
And yet she doesn’t.
If ever there was a use case for the moral use of her powers, it would be to set just an unjust world. But even when she loses faith in reuniting with her daughter, she does not alter history beyond her human means.
Because Allison knows it isn’t safe for her to use her powers, not for the people she loves, not after what’s she done, and she can’t risk being the person she used to be.
And she builds a new life, develops a healthy, loving relationship and marriage, becomes a leading voice in her community, all on her own merit.
When she does end up needing to use her power in necessary self-defense — for her husband’s life, not her own — she’s able to rebuild Ray’s wavering trust in her, and she shares in his horror when her childhood-instilled cruelty bleeds back in. Even though the person she harmed deserves no pity, Allison was so deliberate about her imposed consequence, having the bartender recreate his previous assault on her onto himself, unable to scream — Allison couldn’t speak either, when she first warped into the 60’s — and she does it so easily, not concerned for witnesses or permanent injury until Ray intervenes.
When Ray questions if she has ever used her power on him, I don’t believe we hear a response from Allison, with the implication being that it’s the possibility that unnerves her — as the viewer we know that she has not, and that’s she proud of the life she’s built.
But just the concept of her powers naturally yields concerns about their potential, and that usage starts and ends with Allison. She knows that now. She doesn’t guilt or really fault Ray for considering the idea. The shame never leaves, and Ray would be justified in feeling unsafe, in leaving, whether because of her powers or knowing how she once used them.
S2 ends with Allison having to leave Ray in the past for the chance to see her daughter again.
She asks for his consent to erase his memories — and how cruel it is for him to have all this knowledge and spend his life working hard to improve society, making a better world he may never live to see or at best will have so little time in — and though it aches for her to leave him heartbroken and alone, she respects his decision to remember.
She could’ve stayed with Ray, with the guarantee of spending her life with a partner who loves her fiercely.
But doing right by her daughter is what Allison chose long before Ray, and she moves forward.
There’s no guarantee that returning to the 2010’s/2020’s will reunite Allison with her daughter Clair. And even if she does find her, there’s no certainty that she’ll be redeemed or forgiven in her daughter’s eyes.
Allison is scared, but she doesn't want to abandon Viktor; she wants to help him. Viktor blames Allison, because she's the only one he can vent his anger on. Their father died, but he used Allison to make Viktor suffer for the rest of his life. They're both victims of his abuse, but instead of blaming their father, they fight with each other.
omg s1e10 my fav part was allie and vik sharing a lil smile!!! the dysfunctional siblings love each other!!! + the fact that allie could've just blew vik's head off to stop him but instead broke his immersion with the gunshot
and ofc the brellies being babies again 🥺🥺🥺
i wanna go back in time and rewatch this episode for the First time cuz it was such a cliffhanger i was so hooked

Remember how Allison literally took the blame for Victor CUTTING HER THROAT like she TOOK THAT ON HER SHOULDERS (largely unfairly but that's a completely different post) and then people still wouldn't cut her a single fucking break for the rest of the show. Like everybody wants to make her out to be this unforgivable monster but like--
She got her THROAT CUT and still gave Victor grace and forgiveness, and BTW, Victor FORGAVE HER TOO. They ALL forgave her over and over again. I don't blame her AT ALL for being angrier in later seasons!! Look at what almost happened to her within MINUTES of landing in the 1960s. One of the most harrowing scenes in the entire show, deeply upsetting and scary. Of course she struggles to continue letting things go when Victor or someone else hurts her! She has to be the BLACK SIBLING in a family of adopted kids, she probably struggles to see her own life as truly "easier" than Victor's was.
I'm not gonna list all the crimes that the other's committed that were just as bad as anything Allison ever did. That's dumb at this point, this many years later. I'm just gonna point out that, if you REALLY think she's "worse", there's probably a reason why the writers MADE her worse.
