I think sometimes about how many people I’ve known to prove this point. Not always bad people, either; it’s so tempting to believe cruelty beats only in the breast of “bad people”. It’s a balm, a reassuring boogeyman in the dark, believing that. So many people I’ve known to think of kindness as their primary trait—as having no tolerance for vicious words—default to the ease of cruelty. When they’ve slept poorly. Had a bad day at work. Have spent weeks in the grips of their own demons. Always a reason. They could always explain it away. Because they’re good people, at heart. Because good people don’t just do that sort of thing.

Except they do. Every day. All the time. It’s so easy to be unkind. To scorn someone’s attempt to put themselves out there because their method of doing so grates on us.
